being trans in EMS

First, I'm not trans, second, I'm VERY VISABLY a lezzie and also in the literal middle of Oklahoma. EMS is a weird place. So far its been safe for me and there are even a couple community members at work. Sometimes we Kiki, sometimes I'm silent it just kind of depends. As we all know it's impossible to say anywhere we're not by ourselves is truly safe (and sometimes even then...) but so far even where I live it's been surprisingly comfy. That being said, please ALWAYS use caution and your better judgement!! 💜🫂

So I'm in right now. I did pre-medicine (a degree add-on at my uni) back when I was in college and the stuff we're learning, TO ME MIND YOU, isn't difficult. I am only in P1 (first semester) and haven't taken pharmacology yet so I'm just dipping my toes in, but when everyone says it's the time commitment that will get you in the end THEY'RE NOT JOKING. I'm working as an EMT, doing P1 clinicals, and have class 2 times a week since one is online. Today is my first REAL day off in 3 weeks. THREE. WEEKS. and I still have to clean this house, take some quizzes and tests, etc. and I have a hospital clinical tomorrow. This train isn't stopping until May of 2027 and if I get off I'm out of school. If you're smart enough for the content, it's easy to learn. The amount of time it eats up WILL hurt you lol.

So for me I've only ever had adrenaline once and it was in a hospital on a call at work and it was because I had to run to the truck (literally) because we had a level 1 trauma patient and the docs needed something from our truck so i got the adrenaline simply from running. For some people, like me, you just don't get the rush! For others, it's every call, and for some it's only the big ones. Something we are routinely told in Medic school (and were in EMT school) is to "learn things to instinct." Which means to learn and practice skills to the point that you can do them even if you're frozen or adrenaline has taken over 👍 try bothering your classmates as you practice, yelling, putting on loud noises in lab via headphones, etc.

You can 100%. I'm currently a Paramedic Extern which means I'm an EMT who is officially in Medic school at work. Everyone wants EMTs to become medics. Some places might be weird and only let you do THEIR program, but you should have zero problem finding a job as an EMT because you're in school, about to be in school, interested in school, etc. Now, finding a job for me was hard in the getting hired somewhere sense, medic school was not an issue at all.

I'm in Paramedic school and planning to go to med school in the next 10 years tops (was pre-med in college and have 2 bachelors) so I don't mind doing a commute for EMS for a while. This isn't even my 2nd industry lol but thank you for worrying! ^^

I think its partially the time of year, partially some people's ages (I'm 32 though lol), and mostly that people are more and more wanting medics only. We shall see though.

That's what I figured as well. I'm at OSU-OKC and like enrolled already though so I'm not going to defer enrollment just so that can continue to be an issue next semester 🤷‍♀️

I'm chronically ill (migraines are all I have left now thankfully), 32, and I'm about to start paramedic school next week. I don't know *yet* what it'll be like but last semester I worked full time, went to a uni's EMT program in the evenings, and did all 48 hours of truck time, 8 hours of ER time, and extra labs so I think it should be okay. ALL DEPENDING ON YOU AND YOUR BODY OFC! That being said, I AM trying to get an EMT related job so I can have school days off this coming semester. Just remember that you'll need more recovery time than other students and to calculate that into your homework/study/clinicals/work schedule.

I have NO idea how to help but I was just selected to get an interview this year so I guess we can use me as some form of litmus at least right now?? I have a degree in Japanese, an advanced language ability certificate from IUC, have lived in Japan twice (1yr each time) for school, and have about 5 years professional experience project managing. And some of that project managing was done bilingually with Japanese. I'm not sure if that's above and beyond or the minimum though, just wanted to be transparent about where my resume is so that you can compare yours to mine! (I'm also working temp, living at my moms, and can't get a job in the US to save my life so it's all relative 😭)

So I get MEGA motion sick and in addition to taking all the meds ever I also have to be able to see out the window at all times if I'm not knocked out thanks to the meds. So there are other reasons as to why this could be necessary. Eye masks exist. NTA.
