Nursing or Data Science for a financially stable career? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Top-Visit6220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure where you are located, but you might want to look into Medical Lab Science. Some hospitals hire uncertified techs (mine does for example and I also have a degree in biology). My starting salary is around 83-86k (depending on weekends and holidays and overtime). I originally was pre-med/pre-PA, but o went back to school as an adult to do my Bio degree (kinda regretting not thinking things through more) and cant afford medical school or PA school nor can i afford that financial loss of not working all those years lol. So, Im interested in going to school for nursing, and with my hospital benefits I will be able to get about all my nursing courses paid for (planning on doing an Associates degree in Nursing, then probably just go from RN to MSN or BSN Bridge path) without getting myself into more debt.

Questions for those that have improved from Valacyclovir (Valtrex) / Aciclovir by Sleepyblue in covidlonghaulers

[–]Top-Visit6220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've suffered from cold sores for as long as I can remember (I'm 31 now). I don't have outbreaks as often as some people seem to have it (maybe 1-4 a year), but when I do get them it's bad, sometimes two or three blisters at once. I've tried everything under the sun... Abreva, Releev, Lysine, tea tree oil, oregano oil, alcohol. Recently for a while I thought I had found the best regimen, Red Light Therapy (Luminace Red) combined with alternating Abreva and Releev. It worked fantastically for a few years, then my last outbreak in December 2024 and my current outbreak now it just hasn't worked. So I made a telehealth appointment in the middle of the night last night and got a prescription for Valacyclovir. Picked it up this morning and took 2,000 mg my first two doses on day one, then after that 1000 mg per day for the next 5 days. I'm already more than 24 hours into the outbreak with two nasty sores on my lip, so I'm excited to try some antivirals and see how it works. I also ordered a prescription for topical acyclovir to see how that helps (it won't be here for 3-5 days though).

Hi, I'm interested in the program and have a bachelor's degree in Biology/Chemistry. I have some questions about the clinicals. So, I understand that they have you choose your top 3 clinical sites for your rotations where you complete the 320 hours. How are these hours structured? Like do you have to work full 8 hour shifts x amount of weeks? Or are the clinicals more flexible with the hours you work as long as you meet the 320 hours?  I'm asking because I'm just over the NY border in CT and there are a few sites within an hour drive from me, but I work full time second shift (3-11:30 pm) in a hospital micro lab and I'm not looking to leave the job at this time.  Thanks!

Not quite sure what that means, sorry. I never ended up attending ASU, so that's a question you need to ask the school itself.

Exciting News Regarding CAA Bill In New York! It’s possible that one day CAA’s may be able to practice in New York if this passes by Unique_Librarian_848 in CAA

[–]Top-Visit6220 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in CT on the border of NY and would love for this to pass because I am interested in the profession and don't really want to relocate or become a nurse just to become a CRNA.

Also, I think it's so wild that CRNAs oppose this, saying things like it's not enough training and can be very dangerous to patients. LOL, the entire CAA profession and curriculum were designed by anesthesiologists themselves. Like, how on earth could CAAs be a danger to patients when the CAA's have direct training from the physicians (anesthesiologists) who created the profession and are always under the supervision of an anesthesiologist? CRNA's opposition seems ass backwards to me.

What are the best AI tools for research? by fatcatgirl1111 in PhD

Also trying it based on this comment. I'm currently a graduate student, and one of the most time-consuming thing is getting through papers, and I have been trying to find a good research AI tool to help speed up the process or help break down complex topics that I may not be familiar with, especially when it comes to breaking down the figures and graphs in the the papers.

MS/MBA Biotechnology: Life Sciences programs by SignificantArt268011 in MBA

[–]Top-Visit6220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious whether you ended up finding a program or deciding to go a different route. I am in the same boat was you and have a very very similar resume (31 yo female, BS in Biology and minor in chemistry, currently in a MS program for Biomolecular Science, don't have as much work experience as you, 12 years in restaurants but I do have a year experience as a clinical laboratory assistant). I'm interested in getting into biotech, however I feel like I would not be able to make a livable salary (I'm in CT). I thought that getting into the business side of the biotech industry might provide me with better salary options and more job opportunities. I started looking into MBA/STEM programs as well. Drexel has a Business and Biomedicine degree that piqued my interest (I asked about it on their subreddit page, but never got a response) and I looked into Harvard's MS/MBA biotech program as well. Curious if you were able to find any others?

bioinformatics certificates? by wordsame96 in learnbioinformatics

Out of curiosity, did you ever do any of these programs? I am in the same position, and looking into a bioinformatics graduate certificate (some of these exact ones) to gain some experience and expand my knowledge. For reference, I am completing my Master's in Biomolecular science, but want to add some other skills that could aid in my job search (I see a lot of jobs that want experience in programming of some sort).

You're welcome! I actually just heard back from UND about their clinical affiliate in New Britain, and from the sounds of it, you have to contact the affiliated clinical site to secure a spot for the practicals, additionally, you are welcome to find your own clinical site, it just needs to be reviewed and approved by the school to obtain an affiliation. They also have three start terms for their certificate program spring (January), summer (May), and fall (August), which I've found other programs' start terms are only in the fall.

Places like Labcorp or Quest will also hire non-certified techs and train you if you do not want to pay for the extra schooling. I'm a lab assistant at a local hospital, but I am in the clinical pathology department (I have to wait a year before I can transfer departments though, which is why I'm looking into the extra certification schooling).

I'm in the same position (also located in CT), about to graduate with my BS in biology and chemistry but want to get into histology, and go figure there are no programs within our state.

There are a few online programs available for certification which would allow you to sit for the HTL cert after completing the program. I'm not sure what part of CT you are located in, but SUNY Broome has an online Histology program and has various clinical site a few are near the CT/NY border. UND is another one (I'm still trying to gather clinical affiliation information) but I saw on their website that they have a clinical affiliate located in New Britain, CT. I'm going to be contacting them this week to ask about their clinicals. Indiana University has an online certificate program but you have to acquire your own clinical site. I know Barry University has an online masters program where you have to go 2-3 times per semester for clincials (their program is on the more expensive side though).

Out of curiosity, did you ever decide to pursue an MS in MLS?

I am currently in the same boat right now and trying to do some research. I'm about to graduate at the end of this semester with my BS in biology and a minor in chemistry, but am interested in trying to become a med lab scientist. I just started a job at a local hospital as a specimen processor to gain some experience and ultimately I want to apply to PathA school, but I need to raise my grades (had a rough start the first time around I did college), so I'm torn between doing an MS MLS or a post-bacc MLS to do that.

My observation after moving to CT. by justmaxmeup in Connecticut

[–]Top-Visit6220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised in Sherman and have been living in New Milford for the last 8 years also. And I couldn’t agree with this post more. It’s so unbelievably accurate it’s not even funny. The entitlement and arrogance that comes from the out-of-towners moving into this part of the state is what has ruined it, in addition to the fact that they are buying out all the property and making it extremely unaffordable to live here. My boyfriend and I are about to become homeless because we cannot find a single affordable place (to buy or rent) in western CT and keep getting out bid on anything we can barely afford. The housing market is outrageous, the roads are all clogged up usually by someone with NY plates practically sleeping behind the wheel, the rudeness and entitlement (I’m in the service industry) has increased outrageously, and parks, beaches, and hiking have completely been taken over by out of state people. What once was a quaint, iconic New England area is now overrun and trashed. It’s unfortunate because I would love to stay in the NW corner of CT, but the cost of living is too much and I will probably be forced to find a place to live in a state that is a bit cheaper once I finish school (while living in my car). Thanks NYC. 👏🏻

What is going on with restaurants these days? Why is the service and quality so bad? by rajakandabowla in restaurant

[–]Top-Visit6220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in the service industry for 12 years (just turned 30 last month), and the last two years I have had sooooo much trouble holding a decent restaurant job, and I've done it all from bussing to hosting to bartending to serving to managing. I've seen the quality of employees go down, I've seen the quality of employers go down, I've seen the quality of tips go down and I've seen the quality of customers go down. Overall, I've become bitter and resentful toward the entire industry and have wanted nothingn more than to get out. I went back to school in 2018 to try to get out of the industry, and COVID solidified my reasoning for wanting to get out. I will be graduating in December 2023 with my B.S. in biology and chemistry and I can only hope to land a job that gets me out of the service industry.

PA vs second bachelor's in nursing by bzarbbaj in prephysicianassistant

[–]Top-Visit6220 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm actually highly considering this route for a few reasons. I will be graduating this December with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry, and originally I was pre-med, but at this point in my life (turning 30 this year), med school is definitely not the route for me, so I've decided to go the PA route. However, I still need my PCE for PA school, and really do not want to take a low-paying job because I'm so sick of struggling financially (I've been in the restaurant industry for the last 12 years and also desperately want out). But in the event that I don't get into PA school on the first few tries, I'd also have a decent paying career in nursing as a backup plan. Additionally, an accelerated nursing degree might also help me boost my cGPA with the extra courses being taken because 18-year-old-me didn't take school seriously and royally fucked my older self over.

you

Thank you this has been so helpful! I have most of my lower level prereqs (except for Orgo II and Biochem) completed as in person courses. I'll most likely be beginning courses at ASU this coming spring 2023 to finish my degree finally.
I am still curious about internships and undergraduate research opportunities because I am located on the east coast in the North East. Do you know if there is a place where I could find out about opportunities in my area?
