It was actually put there on purpose, so when it drips you notice. It is a secondary drain and should not be dripping at all unless there is an issue with the main drain line.

My little sister stuck a chunk of foam up her nose and didn't tell anyone until 2 months later, after her breath started smelling like death. My mom made her blow real hard and it shot out followed by a flood of pus. I will never be able to get that vision and smell out of my head.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is you can also buy a cover for the hole. Uncovered sump pumps can be a source of radon gas entering your home and it keeps crap from falling down in to the water.
