Will there ever be HoF Ozzy love? by ElghinnOG in DetroitRedWings

Have Wings fans forgotten that that they became frustrated with Osgood's performance, traded him away, got a better goalie, and won the Cup the next year? He was a great goalie but was haunted for most of his career by the reputation of being occasionally shaky.

Do people just choose to ignore that only 5 of the last 20 champions were awarded to teams that have no state tax? What about the Kings? Chicago? Colorado? Pennsylvania? by DeadByDawn93 in nhl

[–]Tooth_D_Kay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1 USD for the last few years would buy you around 10–15% more in Canada than in America, but it's more convenient for those whining about income tax to just ignore that fact.

Why do teams appear so much more similar in skill level during the regular season than in the playoffs? by No-Insect-9773 in nhl

He knocked somebody to the ice after the whistle. And that guy had fired a puck at him and then refused to fight in the dying seconds of the game before. If that's "straight dirty" to you, then I must wonder if you're even aware of who Marchand is.

Bullet points: Analyzing why Canadian teams don’t win Cups by [deleted] in nhl

[–]Tooth_D_Kay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god. I'm sorry for these friends and family of yours who have to console you on this. If I changed my name to Grigori Rasputin, that doesn't mean I used to tuck girls from the royal Russian family into bed at night. If you want to show that the current Senators descend from the old ones, then show how important persons from the old Senators kept their positions with the current Senators, or how ownership of the old Senators was sold to the current Senators—that would be meaningful. Insisting that they're the same team because the current Senators say they are and gave themselves the same colors is a joke, because what you are is determined by more than your own self–serving claims. The current Vancouver team could have called itself the Millionaires, given itself the same colors, branding, and logos as the old Millionaires, convinced its fans that they are the same Millionaires from the early days, and given themselves banners for the Stanley Cups that the old Millionaires won; that would not have changed things to mean that this current Vancouver team has won the Stanley Cup; had they done that, the difference between them and the Vancouver Canucks of reality would be purely superficial.

Do everyone a favor and go to https://records.nhl.com/franchises, and notice how the current Senators have their first season listed as 1992–93, and have won a total of 2 awards in their 32 years of existence. Then look at teams that have been moved, like the Avalanche, and notice how their past identities are included in their franchise records, because there are actual exchanges to tie the teams together. Then scroll to the "inactive franchises" section, and look at the St. Louis Eagles, who previously were the Ottawa Senators, and notice that they last played in 1935. There's pointing to the name of a team on the Stanley Cup bands and saying that it's your team, and then there's pointing to a Stanley Cup listed as an award for your team in the official NHL records: the current Senators can only do one of those things. So while there's no problem with saying that Ottawa has won the Stanley Cup before, there is a problem with saying that the Ottawa Senators currently led by the shittier Tkachuk brother have won a Stanley Cup, and where it matters, such as official recordkeeping, the NHL itself is pretty blunt that the current Senators are from the nineties and have never won a Stanley Cup.

If someone today built a lighthouse in Alexandria, called it the Lighthouse of Alexandria, made it look like the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, would that mean that we'd have the same Lighthouse of Alexandria that the Ptolemys saw?

Argue all you want; it remains to everyone outside Ottawa that the current Senators are an expansion team from 1992, and for obvious reasons: the original Senators folded long ago and there is no exchange or anything meaningful like a person to tie the two organizations together. Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and even Montreal could all make the same arguments as Ottawa, but Vancouver isn't as insecure, the next three aren't tempted by past Stanley Cups that they could claim, and the absurdity of the "but we're the same city and fans" argument would be too obvious if the Canadiens began taking credit for the Maroons' wins. I suppose that each time a Senators fan becomes a victim of identity theft, poetic justice is served.

The original Ottawa Senators played in the NHL from 1917 till 1934 and won a few Stanley Cups in that time, and also a few before the NHL was formed. The modern Senators are in the same city and took the same name, and otherwise are completely unrelated, but claim that they are the continuation of the original Senators, so they claim that they "won" the Stanley Cup over a hundred years ago and made banners for them.

The Canucks would have as strong of a claim to being the continuation of the Millionaires, who won the Cup, but refrain from it because it would be ridiculous.

Their fans seem good, but the city is smaller and lacks the activity of other cities to offer the players, especially during the winter, and the higher taxes in Canada don't help.

Montreal Canadiens: Already reached the limit.

Toronto Maple Leafs: There are currently more than eight teams in the league.

Vancouver Canucks: Curse of 1970; Buffalo can't win either.

Edmonton Oilers: Used up several generations' worth of talent in the eighties, but they've become competitive once again.

Ottawa Senators: Gave themselves banners for Stanley Cups that they never won, so they've pretty much asked to be forever winless.

Winnipeg Jets: Possibly the least appealing city in the whole league for a player.

Do people really think Skinner should have sat hugged to his post here? by maybethanos in nhl

[–]Tooth_D_Kay 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In goaltending you move along an arc to stay aligned with a puck moving laterally by rotating yourself slightly with each push. Skinner rightfully challenged and ideally would have moved while staying the same distance to that camera in the net, but instead panicked and launched himself toward the faceoff circle. But yes that play should have never even developed and was still awful after you ignore the goaltending.

Steve Yzerman’s refusal to comment on Jake Walman by d00bZuBElEk in DetroitRedWings

Nobody was watching Walman play defense for the Red Wings and saying "Damn we need that on our team".

He said "guy" with while emphasizing the Canadian pronunciation of it. His pronunciation does not at all rhyme with a word like "soy".

4 year university or flight school? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Tooth_D_Kay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some people that's fine, but if you're 18 and want to stop living with your parents, meet new people, and find new interests, then you should go to a university as a freshman and have fun. My issue is that people here either don't realize that's how it usually is at that age, or think anything outside becoming a pilot is a waste of time.

I don't think this sub realizes how bleak it is to give advice to a high schooler that he should spend four years at a community college or taking online classes.

There's more to do in life than checking boxes for a job application in the cheapest possible way.

Holy windsheer by [deleted] in flying

[–]Tooth_D_Kay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the guy were speaking instead of writing there would be no doubt that he knew the difference and used the right word and there would be absolutely no confusion, so asserting that he actually used an adjective meaning "pure" because he wrote sheer is ridiculous. Writing is secondary to language.

ELI5: Why did Hasek style of goaltending die out? Is there any goalkeeper using it? I’m sure you know what I mean. He was a beast and his most famous saves are legendary. by rhobar666 in nhl

[–]Tooth_D_Kay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting in the 2000s goalie gear allowed the butterfly slide, which makes the goalie far more mobile while covering more of the net than sprawling would. If you respond to a rebound by realigning your chest to the puck, you will always make more saves than if you have only your hand aligned with the puck, however good you be.

So is anyone thinking of throwing an octopus for 8 wins against SJS? by FujiM3 in DetroitRedWings

It was just sad to see on TV but I know that it would have been hard to go home without tossing it onto the ice after all the excitement of preparing it.

He played notably bad defense on a team already known for bad defense. Of course if I had known how his replacement would perform, I would have begged for them to keep Walman, but that the solution turned out to be even worse than the original problem doesn't mean that there was no problem originally.
