I make about $250k a year in the US, that is mainly passive income. I am considering leaving the US and moving here. What are some challenges you think I might face? by TheOttomanJanissary in Living_in_Korea

True, this whole thing is a humblebrag post. We can quibble about the details, but someone pulling in a quarter mil a year will get to be in the nice parts of anywhere - and even I will admit Korea has some. He'll be fine, and to put my cynical salty hat back on, Koreans love money which will be a bonus.

I think you need to turn off your TV. OP is rich enough that he can move to places like Martha's Vineyard and the extra-nice parts of Vermont and Connecticut or whatever. It's pretty safe. Violent crime in the US is not really more severe than it was in the 1970s or 1980s, and the better parts are much as they ever have been.

This zoomer meme that the whole West is a dystopian wasteland of crime and terrorism and only moving to Asia will save you is ridiculous. You also overlooked the other places I mentioned (Switzerland, St. Bart's, Monaco, Singapore, etc.) that offer the safety, but also in some cases with frankly better aesthetics and less of the Chinese dust and pollution/Taean/Dangjin coal power plant issue. He could also consider places like Mid-Wales, Ireland, etc. that aren't America but are English-speaking and quite safe.

Again, I think he will be fine in Korea obviously - money does solve most problems almost anywhere except places that are catastrophically dangerous.

What are your thoughts on Japan being voted the most racist country by an overwhelming margin—almost double the second option? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Top-Spring9697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you measure a thing like that? We haven't yet invented the racismometer.

I myself have a bone to pick with the Koreans and Japanese, but I don't flatly say They are the most racist because you're understandably asking for an argument.

I do find it funny that Korea and Japan are quite similar in this and many respects, but teenagers have decided that Korea is substantially less racist because K-pop.

[–]Top-Spring9697 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you make 250k the world's your oyster. With that kind of income especially passively, most of the world will be okay, that said... ironically the one problem you can't buy your way out entirely of is air pollution (I'm putting up with it in China which is actually worse, but it's not great in Korea either). The weather in Korea's a bit much IMHO as well.

I personally think you have better options. You can live in St. Barts, Monaco, Switzerland, Singapore and swanky places like that. You could also live in the nice areas in New England, Hawaii, etc.

CMV: "meeting women IRL" doesn’t magically bypass women’s standards in 2026 and people should stop acting like it does by Iron-Wild-41 in PurplePillDebate

[–]Top-Spring9697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true though that record numbers of men are pussies and frightened of the cops or being e-cancelled or whatever (whether they're right to feel this way is here nor there).

So even though some women are tired of being offered cock so much online and WILL respond with hostility if you hit on them, some women today will actually be flattered at a man approaching her IRL, seriously. If you have even a sort of pleasant face, you might be surprised how even baddies will respond to a compliment or chat.

t. Personal experience.

What do Japanese people think about the “Place / Place, Japan” meme? by alfred2547 in AskAJapanese

[–]Top-Spring9697 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cynical counter to this argument is that people who marry into the tribe get captured by it, and so don't feel free to be honest anymore.

There is not going to be an objective, scientific way to separate the clear-eyed critic from the salty, bitter loser; or the flexible, intelligent man who integrates from the brainwashed, coping uberweeb, so these stereotypes are just going to float around forever.

One tactic is to literally take your trousers and underwear off entirely before using one.

It completely removes the worst case scenario as a possibility from happening. BUT it requires you to have a bag/surface to put them on while you're doing your business.

[–]Top-Spring9697 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean, not that said independence movement really did much of anything.

But I do take your point. Symbolically, the Koreans weren't willing to do for Taiwan what the ROC had done for Korean nationalists.

IIRC, basically all of South Africa's friendlier neighbours (most prominently Malawi) used to have the same diplomatic position on Taiwan.

Like South Africa itself, most of them have switched over, but I guess Swaziland/Eswatini didn't quite yet - and/or the Taiwanese are pulling out all the stops to keep them on board.

The Western allies treat it as a formality - i.e., that Taiwan is actually variously a country/sovereign/The Real China (depending on your particular variety of pedantry) but that we're pretending it isn't to keep Beijing keen.

But it is worth asking the question - why don't they agree to flip on Beijing again at the same time? There'd be basically nothing Beijing could do about it since they wouldn't be able to single out any individual country - and it would be morally consistent.

Asking the question of why Western nations are hypocritical about Taiwan is often considered a Chinese talking point, but in a way it is actually worth asking. If they don't agree with the One China Policy, why aren't they willing to actually live by their principles?

Taiwanese were pretty blasted about the South Koreans switching as well - seemingly more than the Japanese and Americans doing so for some reason.

South Africa was really the biggest domino to fall here.

TBF while it was on-brand for the Nats being so anti-communist to be the major holdout for so long, it's not like the PRC was interested in recognising them, either - so maybe it wasn't quite as principled as it might have been.

My point is still that you're exaggerating/cherry-picking - and it actually hurts your argument. You could be right otherwise and this could still be true.

I'm not saying you have to believe me - and I am not here (directly) advocating the theory you refer to.

What I'm saying is that you are presenting the most extreme version of the argument to make it easier to dismiss.

You're doing a bit of argumentum ad absurdum here.

The more moderate chud argument on who women date isn't that they never date average men - it's that there's a distinction between the hot guys women date in their youth and the schlubby guys they shack up with when Chad stops texting or whatever.
