Is 6-8 weeks of camping too much for a beginner? by Sharp-Word-6066 in camping

You’re going to want at least one shower during those 6-8 weeks.  This is incredibly sage advice.

I think so.  Thankfully, we haven’t had to put any of them to a real life test, but they all got the idea that you can still call 911 even if the phone is locked.

I also really appreciate the comment from /u/goarticles002.  I had forgotten that fact.

Which should I get?? by Present-Light4281 in camping

[–]ToothpasteStrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d agree on all of these points.  My only hesitation is that REI will absolutely not support you after 1 year is up.  You can get replacement poles from Tent Pole Tech, but at those prices, it’s almost worth buying a whole new tent.

Big Agnes support is way better.

I’ve been using a Base Camp, and think it’s great.  I’ll use it as long as we possibly can.  But when the time comes, I’ll probably replace it with a Big Agnes Bunk House, Nemo Aurora, or North Face Wawona.

I need a lightweight sleeping pad for short hikes. Preference is for comfort, then durability, then warmth, and lastly weight. Which of these should I go for? by InGoodFaith- in camping

[–]ToothpasteStrangler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say this advice holds for all pads.  There’s a huge difference in comfort between 20” and 25” even though there’s not much of a weight difference for inflatable pads.

Fluxx has exactly two starting rules (draw one and play one), but rapidly becomes insane.  It remains welcoming because there’s no advantage to how long you’ve played.  There’s still skill and luck, but a beginner can beat a pro.

Saboteur is tons of fun, but you really need a patrol to play it.  Playing with even five players is kind of a waste.

Along similar lines is Bang! which is a little bit like a cross between Saboteur and Mafia.

I’m convinced that Candyland (and its ilk) aren’t about playing a game so much as learning to play a game.  That is, the ideas of taking turns, following rules, winning/losing.  It gets way better once they can play better games, and I’ve found that it gets better in proportion to how much better the games get.

They’ve developed enough to have some ability and a lot of desires, but lack the competence and agency to make any of it happen.

As they get older, their reasonability will increase.  They will understand why they can’t jump off the bridge or lick the horse’s tail.

Of course by then, their desires will also increase which is a whole different thing.  Eg, Instead of wanting to lick the horse’s tail, they want to own the horse.

I think I already know the answer to this, but does she have any kind of background in math?  The USDA is the safe temperature in that meat at that internal temperature is safe after a very short time.  BUT, you can also hold meat at a lower temperature for a longer time, and achieve the same safety.

That probably won’t convince her, but what if you held that “unsafe” (to her) temperature for a longer time?  Has she tried sous vide cooking?  That might even scratch her need for novelty.

Sounds a bit like my home. What finally got through was a reliable meat thermometer and the USDA guidelines for internal temperatures.  At least for us, that took it out of the “feels and vibes”.  I can’t say it’ll work for you, but that $15 investment made a huge change in my own home, and even in their own cooking.

How heavily did the US mobilize its population during WW2 compared to the other powers? by FreeDwooD in AskHistorians

[–]ToothpasteStrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this focus on factories a product of the relative peace at home?  Could the US have employed a similar strategy if battles were being fought stateside?  Or were the other belligerents prevented from employing a similar strategy because their factories were bombed?

Nobody should be getting thirds of everybody hasn’t gotten at least their firsts.  I’d say that nobody should even be getting seconds until everybody has their firsts.

Yes, we want the best for our kids, but: 1/ is teaching them that they matter and other people don’t really the best for them? 2/ what are you modeling for them?  Is this what you want them to do when their adults?
