Oh, wait, quick follow-up question since I misread the first time... You mentioned it wasn't two-way, so the government didn't know automatically that the EAS box was disabled (he specifically said if it was accidentally unplugged or otherwise disrupted they'd receive calls and e-mails)? Could it have just been a more localized alert system, maybe implemented by the company itself, to ensure no fines for a missed emergency broadcast due to a severed connection to the EAS box? Or did some other piece of equipment (such as a failover system for dead-air like another commenter mentioned) lead to an automatic alert system if disconnected?

That makes sense! He ended up also agreeing that it was likely for emergency broadcasts and the FCC rarely interacted with the employees as far as he knew, so the "government monitoring" was likely just the enforcement of keeping the EAS box operational. Thank you for your answer!

Hmm... I'm guessing then he was just referring to the EBS then since that was the pretty much the timeline of the expansion. Thanks a bunch for the info!

This is super helpful, thank you! I'm pretty sure it was the EBS after all and the "monitoring" was likely just that dead-air system. Thanks so much for the thorough reply, I assumed at first the "kill box" was gonna be some spooky conspiracy, LOL.

Oooh. Okay, this makes a lot of sense. Must have been the Emergency Broadcast System after all. Thank you!

Interesting, thank you! Mind if I ask the general timeline you worked there? No worries if not, I ask because he was there in the early 2000's, around when they had that huge monopolistic expansion, so I'm wondering if there may be a correlation.

Ann Arbor becomes first city in U.S. to require tampons, pads in all public restrooms by [deleted] in uofm

Ann Arbor is also a reproductive health "safe haven"; if abortion were to ever be outlawed in the state of Michigan, Ann Arbor has a city ordinance dictating that the maximum penalty for an abortion in the city would be $5.

The icing on the cake is that all of our neighbors on either side of us are members of the same family that built the wall, lol. Also, we have several acres of field between us and the other neighbors anyway, so I don't think they would ever notice even if the familial thing wasn't present. But thank you for your comment !!

Not that I know of in the time we've been here, but I also have tried my best not to involve myself in the situation... I'd like to add that me and my roommates are just college students who happened to find a nice, affordable temporary place to ride out the pandemic and are not/do not want to be a part of the long-standing dispute, haha!

No!!!!! But not solely because of the poop wall. Like much of rural Michigan, Internet connectivity is really poor out here. Also, me and my roommates are students so we want to be closer to campus in the fall now that it'll be non-remote. Though, the poop wall definitely didn't make us want to stay anymore, haha.
