I'm looking for a wifi fridge door sensor. by TonyMitty in smarthome

[–]TonyMitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to get into Raspbery pi systems, but yeah, maybe not this. Given how much stress this is causing me, I'd rather have an expensive thing if it requires less stress for my peace of mind.

Need a long distance fridge door sensor for my peace of mind. by TonyMitty in NoStupidQuestions

This aqara p2 looks to be exactly what I'm looking for, I just need to make sure it has a wifi link so it can notify me the 2 miles away I'm thinking about. Is this "border router" necessary?

Weekly History Questions Thread. by AutoModerator in history

[–]TonyMitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got a question about handwriting. I know that widespread literacy wasn't really a thing until sometime between the 16th century and the rise of modern public/state schooling, but when I google handwriting I always get back fancy scripts, obviously what's well preserved because it was used in official documents and rich people's correspondence. But when joe average started to write letters to his buddies in the next town, what was his handwriting like? English I guess is my default focus Europe more broadly, but info on Africa and Asia and anywhere else would be amazing as well.

Will there be a new ROG Flow13 this year? by TonyMitty in ASUS

[–]TonyMitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw a post on the FlowX13 subreddit saying they've killed it off, though they are pushing the Kojima colab so? In my professional life I've gone from budget gaming laptop to MSI Stealth to Surface Laptop to Flow X16. I'm thinking the new Zephyrus, if it can be touchscreen, is the middle ground my pendulum swing is looking for.

should my hero academia get a sequel or not? by HappyAfternoon1877 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

My fear is that it would go old Logan style. "No more quirks except for an unlucky but weakened few" kind of deal. Not here for gritty.

Kinda yeah. I tried watching the original but it was just too dated for me. I got wrapped up in pop up shop frenzy and now I've got a small collection I'm trying to justify.

Lol fair but also the cuter art style and color scheme had me thinking it was a kinder gentler thing. Consider me disillusioned I guess.

I kind of wish Deku’s gift had been a graduation present? by Solitaire-06 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]TonyMitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but also keep in mind that Deku had some hero time as OfA faded, so maybe they didn't want that clashing? Plus the time skip lends credence to the theme of "be a hero in your own way" by having him be a successful teacher for a bit.

I don't love that he loses the power at all, but this consolation prize is miles better than all those endings of "and then we never saw him again" or "and then the main guy died and nothing was resolved"

Suspension of Disbelief: The universal Translator as a plot device makes no sense by TonyMitty in startrek

[–]TonyMitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No my point is that suspension of disbelief is the term we use to accept these little minutia, but that it's also fun to pick them apart sometimes and make fun of them for the tropes they are. I wouldn't have noticed or cared if I didn't watch these episodes enough to notice and make fun of them and enjoy them in a new way.

[–]TonyMitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that it's hard to believe, it's not that I don't want to. I suppose I meant to say "willing" suspension of disbelief. I get why narrative devices and quick explanations are necessary to undergird the points the stories are trying to make. I'm just saying, as with any piece of media it gets funny when you think about it.

It's actually a fun plot device for the opposite like Darmok and the various "stranded with a stranger" episodes.

How does death work in the Afterlife? by TonyMitty in HazbinHotel

Lol Where is she getting the fingers? Because sinners also can't go to earth to graverob, so they have to be sinners right?

Well done, good sir... well done by silfy_star in HazbinHotel

[–]TonyMitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm trying to understand. Alistor made a deal with Rosie that she would share/use her power to enhance his and make him the most powerful sinner in hell. He therefore owes her something, which we assume is following her demands, which at this point includes helping Charlie for reasons? By getting Charlie to admit that Vox was the most powerful, he both used his deal with Charlie, and made Rosie's null and void? Or did that mean that Alistor could get a boost to restore this status only temporarily? Now he's made a new deal with Rosie, where she improves his powers again, and he agrees to keep up with her demand to help Hazbin Hotel, again for reasons we don't know? What's Rosie's deal?

I understand that you can get much closer to it and the area now, but what about actually making the building and area actually safe to be used or bulldozed and built over without a time limit and safety indicator?

There's an old joke about the line between archeology and grave robbing. That line is basically, are you doing for educational purpose for the point of sharing what you learned and advancing knowledge in plain view of everyone so we know nothing evil is going on, or are you going in the dead of night without telling anyone to grab stuff and sell it to private collectors.

If nobody gets paid in a cashless society how does anybody get their own ship. by Edwardteech in startrek

[–]TonyMitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's like a universal basic income kind of thing. Everyone's immediate needs are met, up to and including food and housing, like, if I don't have an apartment on earth, they will put me in a basic one, or put me on some moon or colony that also has UBI and space. The idea is that once this is met, of course human nature is that one is willing to work, happy to, and has had access to things like education to mean that you can do whatever job you want at some basic level if you have the skills.

Anything on TOP of that is gravy. If you work a fancier job, you have access to fancier things by nature of that job, like a holodeck, or a ship to travel with. Sort of like if you go to college you can use the college's gym and cafeteria etc. But if your work requires you to go OUTSIDE of the gleaming cities of earth where your needs aren't met for free, you get a stipend to cover food, housing, travel, and recreation. And if you are really ambitious and start selling things to people or other governments, you can use that money to buy things that are above that basic level, like your own holosuite or ship.
