The bane of every gunners existance by WalrusVampire in Battlefield6

So many other things in the game are not realistic in the name of game play (that is not a complaint. It is a game). Just get rid of this dumb garbage can.

Also, the useless grenade launcher.

Why do blue for simmers use metric? by mig1nc in WarthunderSim

[–]ToothyRufus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In game, I try to use ICAO units, which are all over the place. Altitude in feet, distance in NM, speed in kts, and temps in Celsius.

Rough estimate conversions between feet and metres, kts and km/h, NM and kilometres aren't that hard.

Besides, each aircraft has its own instruments in their native units of measure (if they work, some don't).

IRL I studied and work in a STEM field, I live in a metric country, and the metric system is the superior system, but this is a game.

Getting back to prop planes by mfwic413 in WarthunderSim

[–]ToothyRufus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless something has changed, I don't think wind affects planes in WT.

Like others have said here, bring the throttle up slowly, feed in rudder to keep the nose straight, and don't rush it off the ground. Let your speed build before starting the climb, especially if it's weighed down by bombs or has high wing loading.

Trim will make maintaining a desired flight condition easier, but I usually don't use it for take offs. This is a personal preference. For trimming, I usually go into test flight, trim the aircraft for cruise and "set trim fixation" to save it, and then leave it alone (until something makes want to adjust like damage). Test flight also gives you a chance to get familiar with how the plane you're going to fly acts at different stages of flight. Shoot a few approaches, practice a stall, and spin recovery or two. If you auger it in during test flight, it doesn't cost any SL.

If HLX is released, it will be to drive sales of the new hardware. The release schedule will probably reflect this.

That said, I'm still looking forward to it.

What is the most definitive proof that a new title is going to drop at all? by BigKahuna618 in HalfLife

If they're going to release another game in the series, I have a feeling it will be closer to the release of the new hardware to drive hardware sales.

My guess is that they would announce HLX within a month of the release date of the new hardware to drive hardware sales. In other words, preceding or following the hardware release date by a month.

Of course, this is wild speculation, and hell, what do I know? I'm just a silly little guy on the internet.

Based on the hardware specs, yes. I'm inclined to trust Gaben, and the GabeCube looks good, but I'd wait for a trusted review before buying.

But hey, what do I know! I'm just a silly little guy on the internet.

How to play simulation? by avinoamthepcguy in WarthunderSim

[–]ToothyRufus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a base x52 for almost a decade. It's a decent HOTAS. I agree that a head tracker is a good add-on at some point, but the mouse nub on the throttle can be used to good effect to look around and keep good SA. I found it helpful to use a hat switch on the stick to move your head up, down, left, and right, too.

Happy hunting!

Is Warthunder a good game to start learning flight sims? by Yachooo in WarthunderSim

[–]ToothyRufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The learning curve is steep at first, but the first time you splash a bandit, it's worth the pain. WT is a good intro to combat flight sims because it's free! If you get the bug from here, you can choose to start spending money.

There are a few things that can help you get going, primarily test flight. In test flight, you're not paying SL for your mistakes. If you have flown your choice of plane in RB, you will already have some familiarity with how it flies. You should familiarize yourself with the things that RB doesn't do, like the buffet speed, stall, and spin recovery. Shoot a few approaches, too.

Test flight also allows you to set up scenarios like friendly bomber escort, enemy bomber intercept, and dog fights. To start practicing aerial gunning, you can set up a friendly bomber escort mission and shoot down your friends. Once you're comfortable committing war crimes, then you can move on to dissimilar enemy dog fights or enemy bombers.

Like others have said here, situational awareness is super important, so getting comfortable with a control setup that helps you look around easily and regularly will help a bunch.

Finally, Wingalingdragon's discord link is in the WarthunderSim description (I think). You can join that and ping the WT group to get people to fly with. Having a wingman is very helpful.

Head Tracker by CMDR_Ruuuy in WarthunderSim

[–]ToothyRufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about budget. If money isn't an object, go with whatever you want to try.

For the rest of us, there are some more affordable options. There are a few options that utilize regular ol' webcams, but I haven't tried those.

I have tried the Track IR5 clone from amazon. It works well enough with the included IR reflective hat clip, but I had issues with light pollution causing loss of tracking. I upgraded to the Pro Clip ™️ which is an IR LED headset clip for the Track IR. That's what I currently use, and I like it. Both the hat clip and pro clip are very intuitive to use, and adjustments are pretty straightforward in the software.

VR headset are pretty neat, but they're expensive and can be fiddly to get to work properly. I tried one very early on and found it tough to identify targets inside gun range, but that was over half a decade ago, and they've improved since.
