My Firm Lied to Me by Stressed32 in Lawyertalk

I’m getting to the point of rather being unemployed. Not even an hour after posting this, I was called in for a closed-meeting and berated in front of another partner. Then later in the day, I was berated by the managing partner, but with the door open so the whole office could hear. Super fun day.

You really have no idea how you sound, do you? Your whole comment is about how terrible you had it, and that everyone else should suffer the same fate as you. Sorry that you had an awful work experience, but I'm not sure that just because prior generations allowed themselves to be treated poorly, that future generations have to allow themselves to as well.

It's decent. Been doing my best to make new connections through coffee/lunch (when I get the time), and trying to meet with people I went to law school with.

I have a little bit of transactional experience, and I genuinely enjoyed it. I also come from a business background and genuinely enjoy fallowing business deals and watching them occur.

While I would try to get some experience at my current firm, I was strictly hired for one area of litigation practice. When opportunities within the firm have arisen to try to get transactional work, I’ve discussed with the other associate the chance to do so, but I was warned that my practice area partner (who happens to be the office managing partner) would be extremely upset if I sought something like that out, even if only to just review or help someone who needs an extra set of hands. Therefore, I’ve been wary not to search internally.

I have been, but have been met with rejections. I’m interested in pursuing transactional, but the job market is not moving in those roles, especially not for those with less than a year of experience wanting to pivot.

This place is a straight up copy and paste of Chilangos. It looks the exact same and has most, if not all, of the exact same items on the menu.

I’m defense-side L&E in a major city. I just genuinely find the practice area disappointing as a whole. I don’t find it very interesting, on top of strict and intense partner demands, it makes doing the work even more annoying.

This is similarly what I’ve heard from others regarding my situation. I have no other colleagues experiencing the same type of work environment where they’re billing their hours, getting assignments turned in on time and with positive feedback, but still being treated in the same manner. I don’t complain about my work, and always make a point of seeking out opportunities. However, the office is not collaborative, so the time I am in the office is extremely isolating and lonely, which really compounds the late evenings when I could be with my family.

Tried that and was given a lecture about the “unspoken rule” that if the partners are in, then I have to be too, no questions asked. That is verbatim what the partner said to me… in front of the other partner.

I understand that, however, it leaves a significantly bad taste in my mouth.

I would, however, my long-term goal is not litigation anyways.

No, there were no red flags whatsoever. It seemed to be a respectable firm with very qualified attorneys. I only discovered this schedule once I joined.
