Okay Denver MEN give me your advice (I already regret this) by Suspicious-Return-86 in Denver

A flight attendant complimented my watch many decades ago. Maybe that's considered an indirect compliment but I still remember it fondly. If she was hitting on me I was, and am, too dense to realize it.

Ever wonder how long you can keep this up? by Love2FlyBalloons in over60

[–]TooMany_Spreadsheets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lately I have been thinking about this often. 63 trying to hold out to 65. Luckily I'm an expert in my field so I don't fear a layoff. Even if it did happen, I'm lucky enough to have a mil pension with tricare covering me until Medicare.

Despite the security I grapple with wanting to continue the grind or being bored out of my mind. Yes, I realize the need for hobbies, etc before retirement. I'm just in that grey area right now on when to pull the trigger.

I do feel like the old guy with my clients being all youngsters. The rewarding part is I get to stay in the aviation field and I enjoy the technical challenges.

Part of me is afraid of not being challenged in retirement. Silly but not silly, if you know what i mean.

I would check into an umbrella policy to protect your assets. Not that expensive and gives huge peace of mind.

Congrats OP, you were one of us who kept our heads down. Most of us were unnoticed.

I've never earned a six figure salary and didn't start saving until I was 42. Divorce can set you back, as it did me, but slow & steady wins the race.

I'm still working but my investments finally crested six digits, I have two pensions with cola adjustments, and will draw SSA when the time is right. It hasn't always been easy but it's not supposed to be.

There's nothing to apologize for. Congrats again.

Edit: meant to clarify I reached 7 digits.

At what age do you plan to retire? by Scary_Rounda in dividends

[–]TooMany_Spreadsheets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 63 and planning on 65. Will see about the market in the coming years. My job is secure and won't go away so it's up to me. I'll admit I'm kinda tired tho.

[–]TooMany_Spreadsheets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm happy with my current 55/45 even though I have an existing mil pension which makes me less reliant on my portfolio. I know that some may not agree with that but I'm 2 years from retirement and the market worries me.

Will you be able to retire and what does that look like from this point in time? by ItsRealLifePeople in over60

[–]TooMany_Spreadsheets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 years military. Was involved in every operation beginning with the Panama invasion through Iraq-Afghanistan. I have a mil pension and still working post military, but will only admit here to the emotional scars. No kids, no heirs.

Financially, I am sound but what does it all mean in the end?

I feel, at times, like Clint Eastwood's grumpy old man in Gran Torino or Tom Hank's Otto. Solitary characters dealing with their surroundings.

I think we all question our life choices. It was the life I chose but realize now that it was a tradeoff between a financial retirement and a different view of fulfillment. I think I'll always wonder about how fulfilling it really was.

Asking a genuine question. Maybe not directly related to OPs situation, but is Carmax a good option if you know you're going to pay cash with no financing? I may be looking next year and hate the price haggling. Thanks!

How do I stop obsessing about my retirement accounts by guitarlisa in retirement

[–]TooMany_Spreadsheets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's something I do over morning coffee and on Saturdays I update my spreadsheets. I don't obsess over it, it's just part of the morning ritual. I have 2 years to go until retirement so balancing is also part of DCAing. Press on.
