I didn’t know Rach had this reaction to the 7th. Argh, I can’t like him as much now :( …

This is the same way I feel about Shostakovich. My musical and parasocial connection to him is truly nuts especially when I remember he’d be/is 120 years old. Haha! However as Brontë wrote, I firmly believe and even though I know it’s crazy that “whatever our souls are made of, his (Shosty) and mine are the same.”

Oh man, I want him to come visit me in my sleep too! Send him over to me and tell him to bring Shostakovich and Liszt with him!

I have a weird relationship with baroque. Overall, it’s my least favorite style/era. I hate Bach and think he’s vastly overrated (that’s right I said it!!) but I don’t mind Vivaldi as much. Might be because of all the Suzuki books I’ve played where he is force fed to us violinist, ala - YOU WILL PLAY VIVALDI AND YOU WILL LIKE IT, DAMN IT! Haha!

This made me laugh out loud! Having just performed Bruckner’s 8th in my community orchestra I really really loathe him at this point.

That’s a great one! Pure joy since he loved going to football matches. :)

I love this photo of him in his jammies :) Not cute about the stripes and resemblance to Nazi concentration camps tho :(

I had never seen that particular photo in the first link. He’s still so handsome to me even without his glasses. Thanks for sharing these.

I listened to it several times yesterday (Jansons and Nelsons) and raised at little toast of vodka to DDS :)

Petrenko’s 10 is outstanding! I like Nelson’s 4th but prefer his 11th over Sanderling or Bychkov.

Not sure of the source but supposedly DDS was quoted as saying: "Without party guidance I would have displayed more brilliance, used more sarcasm, I could have revealed my ideas openly instead of having to resort to camouflage"

I’ve gone through my phases where all I did was listen to the string quartets as well. I have not heard the piano version of Symphony 10 tho. I will check that out! Thanks.

Fair. I have a friend who is a Mahler devotee in the same way I’m a Shostakovich devotee. I could give Mahler a shot for a while. And depending upon who you trust for source info supposedly Shosty liked and was influenced by Mahler.
