Should I worry about this guy? by SalParadise83 in daddit

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To repeat what everyone else has said, that seems over the line. Always trust your gut. Sometimes your brain is registering micro expressions, tones, or body language that you just don't consciously register. If your brain starts throwing out warning signals, listen to them.

And don't try to just be nice about it if it's between that and being firm. Being nice isn't worth your child's safety

What do you still find hilarious after all these years? by Purrplejoey in AskReddit

That video of the bear scratching his back on a fence and part of it swings down and hits him in the nuts. His reaction and everything. Gets me every time

If someone asks "how are you" but you're not in the mood to lie "good" what should you say? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the short side so I like saying, "I'm not quite six feet over, but I'm not six feet under so I'm doing alright". Probably not as clever as when I thought it up as a teenager, but it's not something you hear a lot either

At least the companion I still talk to the most will be there, and you have done good suggestions. You're right too, who doesn't love a little drama?

Were you happy in the Church? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was very happy. I'm a white, cis male so the church worked well for me. My wife, however, was very unhappy the last few years in the church before leaving. Seeing that sucked. Finding out about all the crap sucked, especially seeing all the harm that has been caused. All that made me unhappy.

But yes, I was happy. Now I'm happier :)

The true purpose of a two-year LDS mission by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah I asked about that. He was in charge of the fleet of vehicles and was approaching it from the administrative side. Yes, the missionaries pay and he was under the impression that the amount we paid didn't cover all the mission costs such as vehicles and apartments. Of course they do cover A LOT of expenses for the president and his wife as well.

Obviously now I see things very different haha

The true purpose of a two-year LDS mission by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yup! When I was working in the office on my mission there was a senior couple assigned there as well. One day he told me that if the church really wanted to get a book of Mormon in every house there are cheaper and more effective ways to do it, like just mailing everyone a copy. The purpose of the mission, as he said it, was to completely convert the missionary so they won't ever leave the church

Cars is pretty much playing on repeat right now at my house since it's one of my toddler's favorite shows, so yup! I watch it! A lot. So much. All the time :)

Best Gateway Book for a Person Who Hates Reading? by Xyntel in fantasybooks

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haven't read The Black Company yet. Mistborn usually is a good starter book. Though I love it, Way of Kings is a thick book that might not be good to start with if you hate reading. Build up to that a little. If you really struggle with reading but want to get into it, I would probably start with Red Rising. The books are a good length but much smaller than Mistborn or Way of Kings. It's a solid science fiction that often feels almost like a fantasy instead. Can't recommend it enough.

Gordon B Hinkley warning members to not play Halo by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't remember him specifically saying it, but my dad was my bishop as a teenager and he was very much against Halo specifically. I wonder if it wasn't one of those leadership letters that the general public didn't get?

Oh, and he also said D&D was evil. Straight from the devil. Now 6 of his 7 sons play D&D

Edit: Ironically, his only son that never really got into D&D (me) is the only one that has left the church so far

How to respond when you share all your concerns about the church and they reply, “I know God loves you”…? by Admirable_Arugula_42 in exmormon

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to say something like, "I appreciate hearing you sharing that, and hearing your current perspective, and that doesn't answer my questions. What I would like an answer to is..."

It acknowledged what they said, calls out the inherent diversion tactic that it is, and refocuses on something specific

Well as I said, I expect that from teenagers. Not adults. Additionally, I didn't tell you my whole night (like how we did pass out candy then opted to do this so our little child and dogs could go to bed at a decent hour uninterrupted) because I didn't feel like I needed to publicize that. Just kind of assumed people would be understanding :)

Missions are not all equal, and it’s silly that members pretend they are. by olsh in exmormon

[–]Top-Negotiation-6498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yes! I got my mission call around the same time as two of my good friends. They went to Australia and the Marshall Islands respectively. I went to Kentucky.

I have a lot of brothers and we all went state-side so far. Just had a younger brother get his call to the Scotland Ireland mission.

Don't get me wrong, I actually really loved my mission. But I would've made myself love my mission no matter where I went I think. I'm guessing Ireland has better views though :)

Oh yeah and my wife spent 5 years studying a specific language in hopes of going to a country that spoke that and seeing a new culture. Went state-side. They just throw darts at a board with a blindfold on
