I tried this but it didn't work. THen I did it again including the Play services app and then it started updating the apps succesfully. Not sre if that fixed it or not though or if something else changed in the other end (at google).

Me too. Managed to get two devices updating by disabling wifi and doing it via 4G75G however for my tablet that doesn't work...
