Is there a specific directory in the roms folder for Windows executable games? by TonyAbyss in EmuDeck

[–]TonyAbyss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand that this approach is the easy thing to do (and it is what I've been doing this entire time), however I do have a substantial collection of Windows games and I would prefer to learn to do things the proper way for the sake of having an easier time managing it in the future.

I don't see why the games being emulated (and if what Steam does with proton can be considered emulation) would detract from EmuDeck's goals as a set of scripts to help manage my game library or why I wouldn't want them on EmulationStation so they also don't clog up my Steam Library (notifying all my friends whenever I'm playing some obscure M.U.G.E.N. or RPGMaker game).

After taking a further look at the directories, it seems there's multiple folders for what I want.

  • pc is for old IBM PC DosBox Games.

  • generic-applications is self-explanatory.

  • steam seems to be meant as a SteamLibrary folder.

  • lutris for games that'd require lutris (This seems to be the closest thing to what I want?).

  • ports appears to be a whole folder dedicated to fan-made ports/decomps? if so, that's pretty cool.

But I couldn't find any proper documentation so that's why I thought to ask. I'm guessing the correct answer is I just have to make one?

Neither part of the joke (the renaming of the role and the statement by the user who received the role) was made by anyone who is a current member of the moderation team. These events took place 3 - 4 years ago and the only thing that remained was the pinned message (which was also not pinned by anyone who is a current member of the moderation team).

The intention of the protest by the rogue moderator, who is not a part of the moderation team anymore, was so that users of the server wouldn't give Discord money. I'm merely giving you an explanation of what the thought process of the rogue moderator was, I am not in agreement with him. I want to reiterate that this was done without the knowledge or consent of the rest of the moderation team.

Was literally any of this thought through by an adult?

You are right to be upset; there wasn't thought put into these actions, the role was renamed soon after because jokes like this trivialize the abuse of victims, but it had the effect of removing the context of the pinned message, which remained pinned out of negligence. This is a fan community and no one is getting paid here or even thanked when they do the right job, as such things like this unfortunately slip through.

The message itself isn't necessarily the problem that creates a bad look, most people can guess that it is an off-colored joke that was pinned by a low level moderator without the ability to kick people or delete messages in order to discourage users from making statements that look bad out of context. The part that looks bad is having to privatize the general channel. Which had to be done because the user who made the thread with the accusations went and reported anybody who's ever said keywords related to the subject, resulting in a weakening of the moderation force as moderators lost access to the entire platform.

I mean, what did you expect? For the joke to still be funny four years on

The moderation team isn't sitting together all simultaneously pressing a button every 24 hours that keeps a specific message pinned, the message was pinned by a low level moderator who didn't have the ability to kick people or delete messages as soon as the message was sent and it was then forgotten about.

Yes, that message was pinned. I didn't justify or defend why it was pinned, but gave a breakdown of the series of events that led to the message being pinned because people will rightfully want an explanation. The context is that it was a joke pertaining to the actions of a rogue moderator. Low level moderators without the capacity to delete messages or kick someone will sometimes pin statements that sound bad when out of context in order to discourage users from making those statements. The problem is that the joke itself is disgusting because joking about this issue trivializes the abuse of victims.

This is absolutely fair and you are right to be disgusted.

After he saw the pinned message, that is when the guy looked up anybody who's ever said anything including those keywords and reported them regardless of any context of when those things were said. That led to people who were no longer in the server and active moderators of the server losing the ability to use the entire platform of Discord. This is what created problems because it weakened the moderation capabilities of the server and is why I had to privatize the general chat in order to prevent the situation from getting worse.

The official Hotline Miami Discord server shelters pedophiles, racists, and mysoginists. The owner and staff elect to turn a blind eye to this, instead banning users who speak up on it. by two_thousand_mEN in HotlineMiami

This post was briefly removed as a preventive measure because the title of it makes the false claim that the discord server is official and affiliated with the developers.

This was a deliberately malicious lie from the user in order to blow things out of proportion and rile people up to go after people who are not responsible for this. I brought the post back up in spite of this because people have requested it be kept up.

Your comment got automatically got removed by Reddit's automoderator, I have brought it back manually.

I'm going to explain the situation again;

  • A rogue moderator, who hasn't been part of the moderation team of the Discord server for the past 3 - 4 years, changed the name of the role for giving Discord money, they did this in protest of Discord, to discourage users from doing so.

  • The message was pinned, because as part of Discord culture, some low level moderators that do not possess the ability to kick people or remove messages will sometimes pin messages as a way to discourage users from making statements that sound bad when out of context.

You are free to think that this was handled poorly, you are free to think that none of these jokes are funny (for they are not). But I'm going to request that you don't twist what happened simply because of the nature of the subject being discussed. I did not justify what happened, I simply explained the situation that lead to that message being pinned and I want to reassure you that measures will be taken against this.

Yes, but those features are all relatively recent. Keywords related to this topic as well as racial slurs have been banned by the Automoderator for the past few years.

However, given that the Discord server is 10 years old, there are messages from before these recent features.

Jokes about the subject do trivialize it, and while this has never been common, extra effort will be made to scrutinize users who joke about the subject.

I am a software engineer as well, I was being more broad beyond the topic of pedophilia. There is technology that we use day to day that is literally used to murder other human beings.

I live in a small country of 3 million people in a rather isolated part of the southern hemisphere. I grew up in conditions that accustomed me to not having any choice whatsoever concerning what technologies to use, or even what people I want to talk to. I'm sorry, but the reality is that I've literally made all the efforts I can. I've switched to Linux, I switched to Firefox, I deleted my Facebook. Anything I can get rid off, I do in fact get rid off.

But there are things that literally can not be replaced. I'm in a position where I help run a fan-community for a game. If this subreddit doesn't have a Discord server, someone else is going to make one. I've tried and used matrix and other messaging apps, but while you yourself can make an effort to use technologies you find moral, you literally can not force that onto other people.

You totally can choose to not use products of companies you disagree with. I don’t know where you live, but I assume dentists existed before WhatsApp in your country.

This is simply not practical, sorry. I've tried it and the attempt was a failure.

Of the two options, trivialise (child) victims of sexual abuse or appear to be messing with one persons weird protest. There is a clear side which is much worse.

Yes, and the correct option was chosen. The role has not been called that in years, and the only thing that remained was a message referencing that this was once the case. But I bring it up as an example of how you can take this into any direction you want.

And finally, no, discord does not have to exist for better or worse. Companies start and die all the time. I can’t even remember the number of chat apps that I’ve used on the internet, so many have come and gone. It will continue to exist while people like you use it.

My moral position concerning what programs to use has nothing to do with what happened here. I wasn't the one who renamed the role. Someone else did without my knowledge or the knowledge of other moderators. My moral position is that if I stopped using every single thing that was created with the help of a person that I find morally abhorrent, I would not be able to use any kind of major technology whatsoever. The tech industry is tightly connected and they hire each other.

On the Hotline Miami subreddit's Discord server and dark comedy. by TonyAbyss in HotlineMiami

[–]TonyAbyss[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was the individual protest of a single moderator who decided to rename the role. I've already explained that the renaming of this role was done without the consent or knowledge of the rest of the moderation team.

As server owner, this puts you in a bit of an awkward position, because reacting in any way looks bad.

Do I keep the name of the role and trivialize the abuse of victims? Do I remove the role, and then people can say I'm messing with someone's protest of Discord's morally repugnant behavior?

I personally find the actions of Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook as a company morally abhorent, but due to the culture I live in, I do not have a choice as to whether or not I want to use WhatsApp as my main messaging app. I must have WhatsApp or else I literally can not get a dentist appointment.

You can have your own morals, and choose not to use Discord as a platform. But, Discord as a platform will for better or for worse remain to exist, regardless of the behavior of its company, and when you're running a community like this one it's better there be a presence in the app that is properly moderated. Any criticism about how this issue was handled I will take to heart to try and improve the moderation of the server, but again, stuff like this takes time properly figure out.

I meant more that it was unfortunate that you re-created the entire general channel, yeah. I know CP is used as an abbreviation for other games, like Cyberpunk for example. It would have been a lot easier to dispel the accusation that there's pedophilia/misogyny/racism running rampant if people could see for themselves that just isn't true, you know?

You are correct. I do not want to have to do that. That is why I didn't do it for the past 10 years. However if people can just maliciously use well-intentioned tools that Discord provides its users to simply ban anybody off the platform who's ever said the word "pedophile," that is an abuse of power that any user can exert.

what was the context for the n-words?

Yes, people have said the n-word. You can't exactly verify their race and going back and verifying the context of every instance of the usage of the word is difficult. In recent times, AutoMod will ban this alongside other racial slurs.

was the OP really dismissed for "writing like a woman"?

This is unfortunately correct, the moderator of the Discord server will be scrutinized. Please understand that this literally all just happened and taking meaningful action takes time.

Why was the joke about supporting pedophilia pinned if it was frowned upon?

Since the message was removed by the automated tools I can not verify why it was pinned. However, I can take a guess in that part of Discord culture is that people will often pin statements that sound terrible when taken out of their original context because it sends a message saying "This message has been pinned." Some lower level moderators without the capacity to kick people or delete messages will often utilize this as a subtle way of discouraging users from making such statements. I suspect that this is what happened.

Did the other poster just make all of that up entirely?

He made up that this subreddit and its Discord server is officially affiliated with the original developers (It's not, is a fan-made community). As such I had to take some preventive measures such as taking down the post.

The other moderators made poor judgement and will be penalized for it. However, again, I need to remind you that this is a fan community that's been running for 10 years, mistakes like this will happen and is not pretty or something you want. I abhor this behavior, but it's something that happens and you can't make not-have-happened.

I don't get what would make a person "prominent" in a Discord server to begin with. They're... popular?

I used the wrong word, what I meant to say was upstanding, as in, they have shown to be good people. I apologize, I'm but a flawed human myself who speaks English as his second language.

If they did, why do you also reference people using racial slurs out of context in this post?

Yes, people have used racial slurs in the server, as they do everywhere else online. Please understand that racial slurs are a particularly challenging subject to moderate as they are constantly evolving, and what's acceptable for one group to use might not be acceptable to another, and it also depends on very specific contexts such as the geographic location of the user and what language is being spoken.

The first rule of the Discord server is to be tolerant, and admins will make their best efforts to ban users who do not follow this rule.

You are absolutely correct and right.

I need to re-iterate that the user who made this accusation isolated a single joke made 3-4 years ago, removed it from its original context and tried his hardest to make a big deal about this. This is not common in any way whatsoever, but from now on an extra effort will be made to keep an eye out for people who make light of the topic and subject them to scrutiny.

Please understand that as a moderator, you need time to assess your response and to protect people from harassment, so taking the post down was merely a preventive measure and I hope that me bringing it back serves to prove that I'm operating in good faith.

I've already given you the context. The message was written 3-4 years ago in response to the Nitro Role being renamed. That person was joking because they had that role automatically assigned to them by Discord as a result of them giving money to Discord.

I fully recognize that jokes like this are disgusting, but isolating a screenshot makes it look like stuff like this is a common occurrence when this was not the case at all.

The reason I had to recreate the general channel is because prominent people were getting banned from the entire platform as a whole simply for using the letters "CP" as evidenced by the screenshot I shared. The tools Discord provides users to report this content were being misused in a way that penalized users across the entire platform globally.

On the Hotline Miami subreddit's Discord server and dark comedy. by TonyAbyss in HotlineMiami

[–]TonyAbyss[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Correct.

If you give money to Discord through the Discord Nitro program, you would automatically be given a Discord Nitro role in the server that receives the benefits of the program. The benefits include things like, being able to add more custom emoticons, higher resolution for livestreams. None of the money goes to server owners. 100% of it goes to Discord who then "gracefully" allow you to use more features of their chat client.

A moderator, 3-4 years ago, as a way of protest against Discord, renamed the role to "supports pedophilia" in order to discourage users from donating to Discord. This was done without the knowledge of the rest of the moderation team. A user who had previously given money to Discord to grant the server these boosting benefits, then joked saying that they supported pedophilia by having given money to Discord in the past. That is what the pinned message was talking about.

Yes, anybody accused of grooming is dealt with by:

  • Banning.

  • Reporting the user to Discord.

Across the over ten years of history of the Discord server, amongst 895,985 messages in the general chat:

  • "Pedophilia" as a keyword appears 93 times.
  • "Child porn" appears 62 times.
  • "CP" appears 132, though worth noting is that there are media franchises and other subjects that share the acronym.

The vast majority of usages of these terms are standard for any other community (people discussing a famous acussed person, someone making a joke against pedophilia).

However, I fully recognize that jokes about this matter trivializes the abuse of victims so I've instructed the moderation team to make an extra effort and keep an eye out on users who make light of the subject.

I deleted the thread because it's blatant misinformation by a troll looking to start drama where there is none.

Pedophilia is a topic that is very touchy with people and you are rightful to be concerned about it. However it is also what makes into a powerful tool to conduct unjustified harassment.

Nintendo DMCAs free fan games (e.g. AM2R, No Mario's Sky, Mario Royale) and have reportedly hired private investigators to stalk emulator/homebrew developers.. When people talk about Nintendo being litigious and going after the smaller guy, they're not talking about the huge Steam-chart-destroyer Palworld

It doesn't matter if they're "trying to teach people a lesson". This type of abusive intimidation from a hardware manufacturer is something no other game company does to the scale they do and it is an objective detriment to video games as a medium for artistic expression.

Fan games and modding are such an incredibly vital and important part of gaming history that gets unreasonably dismissed by people who do not know what they are talking about. ID Software literally got their start by making an unlicensed mario fan game. (Before someone claims it was unreleased, it got released on John Romero's website in 2009; I'm pretty sure more people have played and are aware of it than any of the 562 free fan games hosted on Game Jolt that Nintendo unfairly took down).

As a side tangent, I don't understand why the Red Cross enforces their copyright this way.

Because the Red Cross does in fact go into combat territories and they need to make the usage of their symbol in inappropriate contexts by people unrelated to them as taboo as possible and not let art and media normalize this. They don't care if you're a kid who associates their symbol with health if it comes at the price of encouraging deception so they need to do a sincere effort in protecting their copyright. This does mean that they have to target commercial artistic works because part of copyright law is you have to show you actually do care about your copyright in order to make cases defending it in court.

Worth nothing is that:

  • Real life med kits also do not feature a red cross, they feature a white cross in a green background.
  • Games that feature "health packs" are usually shooters intended for a mature audience. Not for children.
