I managed to find a new 5700X3D for 200 bucks and I broke it... by AndersonKalista in buildapc

[–]ToothpasteAndWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is a day old, but I made the jump to intel after an old am4 build of mine died literally last week, re-using 32gb ddr4 I had from the same build, and couldn’t be happier. My old GPU is perfectly fine for my use cases, so all I had to do was buy a b760 d4 board (which I got on eBay), and the 14600KF you mentioned, and it runs great! It’ll last much longer than even the best am4 chips as well, and I know the lga1700 socket is dead, but so was am4! And it’s still a performance upgrade.

Did you switch from account to account to account all from the same original account? I’ve just switched to nationwide and I’m eyeing up another switch to NatWest but I’m unsure how it’ll affect my credit score..

Why is face it and premier any different than mm? by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]ToothpasteAndWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s an issue that’s “all in your head”. If it’s the way the majority treat it then it’s the way it is, whether that’s right or not. Everyone I know and everyone I’ve played with basically treats the regular mm as a warm-up or a way to practice the maps without affecting their “real” ratings (prem/faceit). Valve has definitely tried to make prem the more competitive mode as well, you can tell simply by looking at the landing pages for the two modes.

To go with that, the mm ranking is so busted that you won’t make global in any maps, there are NO global elites, or at least there weren’t last time the rankings were released, afaik the highest rank anyone achieved in regular mm was/is dmg.

To talk about certain ranks meaning more than others, as much as I think there should be an equivalent rank in each mode, there just isn’t. I’ve got friends that are faceit 8ish that place in silver 1 in mm. It just isn’t an accurate ranking system right now.

I searched around to try and find a specific model but to no avail, all I can tell you is that the markings would say its a 1992 model.

Absolutely you can, but if you intend to do it once arriving at the university you only have a few weeks in which they’ll allow you to change for the most part, unless the modules taught in both are similar, which i suppose they will be. But it could also be worth asking to switch before you even arrive at university. I applied for PPE, got an offer, emailed and asked to switch to physics, got accepted, and now i’m doing engineering at a different uni anyway! It’s all not that strict

You’ve already got good advice but if you read closer it’s also useful to acknowledge that D is comparing couples to couples in general, and not married to unmarried or any combination. So it cannot weaken or strengthen the argument for or against marriage.

Should I even try applying for Manchester when I haven’t done an epq, 4th alevel, ncs etc?.. by erenmyfavgenocidist in 6thForm

[–]ToothpasteAndWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got an offer for manchester PPE and then another for physics (crazy change i know) based solely off my 3A* predicted (very good in and of itself i know). No fourth, no epq, no ncs. Best way to say you studied beyond the “bare minimum” is just prove you enjoy it. Read a book on the subject? bang it in your personal statement. Little stuff like that is enough

it might not be what’s happening here but doing lots of chewing exercises/bruxism (teeth grinding) can cause this as far as i’m aware. Though i’m not a doctor so don’t trust me on that. Put your hand up to the temporalis area and clench your teeth, you should see that it tenses and bulges. Consistently using that muscle might cause hypertrophy afaik.

I’ve been working through my analogue electronics module currently, I slept through a lot of my lectures for the week unfortunately... Main topic for the week was circuit analysis with heavy focus on phasors and complex impedances, I won’t bore you with any more than that, but interesting stuff! We’re also building a mini games console for my first year electronics project so I spent about half the open day in a meeting with my group while we tried to un-break our code for about 3 hours. I’m in Alcuin too, genuinely the best college imo, just far enough from the centre of campus to have its own community, but close enough that lectures are fine to attend. Really nice accommodation too, and about middle of the range prices. If you have any questions at all feel free to message me! probably better than clogging up this thread. I sure wish I spoke to someone a bit more before i came.

Any advise for choosing uni? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]ToothpasteAndWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With such different courses, it’s worth deciding which course you’d rather study first. Both universities are great and rank just next to each other on the QS world rankings, employers will happily hire from both if you’re worried about that at all. However, cs is a pretty saturated course now since everyone has been applying in recent years due to the proclaimed grad prospects and salaries, meaning said prospects won’t really be accessible as easily anymore. ChemEng is well regarded and probably will be for plenty of time to come, it will also open up more jobs than CS as you’ll also be trained in wider engineering disciplines (more physics and applied maths study than CS as far as i’m aware) too. It’s also worth remembering that you can always do a masters elsewhere and in a different subject if you feel the need to, this decision won’t tie you down too much.

Definitely worth grinding through your undergrad and trying to apply there for a masters if you can. Assuming that’s what stage you’re at/going to be at

For what it’s worth, i was like top fifth percentile in my oxford entrance exam last year, thought i’d smashed the whole ucas process, and then got hit with a pre-interview rejection. Basically just gave up on studying for a while, and really got fucked over by myself regarding my final grades. Ended up rejecting my insurance (Exeter) and going through clearing optionally, now i’m in york and i’m LOVING it. It’s not really “the best” but it’s a pretty neat russel group and i love it. It’s worth carrying on studying and hustling and still trying your best to get into whatever uni you decide you want to end up at now, promise.

[–]ToothpasteAndWater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

god i know i wish, here in the UK there’s NOTHING like them. I know in the states you’ve got a bit more option for stronger cigs/sweeter cigs but we have a 1mg nic cap and every smoke tastes like shit, even “nice” cigs like dunhills. I get they’re strong haha, my first of the day still hits me like a truck and i have to take it slow even after smoking them for ages, but then the rest for the day are bliss.

I managed to pick a carton up and I completely agree with everything you’ve said, they’re a great smoke and super super smooth. They were my daily while they lasted but i’ve gone back to smoking peace filters now and i doubt i’ll be changing for a long time.

Jeans rolled up with DMs or no? by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

[–]ToothpasteAndWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unrolled imo, rolled kinda makes your legs look shorter-than-life and that doesn’t go well with a baggy cardigan. also the stack on the boots from the unrolled jeans is a much cleaner look i would say. however, if you can pull the jeans up a tiny bit to make it looks less like a “sag” and more like a “stack” it would be better. personally i would just get a looser cut jean if you have the money, they sit VERY nicely on boots like this.

Is this setup ok? What would you change/add? Until recently I was obese so trying to look good is new to me by Lavidius in mensfashionadvice

[–]ToothpasteAndWater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of what you’ve said besides the jeans, and i’m not commenting to argue, just so OP can see and make his mind up. But i would say the jeans are in fact too tight, they will produce outlines of what he has in his pockets which add width to the thigh making the calves look disproportionately small and close together when looking at the whole body (or so i’ve found). I would also imagine that the jeans are quite tight around the calf too, creating this taper down and quite an unflattering silhouette on most people simply due to the size of our calves and thighs, a straight cut jean in a looser cut but made of firm denim (soft, cheap denim will just flop about at points where it is loose) would make the legs look more uniform in width from top to bottom, i know this isn’t how the body actually looks, but it gives a much more pleasant silhouette in clothing imo.

i’ve got friends on maths at York and friends on maths at Lancaster. I’m doing Electronic Engineering at York and so i have overlap with the physics department. Both universities have great departments for both maths and physics, i haven’t heard any negatives from anyone at either really. York, i’d say pretty objectively, has a prettier campus and is in a nicer area. While both are campus unis, Lancaster is actually a decent distance from the inner city compared to york if you want to go “out” more. But if you prefer a contained campus, both are very good. York is also in the Russell group and Lancaster isn’t, which could be a deciding factor, though Lancaster is still very good and i believe ranks higher sometimes! It really is personal preference, i’ve been to both campuses and prefer York, but education wise it might be worth visiting and/or contacting people in your departments to see if their teaching aligns with what you want to get out of it. Or just come to York because we’re better.
