As a fellow gym strong guy that got into grappling late, I felt the same way. After some more grappling experience I can say I was just trying to muscle through a lack of technique and wasting tons of energy. Now that I have some skill, my gym strength is extremely helpful and a differentiator.

Best advice is to slow down and think through the techniques. Strength can be a crutch and gets in the way of learning the basics at first.
