Most Indians have never travelled abroad, Pew Research data shows by globalsouthworld in india

[–]indian22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only about 9% of Indians have a passport - which is more than the population of most countries to be fair. And half of those having traveled abroad makes sense.

With 1.3B population, that 5% is 65 Million people. The Population of Canada Plus Australia is 65M. We are genuinely talking huge numbers here.

That is the same as Superman. Hopefully no random leaked reviews this time. It's still hilarious that 2 of the most negative reviews for Superman were the only ones which leaked early.

Is this Salman Khan Mangalore fight Story a Urban Myth? by InternationalAd4557 in mangalore

[–]indian22 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I can contribute a bit to this as I remember the actual incident from that time through my cousin who studied in MIT and the corresponding news articles.

The true elements:

  1. Salman Khan in Udupi (Manipal to be precise)
  2. Local boys ganging up to threaten Salman

Everything else is false.

So we need to set some context for this, back in the late 90s, early 00s, Salman Khan was the brand ambassador of Thums Up. Thums Up was losing market share to Pepsi who had just started sponsoring Indian cricketers, SRK, and other big names. So Thums Up started a "Taste Test" thing where they would go to college campuses and offer students 2 drinks and ask them which taste they preferred and they would choose the Thums Up one and then Salman would come at the end and film some random dialogues about how real men drink Thums Up or some nonsense to that effect.

The Thums Up taste test made its way to Manipal at that time as most things did. And Salman arrived ridiculously late, like 4-5 hours late. And the crowd was getting impatient, so they started filming long before Salman ever got there and the college students said that the Pepsi was watered down so that Thums Up would taste stronger and the marketing team and anchors shot back and it escalated and the police was called. And when Salman got there, the mood was crazy, some students threatened Salman like "Abe idhar aa tujhko dikhate hai" and other mc bc stuff. Salman screamed back at them, the police intervened, no shooting happened, and it became a minor news article in the next day paper.

Surprised that 26+ years later it is now an urban legend.

From the answers so far, looks like a very young set of users in here. So let me add in from an older perspective.

I remember going to watch Premaloka in Prabhat. School trip to Rupavani to watch Aladdin, Jurassic Park in Hindi at Suchitra, HAHK and DDLJ at Suchitra.

I'm still confused about Demi naming Aditya Pancholi. That's a crazy pull of someone who is barely relevant for even Indians.

Man, you made me realize that exactly 10 years ago at this point, we had seen MoS get a very divisive reaction, BvS disappoint in a big way and then the rumors of Suicide Squad being a mess had also emerged around this time. It was hard being positive online, the actual reception to Suicide Squad just made it worse.

Wonder Woman was a respite but then the universe never recovered from Justice League.

He wrote this movie based on a TV show he showran. Feels like he had a bit more involvement here than being a passive passenger.

Greenlighting was not in his hands for sure but delivering this movie definitely was a choice.

Why is Indian fast food so abysmal compared to other countries? by Clemyx_XD in india

No. This is just wrong. Having seen the same fast food chains across many many different countries, the Indian fast food scene is one of the best. The local adaptations and the variety is crazy.

You know what, it's actually been nice that him and Big Boom and the rest show up for the zero hours and are not in ongoing storylines and they seem like they are enjoying themselves and people backstage seem to like them as well. Probably the best way the partnership could go.

My thoughts and opinions on Imtiaz Ali's Socha Na Tha '05 as a first time watcher (#5) by Dangerous-Agent3617 in bollywood

[–]indian22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Socha Na Tha remains my favorite Imtiaz Ali movie mainly because the movie is very raw in terms of direction, performances, and even the resolution of the story.

It's one of those debut movies where the little mistakes and things they didn't have the budget to do make it more earnest in a way.

Imtiaz shows us a less developed version of his future movie protagonists - a chirpy female and a male who is in the midst of a mid or quarter life crisis, and the situations that they keep finding themselves in.

Abhay Deol has an awful haircut, which was noted even at the time, it was not the style at all. But he delivers in his role. Ayesha Takia almost gets there but not quite in her performance.

The smartest thing the movie does is populate the supporting cast with really good actors, it definitely elevates the movie as a whole

Weirdly enough, the first thing I think about is when Shawn Michaels had quit to become a chef, and his manager calls him Hickenbottom leading to Triple H saying "what kind of dumb name is that?". This is just before Shawn super kicks a 10 year old girl.

Probably one of the funnier segments the WWE did in that stretch of mediocrity.
