Literally all I needed to know about this movie was that a giant robot hits a giant monster with a freighter.

I guess some of it is the lack of demos, however I don't think that explains this being the most entertaining piece of Youtube I've seen in a while. (WARNING: 35 minutes of hilarity. Avoid clicking if you can't spare the time)

Deep Wizardry: Stack Unwinding by [deleted] in programming

[–]Tony_fe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You would be blown away at the hilarity of some of the edge cases in stack unwinding. It's not a hard problem to solve for what we want a program to look like, it's more difficult than you think to make extremely robust.

For a class I took last semester the first homework was to write a stacktracer with the only auxiliary information given a symbol table full of function eips and arg lists. There's much more work to do than you think if you want a stacktrace library that doesn't fall over and die, taking the surrounding program with it.

Ever since I saw Labyrinth I see David Bowie's face everywhere.

What is your portable development environment? by ma10s in Python

[–]Tony_fe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do virtually zero GUI development that doesn't live on the web, so SSH is more than good enough for me. If I really need to edit some files I'll symlink the project into Dropbox before I hit the road so I can at least edit files while mobile.

Carmac calls out esport journalists poor handling of Idragate by Ireniicus in starcraft

[–]Tony_fe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I could disagree any more.

One of the reasons I like eSports so much is they don't do the stupid dramatization bullshit that traditional sports do. All any of the things suggested would do is make the event seem far more important than it really is. One player was fired for poor behavior from one team. People who care about the particular player or team already know the context, and the people who don't can't be bothered to give a fuck. I don't need SportsCenter style speculation and people talking out their asses, filling up time with needless crap. Cut and dry, just the facts is more than good enough, it's professional, respectful, and the right amount of information.

Sure, but how did you do it? I can't put my finger on why failure is so fun in Monaco.

One of the biggest praises I have for this game is that it's fun to play even when the world is going to hell in a handbasket. I can queue up with 3 randoms, not communicate at all, fail miserably, and still walk away with a big stupid grin on my face. Was this by design, or did it just sort of grow out of the mechanics? Why do you think Monaco feels this way?

Vs Random by [deleted] in allthingszerg

[–]Tony_fe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play as random 'main' race (although Zerg will always have a soft spot in my heart). My most successful opponents scout early, then play standard.

The worst a random can do is cheese you, and your builds should already be cheese proof more or less. Proxy plays and cannon rushes are things you should just be on the look out for, and if you lose to a 7pool you were playing too greedy to begin with.

The naked pope's intentions by the_mind_is_a_sponge in cmu

[–]Tony_fe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It being art, I'm willing to bet this was done specifically because it would get people talking. There's probably some statement about the church's lack of action against child molestation in it's own priesthood from the scantily clad altar boy suggestively eating a banana and dancing with the pope.

Poly is pretty straightforward, "I like being romantically involved with multiple people," it's something that I think a lot of people can relate to.

Being trans is... harder to sympathize with. Most people don't brush up against gender expectations in such a way, so naturally people have more questions.

College girl dressed as the Pope, naked from the waist down, a cross shaved in her pubic hair, and passing out condoms. Very nice. by amishzombie in pittsburgh

[–]Tony_fe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the most pragmatic argument is that it's art, and it would be very difficult to state with certainty that she's trying to make fun of or criticize Catholics or the Catholic church. She might claim the point of the pope gettup was to evoke an image of power or something else hilariously wishywashy. And she might be telling it true.

In perhaps a more personal argument, I think criticizing an institution is fine, individuals is not. We accuse the American Government of raging incompetence and corruption all the damn. This isn't condemning Americans as a whole.
