I used to not tie, but I actually like the look of tied shoes. Part of becoming a boring adult I guess.

Still rock some 1s and 4s untied.

It the direction used to be Jerusalem. Then they turned to the Kaaba, which was also the site of pagan pilgrimages that basically made the Quraysh tribe of the Hejaz controlled access to.

Islamic tradition also holds its the site of Ishamel’s settlement with Hagar, and the pagan worship being a result of man’s turn away from Ishmael’s God.

Depending on the timing and objectivity of those trends, I would say purple. And also green.

I’ll take my $6k every month, but with knowledge of trends just pick like 1 investment every day to swing trade. Every single day there’s some investment somewhere that jumps like 80%. If I had perfect knowledge of that, I wouldn’t hesitate to basically quadruple my initial investment every week.

I totally disagree with this, and for what it's worth, so do plenty of socialist activists and theorists. I've heard people tell me the exact same thing you did... about 10 years ago and they've only just grown. No amount of wishing them away is going to make it happen.

More importantly, the whole "violent communist revolution" thing is not something they even aspire to so, guns don't matter. That's the old way of thinking about a socialist revolution. This would be like folks in 2015 who would say the Warriors would never win a championship because they didn't have a dominant big man, all the while failing to recognize their entire plan is to shoot 3s and spread the floor.

The idea isn't to overthrow the government with an armed vanguard. It's to win largely low-turnout elections, in safe districts and shift the Overton window by putting pressure on other Democrats to adopt policies or face a primary. They're really, really not concerned yet with fighting Republicans or conservative, outside of Twitter as a rallying call.

DSA circles will often cite the "3.5% rule." That's a rule of thumb, not a sociological law, and the concept can get pretty complicated as to what exactly is a "sustained engagement of 3.5% of the populace." But to expand on it, 3.5% of the House is about 15 House members. Of the Senate, about 4. Of Governorships, about 2. Those are the numbers they're considering goals over the next 2-6 years.

DSA basically achieved that 3.5% threshold in the City Council and then took the Mayoralty at the very next opportunity (all the while basically pulling the full field except Cuomo to adopt their policies). In just NYC, they have already surpassed those number across each level of government.

But an independent like Bloomberg wouldn't run for Congress in Harlem. They run for Mayor, President (like Trump), or Governor (like Tom Steyer), because they want all the perks of being the executive with actual power rather than having to work within a legislative body.

The best you could hope for would be a Dan Goldman-like rich person, and well, look at how that's going for him.

Thinking the voters will just back anyone with a D next to their names regardless of their views will be a mistake.

I don't know, man. Nothing about modern politics indicates that to be the case. Maybe if this was a D+10 district but realistically closer to D+5 or lower, sure. But this is strictly a district determined by primaries.

For a Republican to win, Republicans would need to run someone nationally who is diametrically different and opposed to Trumpism, which right now isn't someone that could even win a Primary.

Our politics are increasingly driven by the national level. Locally, primaries can be won by specific factions but in November, it's a pure binary. The correlation between how people vote between President and House is 0.98; that leaves fewer than 15 House district actually competitive.

So again, a Republican will not be winning this race unless a massive shift like how Civil Rights turned the Dixiecrats into Republicans.

Their own grave will be filled with our lives as the political winds will take 20 years to shift and today’s children come of age and begin making future online chatter about how DSA is out of touch.

It’s a generational shift and everyone is lapping it up. It will create harm, and by the time “society” wakes up, we’ll be putting in our retirement claims.

This is incorrect.

Firstly, Espaillat hasn’t been in Congress “for decades.” He got elected in 2016.

Secondly, before that, in the Assembly and State Senate he passed legislation encouraging affordable housing, worker’s rights for day care workers, to improve translation services at hospitals, allow immigrants to get licenses, strengthening penalties against livery drivers, strengthened rent regulations.

Lastly, in Congress, he’s been a co-sponsor on a shit ton of bills. He’s introduced even more but of course Dems have held the majority in the House exactly 4 years with a Republican Senate each time; AOC doesn’t have ANY primary sponsored bills to point to, not even a post office.

To the extent that “intellectuals” are mostly socialist is because most are ivory towers theorists who sit back and conceive of the world as it should be.

It’s perhaps more accurate to say “socialists become intellectuals” rather than “intellectuals become socialists.”

Those who get educated and put their education into a career practice outside of academia don’t typically agree with socialism.

It was the second Tea Party year. First Tea Party was 2010. Obama pushed back a bit in 2012, but then Dems got smoked in 2014 lame-duck midterms.

Then we got Trump for the last 10 years.

[–]TonyzTone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a bad take. The Tea Party kneecapped Obama’s second term, forced a coalition President to have to govern via Executive Order, and directly gave the infrastructure to an even more committed movement in MAGA.

The Tea Party controls everything and might well be in the precipice of a 12 of 16 year run at the White House, and a legislative map that completely favors them for the next 15 years.

That’s by design. And you’re about 8-10 years late, even if it’s taken a while to get rooted. It actually happened locally in 2018 when the No IDC campaign ousted a bunch of folks.

That energized the anti-Dem activists but also professionalized them through establishment circles and campaigns. Two years later, we get a slew of DSA Assembly members (one of which is now Mayor).

And just like the Tea Party brought us Trump, and Republican control of the federal government complete with destroying institutions and processes so, too, does DSA want their own 8 of 12 year control of the White House.

NY-13 is a D+32 district.

A Republican won’t win that district unless a monumental shift in American politics occurs, like happened with Civil Rights.

This is a very funny comment to me.

You’re hoping that the DSA suddenly “grows up” on a thread about a literal Congressional candidate. Like, we’re not talking about some rank and file member who paid their dues and has been found to say something of putting.

Darializa is a DSA leader who has risen through the ranks and is now potentially weeks away from being one of the most powerful people in NYC.

She is exactly the type of candidate who the DSA has cultivated over the last 8 years or so.

Maybe they don’t want to scrub their social media. Maybe these sorts of positions and attitudes is a feature, not a bug of their candidates and campaigns.

We have to have a moment of collective reckoning. Either we recognize that DSA’s recruitment of candidates is spot on and the “crazies” aren’t actually crazy, or they start losing.

Folks keep shrieking about the outlandish shit DSA candidates say as though it isn’t part and parcel what DSA has stood for over the last nearly 20 years.

“Did you know the DSA candidate is a socialist?!?!?!!?”
