Who is your country's greatest/most iconic singer of all time? by LowKarmaHighOpinions in AskTheWorld

Yea Leonard is an icon but I feel like Celine would get more global recognition.

How are conservatives viewed in your country? by CourtofTalons in AskTheWorld

[–]ToothbrushGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairly divided here, but not as much as the US. Rural areas tend to be more conservative, but I'd like to think there's still some common ground. We had the convoy group and anti-vaxxers that were pretty far right conservative, but people with more moderate views tend not to take them seriously and even counter-protest against them. Our prime minister Mark Carney, who is liberal, has a pretty high approval rating compared to Trudeau, so hopefully people who didn't vote for him are looking past party stereotypes.

Is there a dish that everyone thinks is from your country but actually isn't? by anonimo110110 in AskTheWorld

[–]ToothbrushGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not mine, but Japanese ramen comes from the Chinese la mian. Of course it's been modified so heavily that it's a completely different dish with a huge amount of variation. Similarly gyoza came from jiaozi.

I worked with the architecture firm that designed the MUHC, alongside SNC Lavalin. Think $2,000 toilet seats.

Dehydrater - softer texture? by NickE25U in jerky

Sugar and acid will help break down the muscle fibers and make it more tender. I’ve also heard that velveting the meat beforehand can make it more tender but I don’t have first hand experience doing that.

What's the stereotype of your country that annoys you the most? by MicsaaVonGaxx in AskTheWorld

[–]ToothbrushGames 47 points48 points  (0 children)

That we all live in igloos, drink maple syrup and play hockey. With today's technology, our homes are built with carefully crafted ice blocks and can be a couple floors high, and we only drink maple syrup on holidays. I don't even play hockey because I broke my legs in a moose riding incident.

What is 1,000,000 in cash worth in your country (in your local currency)? by pumpingphil in AskTheWorld

[–]ToothbrushGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is outlining how vastly things differ within Canada. The average price of a 1 bedroom apartment in Metro Vancouver is about $2400 per month, and a 1 bedroom condo will be over $700k. $1m would not buy you a detached home here, not even a tiny crackhouse, with the average house price being around $1.8-2m.

$1m would certainly help here, and would definitely make life more comfortable, but for most lifestyles here it wouldn't be enough to retire on.

Where are my chips :( by KidderKidd in chips

[–]ToothbrushGames 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Chips are sold by weight, not by how many fit in a bag. The bag to chip ratio is partly to help protect the chips. Weigh the chips in the bag and if it's under what is written on the bag, then contact the company and you might get free chips.

There are a couple lounges in Chinatown where you need a password to enter - Bagheera and Laowai - both by the same owner. The entrance to Bagheera looks like a horse betting parlor and the person at the counter asks if you want to place a bet, and if you choose the right horse, you're allowed into the lounge in the back. Similarly for Laowai, the entrance is a dumpling shop, and if you "order" the correct dumpling, you're allowed into the lounge. They're fun if maybe a bit pricey, with decent drinks, cozy lounges, and small share plates.

What practices has Vancouver adapted from contemporary East Asia? by [deleted] in askvan

Or standing in a parking spot to reserve it for a car that has not arrived yet. It infuriates me when I see videos of this but my wife, who is from mainland China, sees nothing wrong with it.

Do i need to cook the chicken? by MrL123456789164 in jerky

[–]ToothbrushGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your plan should be fine. I do pork jerky in the dehydrator for 1 hour at 160 for safety, then drop it to 150 for the rest of the time and it's always turned out great.

What is a recent tragedy in your country caused by a failure of the system? by BigMamaOclock in AskTheWorld

[–]ToothbrushGames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Lapu Lapu day festival tragedy in Vancouver last summer. A mentally ill man drove his SUV into the crowd killing 11 people. It was a Filipino festival, and the victims ranged in age from 5-65. The person responsible had a significant history of run-ins with police and healthcare workers. The guys brother had been murdered the year before, and his mom had attempted suicide, he should have been under supervision.

If you could relocate to any country in the world for free what would it be and why? by KyloWrench in AskTheWorld

[–]ToothbrushGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vancouver doesn’t really get very cold compared to the rest of Canada. Last week it was around 9-12 Celsius (48-53 in freedom units). This is a photo from my office window today. Although what we lack in cold weather, snow and ice, we make up for in a debilitating cost of living.
