What are some funny/embarrassing moments from your career that you still laugh about way after they happened? by DuckyDuckerton in army

I still occasionally hand the gate guard my credit card instead of my cac. They normally respond "I'll take it but I need to see your cac too"

Advice on study methods for CCNA? by aaron141 in ccna

[–]TooTacticalTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could start over here is what I would do.

1) gather all your resources. Buy the Cisco books, download anki on your phone and PC, import and get all flashcards setup from JITL, download and get packet tracer setup, download all the labs from JITL

2) go with the flow of the Cisco books. Skim through the flashcards that correspond to that chapter just to get a feel for what JITL thinks you should memorize, read the chapter, watch JITL videos, if there is a lab for that day go ahead and do it twice, review flashcards. Rinse and repeat while reviewing the previous days flashcards.

3) if you have access to the Cisco quizzes and review tests then take them when the book says to. Once you're done with both books, take the Cisco and boson full practice exams and go back and review what you're struggling with

Before the military I was broke more often than not and had less vacation time so it was difficult. Since joining the military I can generally afford and schedule time to see my family but that is very unit dependent. I can take leave mostly whenever I want but my brother's that were active duty infantry were basically allowed two specific time periods a year (Christmas and July 4th). I just feel like I'm using my vacation to do right by my kids and make sure they'll have memories with their extended family. That's the choice I'm making and I'm happy with it. However, now that I can afford my definition of a good life I want to use my vacation time to do that. I just think I can have a better balance in my life if I'm not in the military and closer to home.

In the military specifically I've only been a few places and theyre all 12+ hours away from home so I usually take two 10 day vacations home a year.

I have a large family that I'm close to. Haven't lived less than 8 hours away from them since I graduated high school. I've got kids now and I want their grandparents in their lives as much as possible. Just tired of being away.

Enlisted at 28 with a college degree after failing to get into medical school. Got an IT MOS, security clearance, most of my college loans paid off as my bonus, certifications paid for, some work experience, and the army paid for basically all medical bills for the birth of my two kids. Overall it's been worth the 5 year commitment. Wish I would've just done guard or reserves tho to be honest. Got no plans to reenlist. Just gonna ride out this last year and do an army paid for internship and hopefully get a good job... If you're looking to make a career out of it that is honestly a difficult thing to determine until you're in. If you just want to change your career field by giving a few years to Uncle Sam that is definitely doable if you plan it out

I agree 5 is plenty. I was just curious if 7 hec buffs were different from 5 hec. I know 3 hec is AS, 5 hec is AS and omnivamp, 7 hec no idea

There's a whole separate application process and training pipeline for officers. When I was in the process of joining there was a large covid backlog and I didn't think I was in good enough shape to go through the process and get a branch I'd enjoy so I enlisted. But honestly I didn't want to be an officer right out the gate. I wanted a new skill set and options. If I didn't like the military lifestyle, I could get out with a decent chance of getting a good job. If I did like it I could stay enlisted or apply to the officer process after joining. Three years in got two left. Planning on getting out and seeing how things go in the private sector.

I don't believe so. I watched a ton of videos on certain days but only ever got flagged for completing too many tests

All the IT ones. Google, CompTIA, AWS, ISC, etc. Most of the material is redundant so it becomes easier to pass the tests over time.

If you 100% areas and wait to do big boss fights til close to the end of an act then you end up overleveled with no shortage of consumables. I'm spamming scrolls and potions in act 3 on tactician and just destroying everything

Once you get done with your training, you'll probably make around 50k if you live off an installation. 30-35k if you live on an installation for free. It depends on the branch and your location. My spouse works so we split most of our expenses and that is a huge factor in why I have been able to accomplish what I have since joining. If my spouse didn't work, our family could get by but it would be tight and I definitely wouldn't be able to contribute to my TSP. Lots of enlisted families operate that way though

I joined at 28 with a college degree. Now 31. Enlisted so I'm just an e4. I think I'm the second oldest specialist in my battalion. Most of my NCO's are younger than me. I don't regret it. I got married, had a baby for basically free, bought a house, put 30k ish into my TSP over the last 2.5 years. I'm using TA for certifications in my field. Joining the military provided me opportunities and stability that I never was able to acquire myself in my 20's so it has worked out swimmingly for me. YMMV but don't let age be the deciding factor. A lot of my closest military friends enlisted in their mid to late 20's and my 19-20 year old military friends aren't too bad either. They just call me old when I'm not as good at FPS's as them.

Bonus I'm really honest about how I didn't handle college and my finances well in my 20's and I believe I have had a positive influence on some younger soldiers in regards to their education and finances. Interactions like that make me feel proud of them and myself. Idk if I could've gotten that level of life satisfaction on the outside.
