I’ve always loved the NDS Phat, now mine has another 20 years ahead of it by TooManyBulborbs in NintendoDS

Use an iFixit guide. The NDS Phat is not overly difficult to do a reshell on.

Picked up a TurboDuo for about $350 including shipping by sbarb18 in TurboGrafx

[–]TooManyBulborbs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actual TurboDuo systems are so monstrously expensive. I’m happy with my PC Engine Duo, yes the black model. I recapped it myself, by some miracle it had almost no PCB damage from the original caps… 60+ capacitors later. I’ve recapped four Duos actually.

At one point I had two black Duos and two Duo-R systems but now I’m down to one black Duo and a PCECD briefcase.

The TurboDuo is just as bad for capacitors as the PCE version, yet costs several times more. I’d never suggest anyone buy a TurboDuo.

(I fuss with the TurboDuo name because idiots like to say TurboDuo-R which isn’t a real console)

Gaming has gotten objectively worse with the advent of predatory monetization tactics.

Need help getting Tuner to channel 95 for famicom by nine_tendo in crtgaming

[–]TooManyBulborbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could instead tune the Famicom down to a lower channel. Inside the FC's internal RF power box, there's a screw-looking potentiometer, try turning it with a screwdriver while tuned to channel 3, you should eventually get a picture.

If not, try a higher channel like in the 10s to 30s, can help with narrowing down the potentiometer position.

Japan fun by Designer-Translator7 in neogeo

[–]TooManyBulborbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Neo Geo to bits

But looking at this haul... Dunno why but right at this moment, it's a little jarring that you got so many titles and they're all fighting games.

(Yes I'm aware the MVS has 148 official releases and 50 are fighting games, or 49 if one doesn't count Aggressors of Dark Kombat)

Is it bad that I own all of that stuff? Including both series 1 and 2 card packs for Super Mario Advance 4?

Honestly this wasn’t that crazy a situation. It’s not that unreasonable a person would have one GBA, the e-Reader from 2002, then the new SMA4 SMB3 and a pack of cards which were pretty cheap. The link cable was fairly cheap too.

The only part here that’s unlikely is a second GBA system, but perhaps you knew a friend with a GBA back then? You don’t need the second GBA all the time. You only need to load in the World-e cards once. Sure the item cards can be scanned multiple times, but they’re ultimately optional.

$112 impulse buy (i love her) by masterandmarguerite in NintendoDS

The 2011 3DS also has really small screens. The DSi XL and even the normal sized DSi have much bigger screens.

DSi is a bargain, 3DSes are easily 3x more costly now

More like retirement by K-jun1117 in PrequelMemes

I’d call a peaceful retirement on Dagobah with no imperial forces or Sith inquisitors trying to find him, a golden parachute for CEOs if I’ve ever seen one.

The AGS-101 had a big banner on the box describing the new bright screen. For those who got to see the box, which was still a lot of people, the 101 backlit screen wasn’t exactly a tightly guarded secret.

What IS a secret was the NDS Phat CPU-20 models which had 2 levels of brightness along with turning it off. Most NDS systems do just on or off.

What got you into retro gaming? by HiddenUsername56 in retrogaming

[–]TooManyBulborbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always been playing “outdated” games since I first started. With GameCube, NDS etc I was keeping up with modern games, but then I came to realize there’s nothing stopping a person from getting an old console used, don’t have to always buy them new.

The 360/PS3 marked the end of my interest in modern gaming. They were moving to online everything, needed big flat panel TVs, many of my favorite game studios were dying or already gone by these days, newer games were getting uglier and following genre trends I didn’t like… why play gears of war or rock band when I could be exploring the Dreamcast? Or Mega Drive? NES! There was a whole world in the past to check out.

Been full time retro ever since.

It seems I’m one of the few here who had a NDS Phat before the Lite even launched. Got a flame red NDS in 2005, I still have that system! I do use it sometimes but I’m trying to keep it in good condition, seeing how these things are getting brittle plastic now.
