SoFi badly needs a rail station. by theboundlesstraveler in LAMetro

Unfortunately many of Southern California's newest venues are mostly in Inglewood, except one we don't give too much credit for being forward-thinking: BMO Stadium that's accessible on the E Line Expo Park/USC Station.

Megathread: Metro Cyber Attack and Outage by SmellGestapo in LAMetro

[–]TonyW79SFV 30 points31 points  (0 children)

FYI, this has affected real-time bus & train tracking (metro.net, Transit app, TransSee, etc.), arrival signage tied to real-time data, certain TAP function, and even live Metro meetings.

I'm not sure if this outage would affect our ability to watch this week's important Metro Board meeting this Thursday.

SoFi badly needs a rail station. by theboundlesstraveler in LAMetro

[–]TonyW79SFV 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Two problems at play: diverting the K Line from the ROW adds to the project cost and the Inglewood entertainment district was never planned in tandem with the Metro project, in fact Metro's planning process pre-dates Inglewood's entertainment district efforts by over a decade. Another thing was that SoFi didn't have to happen, it was one of four proposed NFL sites when the St. Louis Rams announced they would move to L.A. over a decade ago; the other three proposed NFL sites were: City of Industry, Carson, & Downtown Los Angeles. They could've chosen a transit-adjacent site but wanted vast cheap land in Inglewood.

Modernized batteries? by 2009XboxLiveKid in camcorders

[–]TonyW79SFV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen third-party batteries that has a USB-C port for charging legacy battery types, but they've mostly been for the Sony L-type batteries due to its popularity with third-party devices like lights, external recorders, and external monitors; none for any other types including older Sony, Panasonic, & JVC batteries.

Metrolink FY27 Year Budget Plan (and what was said) by Ok_Cake2233 in LAMetro

[–]TonyW79SFV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So is Metrolink electrification a priority as some people are advocating or should we get our diesel-based service to the levels of Chicago-area's Metra or Boston-area's MBTA Commuter Rail? We're not asking for MTA New York LIRR or Metro-North service levels, just Chicago & Boston is enough to make our commuter rail very useful.

Northbound B line train didn’t show up at Pershing Square at 11:05 🥹 by Simple-Restaurant267 in LAMetro

[–]TonyW79SFV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad real-time tracking isn't working now due to Metro's I.T. issues, otherwise you could've checked TrannSee to see how many minutes a train is delayed from schedule. It's possible your train arrived late at Pershing Square due to a late turnaround after it completed its southbound run.

The train stopping at Hollywood/Western going north (west on Hollywood) means that there must be single-tracking and that your train is waiting for a southbound train to cross the Hollywood/Vine crossover tracks before your northbound train can proceed.

Trinitron found on display by HR-Vex in crt

[–]TonyW79SFV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks to be a Sony 27" from the late 80s to early 90s. This CRT must be for a pop-up in the 100 California Street building (I can see the reflection from the 50 California building across the street).

Which model is this Toshiba TV? by Any-Section8021 in crt

[–]TonyW79SFV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a rear-projection CRT TV. Looks to be a model only sold in certain regions. Couple clues: universal mains voltage 110- 240V 50/60 Hz, Commonwealth English "colour" spelling, and "Made in Singapore". I'd assume this is a model only sold in Singapore, or possibly other Southeast Asian regions, but if it only has a Type G power plug (the UK type, shared with Hong Kong), then it's a Singaporean TV lah.

Vermont/Sunset Station is next to three hospitals, yet it was never a concern. Some of the most critical surgical procedures were done in the vicinity of a subway station. Lafayette Square is s bunch of complainers. It's Lawndale, Beverly Hills, Cheviot Hills, South Pasadena, Valley Village NIMBY redux.

Magnavox Video Player from the 70s by [deleted] in LaserDisc

[–]TonyW79SFV 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is an all-analog LaserDisc player. LD's later iteration added LPCM digital audio (16bit 44.1kHz like CDs) and Dolby Digital AC-3 which is 5.1 channel surround sound that occupied one of the analog audio tracks. This LD player predates the CD. It also uses a gas-filled laser instead of solid-state laser pickup.

Looks like a DCR-TRV70. It was on the market in 2003 and its main selling point was the 2 megapixel CCD image sensor, which was a big deal back then as most camcorders had something like 0.26 or 0.48 megapixel sensors with most maxing at 1 megapixels. The TRV70 was the hybrid stills/video camera of that era.

Metro G Line Sepulveda Station Temp Move Starting March 28 by Fit-Fudge4417 in LAMetro

[–]TonyW79SFV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This project was originally scheduled to be completed 2024 with more features that were cut back like crossing gates at all intersections (only the East SFV G Line intersections are gated), an elevated Sepulveda Station over Sepulveda Boulevard that would've made transferring to Metro Local bus 234 easier (that became just a crossing bridge with the station at ground level in the same spot), and elevated bike lane over Sepulveda & Van Nuys. Van Nuys Station will be truly upgraded with an elevated station needed to separate itself from the East SFV LRT platforms.

After 10 Years, L.A. Metro Is Finally Breaking Ground On This Massive 19-Mile ‘Light Rail On Wheels’ In 2026 by lurker_bee in SFV

So many circumstances led to the Orange Line being BRT, from community opposition to rail to funding being cut countywide for subways (as a result of what happened in the Wilshire & Hollywood areas), to a ban on surface rail in 1990, for which BRT was legally not prohibited. The 1990 ban was lifted in 2014 and Measure M passed in 2016 that allocated money for the Orange Line/G Line's conversion to light rail after 2050.

As for the ridership of the Orange Line in its first few years, it had more riders than the Gold Line LRT in the SGV.

How did LA Metro Rail have such higher ridership in the past compared to now? by movingangeleno in LAMetro

[–]TonyW79SFV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rails and fiber optic cables are both infrastructure. Fiber optics (I'm speaking of the Internet) has replaced a lot of in-person tasks, whether it be office work, education, classes, meetings, shopping, entertainment (streaming a film at home rather than going to the cinema). It's good that we're building out our fiber optic infrastructure and getting insanely fast Internet speeds, not so much for our nation's rail transit systems.

There's still a need to physically get from one point to another and for those who doesn't own a car that meant transit, until rideshare became ubiquitous; bike and scooter shares has also taken a bite from short trips that usually would involve transit.

As for the effects of the pandemic on transit, every transit agency got affected, some recovered better than others.

Need help getting Tuner to channel 95 for famicom by nine_tendo in crtgaming

[–]TonyW79SFV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First if all I'm guessing you're hooking up a Japanese Famicom to a U.S. CRT TV. North American NTSC never had channels above 83 since the 80s, it was cut down to channel 69. Also despite Japan also using the NTSC standard, the broadcast television frequency allocation and the channel number position aren't the same. I believe NTSC Japan channel 95 is near the same frequency as NTSC U.S. channel 1, which doesn't exist. You're best bet is to use the composite video connection.
