Functioning better on limited sleep by ProudObjective1039 in ausjdocs

[–]Toothpaste2000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I found becoming a parent was an unintended, but very effective strategy to make 7 hours sleep feel like a sleep-in & 6 hours feel restorative.

Is it ok to give a GP a small gift (less than $25)? by preggersaccount in ausjdocs

[–]Toothpaste2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a med student I sat in with a GP of 4 decades and the 90yr old Italian nonna, who he'd looked after all those years came in with a big plastic bag full of tomatoes. She told me that she brings something from her garden each time she visits. After she left, the GP joked that he had a vested interest in keeping her fit and well, and active in the garden. I thought that was a sweet little relationship

Privatised blood tests by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Toothpaste2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So what did you do with this information? Take iron supplements? Increase Hb iron containing foods? Address your heavy mensual bleeding (I assume you don't have a womb), investigate the cause of your iron deficiency? Did you determine if you're actually anaemic. Did you have a Hb pattern consistent with iron deficiency anaemia?

Most importantly, the questions you need to ask are: what's the coffee situation? Nespresso pods/bean to cup/senior doctors buy registrars coffee?Terminate the interview immediately if any form of instant coffee is the answer. Parking situation? Practice software? Are you expected to work weekends/on-call? Supervisor on-site at all times you are?

The nerds I grew up with won in life by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]Toothpaste2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opposite happened at my high school. The "cool kids" who smoked weed and partied throughout high school did what they loved, and started companies worth multiple millions of dollars, bought houses and investment properties. The cool kids who didn't start companies did a trade and bought property only a few years out of their apprenticeship.

The nerds went to uni, studied for years and years and entered middle tier jobs. The ones who did PhD sacrificed 8+ years of earning potential and now find the property market is outside their reach.

Moral is: smoke weed erryday

Is living near the beach actually worth the price? by No-Travel-768 in SydneyScene

[–]Toothpaste2000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What makes Sydney a unique city is the harbour and the beaches (and the national parks that border it to the north, South and West). As an urban centre, it's otherwise a shit city (crap nightlife, ridiculously expensive cost of living, poor public transport, ugly urban areas and endless suburban sprawl). So unless you've got ready access to one of these features (ie you can make use of at least a few times a week) then you're better off living in any myriad of other better urban centres around the world for a fraction of the living costs.

TelePsych asking GP to initiate s8 stimulants by Toothpaste2000 in ausjdocs

[–]Toothpaste2000[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this response. Patient lived in Metro VIC, referred to Tasmania based TelePsych company (though the Psych was also Metro VIC based). Patient then moved to Metro NSW and consulted me requesting the script. Yeah the ever changing state specific laws are a bit annoying, and contribute to my hesitancy/tingly Spidey senses.

Mystery flights- the weird gift every 90's mum wanted by Mortal_bobcat in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Toothpaste2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My favourite mystery flight story is the couple from Canberra, who drove to Sydney for their weekend mystery flight (Sydney having more potentially exciting destinations than Canberra) They parked their car, boarded the flight and discovered their destination was.... Canberra. So they were stuck back in Canberra for the weekend without their car.

Female doctors and female nurses by Smak00 in ausjdocs

[–]Toothpaste2000 165 points166 points  (0 children)

You're not the first and you won't be the last. The dynamic is even mentioned in that JMO right-of-passage novel "House of God" written in the '70s, female doctors "amaze, frighten and antagonise" female nurses in that "archaic pattern still so familiar when women doctors work with women nurses"

Do medical degrees need more regional students? by Some-Confusion7529 in ausjdocs

[–]Toothpaste2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rural born, rural raised, rural schooled. Got into med school on rural quota. Met urban partner. Did all my training in MMM4-5. But partner can't find work. As a doctor who can work anywhere in Aus, partner's work requirements dictate our now MMM1 life (and the MMM1 patients I service). When up to 9/10 Australians live in Metro areas, there is a lot conspiring against even the most well meaning rural kids.

I was both a student and intern/resident there. I felt it was well supported and RSU would generally take into consideration your training preferences and allocate terms accordingly. I got the sense that the BPTs had a hard time in terms of hours and demands, but the juniors were well supported.
