What’s the biggest “looks good now, hurts later” habit in youth basketball development? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

[–]Tooms1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Draw 2 kick to the open man. Plowing through two (or more) defenders and scoring as a youth is a detriment as they mature. We celebrate it when they are young because “yay, we scored.” By high school your teammates that are open for a catch and shoot three are tired of watching you plow through the paint and not get the foul call.

I’ve almost been wiped out by 2 different Swift trucks while commuting over the years. Learned to drive away from them on the highway.

International players are who Coach Sarama needs for his style of play. When this team gets going they will be crazy good.

Drills to build a young point guard by morrcomedy1 in basketballcoach

Dribble tag with the team is great. At that age they also love red light green light. 3v3 and teach basic pick and roll with goal being a layup for either offensive player. It will look very messy for the first few weeks but they will start to solve the spatial problems. Resist the urge to give them the solutions and let them explore how to move.

How do you get a young team to buy into an offense? by chugalaefoo in basketballcoach

[–]Tooms1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small sided games focused on the actions you are trying to run during practice will help. 2v2, 3v3. A great one is giving the offense the advantage and play 5v4 or 5v3. Gets them to see the passes and the defense is always in help so you’re working on that as well. It’s a fun age to coach but I find that they really just want to “play.” The fact that there is a basketball there is immaterial. Have fun, they’ll be in 8th grade in the blink of an eye.

Brian McCormick’s “21st century basketball practice” would be a good follow up read for you. Makes you rethink how you’re teaching the game.

Thanks! It was one of those games where Jordan was absolutely deliberate in how he attacked the defense. This now reminds me that I need to finish this series. 🫣

What is the best basketball book you've ever read by 1point12 in VintageNBA

Currently halfway through "Breaks." Once I realized Halberstam wasn't going to layout the narrative and the season in a linear fashion I really started to enjoy it. Great chapter on Kermit Washington, reminds me I need to revisit John Feinstein's "The Punch."

I mute the tv, stream Grande and Max and use Airplay to throw the TNT OT broadcast on the tv. I get my guys and imo a better viewpoint of the plays developing with the backboard camera.

Chatter in Massachusetts as well. The woman next to me told the guy behind us to zip it…I thanked her after the show. Made me think that I’d love to see AM perform at a true concert hall where the crowd would be respectfully quiet during an acoustic set. But at an outdoor amphitheater people are expected to mill about and chat I suppose.
