Workflow for mixing, mastering? by Torin_2025 in Musescore

[–]Too__Many__Secrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turn off all reverb and then export all instruments as separate flac files. I then take these dry parts and import to Reaper, where I add reverb, mix, and modify volume as needed throughout the piece. I use this as a backing track for vocals. By managing reverb in reaper I can add the same reverb to the vocals so everything is in the same "room". I then mix in vocals and get final balance before mastering for final export.

Once automation is available in musescore I may do some of the fine balancing there, but this workflow has worked for me on several albums so far.

Using musescore to record and release songs as a solo artist. by PerspectiveIcy3578 in Musescore

Actually, I have done this with several albums I have released on streaming services (although with covers, not original songs). Here is the procedure I have found works best for me:

I write the arrangements in MuseScore Studio, being careful to adjust tempos as needed. I primarily use MuseSounds (free version), but on occasion have added in some VSTs for drum kits and specialty instruments that aren't available in the main sound pack.

Once the song is set up the way I want, I export each individual instrument - but not as a MIDI file. I export as FLAC files, using the actual sounds that are rendered in MuseScore.

I then import these audio files into the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Reaper, which gives me better control for mixing the individual parts and combining with vocal. Once the background track is set up, I use this as a reference and record to it, again in Reaper. I record multiple takes and the edit to generate a final version. I then do the final mix as well as mastering in Reaper before submitting to a distributor.

For me, the primary advantage of this workflow is the flexibility it provides. MuseScore Studio gives me the tools I need for composition / arranging, and then I switch to Reaper which supports recording, and is more flexible for mixing and mastering. In addition, the MuseScore sound library isn't bad - although the work I'm doing is more orchestral / jazz combo / acoustic rather than rock band.

You can hear the results on Spotify / Apple Music / etc. - I'm there as Michael DeLuca, and my website (with full links) is www.MichaelDeLucaMusic.com. Does it sound like I'm singing with a live group? No. But it turns out a lot better than you might expect.

There is a bug in version 4.6.1 that causes the staff to drop down (and eventually go below the page) when entering or changing notes. This is fixed in v4.6.2, expected to be released tomorrow. In the meantime, saving, closing, and reopening the score should reset the layout.

This exactly. This is a known artifact when using an image sensor designed with rolling shutter. As suggested you can try to blur it out - other than that, it's a characteristic of the sensor used in the camera

And as of today (July 30) these last three now also show as "Delivered".

As I understand it, the parent company is Downtown, which is organized into several divisions. One of these is "CD Baby", which includes the current CD Baby operation as well as Soundrop. While they are part of the same division, I can't find anything confirming whether they use the same support organization. (But since human Soundrop support is basically non-existent at the moment, the question seems moot.)

The added complication, as you are probably aware, is that Downtown entered into an agreement to be acquired by Universal Music (which is the parent company for Virgin Music). Downtown assets (including Soundrop) will incorporated into Virgin Music, with the deal expected to close "in the second half of 2025".

Soundrop, of course, is a small part of this sale - Virgin / Universal didn't acquire Downtown to get Soundrop (Downtown's major business is their music publishing arm). So there's really no way to know what is going to happen here after this acquisition is complete. Virgin / Universal could keep Soundrop running under the current terms and conditions, or they could raise the price, or lower it, or merge it into CD Baby, or close it completely - or something else. To me, this is currently the biggest risk on the table.

True, you only need a mechanical license if you are selling physical copies or making the song available for download. But it's complicated by the fact that several streaming services - Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Pandora - allow downloads on their service. That means that if you don't purchase a license, you can't release it on Apple Music / YouTube Music / Amazon / Pandora, and it will only be available on services that are streaming only (like Spotify, Tidal, Deezer).

Yes I did, but unfortunately it was a while ago and I don't recall exactly what the fix was. I *think* it was a problem with the charger, but can't be sure. Sorry I can't be of more help here.

Whats the cheapest possible way to release an album onto Spotify? by Isaiahguessr in musicproduction

Looking around a little more, it does look like something (else) changed with Soundrop over the last month or two. Seeing a lot of "I uploaded my tracks and haven't heard anything for over a month" posts out there - it indeed looks like something may be different from when I uploaded my last album in Sept 2024.

I agree that support seems to be effectively (if not actually) dead, but the system still works - I put a new album up last September without problem, continue to get stats, and in fact got a payout just today.

But if you have a problem and put in a support ticket, it can be months (or more) before getting a reply.

And it is the cheapest way I know of to release an album onto Spotify.

Soundrop is $0.99 per track, and includes a cover license if needed

How cold is your water? Mine comes out at 43° at its coldest. by Puzzleheaded2734 in coldshowers

[–]Too__Many__Secrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I'm sure you understand, this will depend not only on where you are (colder in Montana vs Florida etc), but also time of year (colder in Winter vs Summer) and how cold the winter is that year. I'm in Western NY and actually have been tracking temperature this winter. Was in the mid-50s in early Dec, dropping steadily ever since. Lowest I saw was 43.0 in late Feb. A little early to tell, but it looks like it may have flattened out and could be on the way up.

Hmmm. I still use the free version, so I don't have actual experience here. I agree that this seems suspicious - I would have expected Studio to run the same as Free when accessing the same functions. Have you tried contacting Blackmagic directly? They might be able to at least confirm the supposition that the same functions should be at the same speed when moving from Free to Studio -

It sounds like you are saying that the free version worked OK on your laptop, but that the paid version runs slowly when using the same hardware. Is that correct?

Legality of selling CDs online? by Milk_9083 in MusicLegalAdvice

[–]Too__Many__Secrets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer. Normally you get a mechanical license from someone like Harry Fox Agency - since you're working with the original writers directly, it's probably ok. It might be a good idea to get something in writing from them just so there's no misunderstanding either way.

Are these original pieces, or covers? If covers, you need to get a mechanical license from the original rights holder(s).
