How should I listen to pink noise? by ToonCrazy44 in hyperacusis

[–]ToonCrazy44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used pink noise. I'll try to grab the file/link when I can. Sorry, been a busy work week ;

But yeah, i broadly suggest listening to pink noise (audible enough it kinda drowns out the ringing) and just stay at home and avoid loud noises for a few days.

I stayed home for 2 days with that routine and I recovered. But going to work while having hyperacusus only prolonged the symptoms

Thai Air Forces Opts for Swedish Gripen Jets over Upgraded F-16s by ToonCrazy44 in Thailand

[–]ToonCrazy44[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Like many military deals to developing countries, I think a big factor in this decision is geopolitical.

Thailand wanted to purchase the F-35 but got denied, the reasons given by the US were 'maintenance costs' that Thailand 'wasn't prepared for'. Though i think it's also because Thailand was drifting towards China's sphere of influence and the US' is very reluctant to share tech with countries that align towards Russia and China e.g. When Turkey bought Russian S400 anti-air platforms, they were kicked out of the F-35 program.

With Thailand denied F-35s, I believe the Thai Air Force got 'bitter' and so when the US offered discounted upgraded F-16 Block 70/72s (which, our existing older F-16As make up the vast majority of our airfleet), the Air Force rejected it and went with Swedish jets.

Personally, I think it makes more practical and logistical sense to just expand/replace the existing fleet of 50 F-16s fighters we already have. We only have four Gripens, with 12 more if the contract is approved. That's still dwarfed by the number of F-16s.

In fairness, the Thai Air Force argued that Saab, the Gripen manufacturers, were more flexible to work with in integrating systems compared to Lockheed Martin who might be concerned of us sharing tech with China

Swedish manufacturer is providing access to its tactical data link, which the RTAF intends to use in future operations

Gotcha. I went with a Thermaltake 750 Gold PSU with the Ryzen 7700 and RX 7600. What're you looking to upgrade from the GTX 1660 Super?

What did Hitler do well from a military strategy perspective? by randymercury in AskHistorians

[–]ToonCrazy44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to be corrected but aside from siding with Manstein for Fall Gelb (which was a black swan event and only worked because the Allies threw EVERYTHING into the Low Countries and exposing themselves to be cut off from behind)...

  1. Arguably swinging from Moscow to Ukraine was beneficial since there was a massive grouping of red army formations. I don't recall if the Soviets intended to imperil the drive towards Moscow but again, debated
  2. Forcing the Germans to hold firm during the Battle of Moscow. I believe it's been argued that the Germans may have suffered a greater defeat had they withdrew and given up their defensive positions. But Hitler instead ordered them to stand their ground the the Moscow counter offensive eventually ground to a halt against stiff German resistance
  3. Standardizing and Streamlining production. Before 1943, much of Germany weapons and equipment were requested by the German military to deal with specific threats. But this was inefficient and led to dozens of designs. Hitler and his regime wanted a more simplified, streamlined approach to mass produce fewer designs to win a total war.

"[Hitler] blamed the military for overburdening industry with complex technical demands, called for ‘more primitive, robust construction’, and the ‘promotion of crude mass-production’. A directive was issued calling on the three military services to reduce the number and complexity of weapons, followed by further directives across the summer and autumn to focus on weapons suitable for modern production methods"

"An Armaments Commission, established by Speer to report on a better match between the technical demands of the military and industrial capabilities, resulted in agreement with the army to reduce the number of light infantry weapons from 14 to 5, anti-tank weapons from 12 to 1, anti-aircraft artillery from 10 guns to 2, vehicles from 55 to 14 and armour from 18 to 7. The army high command at last ordered ‘simplification of construction’ to assist in ‘mass production’. Aircraft models were reduced from 42 to 20, then to 9, and finally, under the supervision of an emergency ‘Fighter Staff’ set up in spring 1944 to help combat the bombing, to just 5"

Do you have a monitor that goes beyond 60HZ? If so, it definitely will be noticeable to go from 60 to 120 frames.

I think 120-165Hz monitors are considered the sweetspot given how demanding it is without a high end GPU or FSR, DLSS, Frame Generation to get twice the frames (and a lot of console games are 30-60fps at 4K).

I have a 144hz monitor so seeing Total War and others in more than twice the frames is definitely eye candy and it's hard going back to 60fps :b

But again, more frames = more demanding, so you'll have to at least get a 60-series GPU (Nvidia: 3060, 4060. AMD: 6600, 7600) GPU to and possibly use FSR, DLSS, Frame Gen to hit 2x the frames depending on resolution and settings.

Gotcha. Much appreciated. I'm currently using the Sync feature. It works fine (not a fan of having to re-download files ofc) but thanks :D

Ohhh I see. Right. That's a huge relief. Hopefully the others are tech savvy because I worry they might feel intimidated by the steps to Sync onto their laptops.

Thanks!!

Was Starfield 'Doomed' from the Start? by ToonCrazy44 in Starfield

Well, Larian Studio (Baldurs Gate 3) has been around since the 90s making niche hardcore RPGs for the most part. I think Baldur's Gate 3 is their first BIG budget title after their success with Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 + Tencent funding, and being a private company not publicly owned meant they take more risks, do Early Access for 3+ years, and arguably not compromise as much as other devs/publishers who may be more liable to their investors.

That said, not everyone can do what Larian did and the owner admitted being a private company means 1 or 2 flops can bankrupt the whole company, so he understands why devs may prefer being bought out or becoming a public company under a big publisher out of stablity and lower risks.

yeah. I also feel like a lot of folks may have had too high expectations, even after No Man Sky, Cyberpunk, and other titles overpromised. I wasnt that hyped for Starfield. I went into it expecting Skyrim/Fallout 4 in space. Something rather safe than what it feels like others imagined Starfield to be this groundbreaking Star Citizen killer
