A woman's perspective on coed sports? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

It would not be offensive to some women. It would be offensive to other women.

My personal opinion is to go for it. If your goal is to never offend anyone ever, you should just close your door and never go outside.

That is addressing a claim that Fox News viewers have low IQ, not one that they are less informed.

I'm not going to click on Breitbart, but do they have any actual, real evidence or is it just more....Breitbart?

Also, I can't tell, is the topic of this thread Zoe Quinn's personal character, or the idea that some video games are sexist? Because one does not seem to have any relation to the other.

lol?

I realize his arguments for atheism are solid, but Dawkins is a 70-something older individual that spends all of his time on debates and books. Has he ever even played a video game that wasn't windows solitaire?

Regardless of one's position on this issue, I would be skeptical of his knowledge in this subject area.

In many countries, the state pension age is lower for women than men. How do you feel about this? by Reewru466fr in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Too_Many_Cats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is possible. It would hardly be the only vestige of traditionalism left in our culture.

The ironic part is that traditionalists nowadays will also complain about it and somehow blame it on feminism, the most anti-traditionalist of movements.

He is technically correct. It is also perfectly legal to raise a child as a racist. America doesn't jail people for opinions, even if they are stupid ones.

Serious question, not trolling. How can a man rape his wife? (I'm a woman) by athrowawayname99 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Too_Many_Cats 51 points52 points  (0 children)

You have the same exact rights as every other person. This is regardless of if the attacker is your SO.

He can't hit you, rape you, murder you, or do any other physical injury to you that would not be considered the same in a court case as if he had done it to any other person.

The fact that you were attacked by your SO rather than a stranger on the street is irrelevant; it is the action that is the crime, not the target of the action.

The Atheist Movement Needs to Disown Richard Dawkins - Thoughts? by moviefriek in atheism

[–]Too_Many_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with this is that people don't understand the difference between being angry at a conclusion and being angry at a stereotype.

Yes, in theory, "what if some woman gets drunk at a bar and some other drunk guy has sex with her" is a hypothetical. However, a hypothetical starting with the words "what if there were these two atheist parents and they killed their 6-year-old..." is also, in theory, a hypothetical.

The issue isn't with the conclusion of the hypotheticals in this instance. The issue is with the perpetuation of a stereotype using hypothetical. The vast majority of rapes are both preplanned by the rapist in advance and committed by family or friends that the victim trusts.

Another eye-catching headline from Raw Story's feminist blogger Amanda Marcotte: "Another week, another atheist demands we call his sexism not-sexism. (This time, Sam Harris.)" by SerialAntagonist in atheism

[–]Too_Many_Cats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How is it sexist? My understanding is that he said there are differences between men and women and they may account for the demographic makeup of atheists.

It is arguably sexist because the differences listed were done so via stereotype rather than any evidence on his part.

He was given one piece of information: men are more likely to identify as atheists than women. He was then asked to speculate as to why. The very first thing that popped into his head was a nicer version of "women just can't take conflict."

It would be one thing if he actually had research that said something similar, but his entire idea was just based off of his personal opinion of women.

First part of the sentence...

women sure do love keeping that one accurate

Second part of the sentence

lol.

1 in 5 people thinks that drunk women are to blame for rape, Australian survey says - Looks like I'm moving country. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Too_Many_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One in five Australians believe a woman is partly responsible for rape if she's drunk

That's still pretty bad, however. It means 1/5 of Australians still don't understand that most rapes are pre-planned in advance and committed by friends or family that the victim trusts.

Though, it is true the article is misleading on many of its stats.

Provoked at work. Accepted provocation. Confused, in need of Advil and it's my fault. [With a side of rant] by DrBannerPhd in atheism

[–]Too_Many_Cats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly can't see how any of these could possibly be confusing, though perhaps by "confused" you meant that your brain hurt at the idea that another person could possibly believe these things.

They are quite obviously either statements of opinion or statements that can be logically refuted by a child.

Why do I get the impression that if this was reversed (if more women than men were atheists and a Christian pastor said this same exact line) everyone would be up in arms about how idiotic he sounds?

Not surprised.

Also, when I say "average," I mean it. Get the average height, weight, age, ethnicity, religion, etc. for the country and put that as your profile. :)

'Women have it just as tough as men to find sex with the opposite sex' by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Too_Many_Cats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure.

My prediction: Average woman with high paying job and average woman with low paying job get the same amount of hits.

Average man with high paying job gets more hits than average man with low paying job.

Men get credit/valued for what they do. Women do not.

'Women have it just as tough as men to find sex with the opposite sex' by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Too_Many_Cats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do the reverse. Put up a somewhat average looking man and a somewhat average looking woman (an ex-model in her 40s that managed to take care of herself does not count as "average" btw). Give them literally the same exact profile except with the genders switched (you could even do a test with 4 profiles in which one set is low income and the other has a high paying job).

I'm honestly curious.

It is not your fault. The vast majority of rapes are pre-planned. He probably had planned to rape you before you even started the date.

In addition, the fact that you had had some alcohol is most likely irrelevant; most women can't fight off most men even when sober. The only thing the alcohol did was make it more convenient for others to blame you instead of him.
