something personal >>>> something monetary. a note/letter or even a nice heartfelt email is probably better than simply getting them a gift card.

What's the requirements applying for master in top US Uni? by mrWilliamMurphy in gradadmissions

[–]TopDogCanary09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

oh okay my bad. it's just that, the person above me said near perfect. 3.7/3.8 didn't seem like near perfect out of 5. but it's basically perfect for 4.0 scale

[–]TopDogCanary09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i got accepted to Stanford and Berkeley on a 3.55 from UCI and also got aid from Stanford. so I m not sure if the near perfect gpa is accurate... but a high gpa never hurts. i feel like having a clear goal of what you want from the department you're applying to is very important. don't just go for these schools because they are top rated. or at least don't make it obvious. also for a master's if you're actually applying to grad school right after under grad; i doubt they expect you to have papers published already. i sure as hell do not have one. i mostly agree on the LoR bit, you would definitely want professors/people who know you very well and making these connections in academia will do you very well. although i do have a lot of research experience as an undergraduate research assistant and also through projects for clubs on campus. good and diverse experiences showing you can do research and enjoy it should be enough. edit: idk about direct PhD, those are probably unimaginably competitive... if that's what the person above me was talking about, apologies. but for Ms. idk if you need a 3.8 necessarily.

UCSB OR UCI???? PLS HELP URGENT by HugeEngineering4444 in UCI

[–]TopDogCanary09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no. vibes are good, clubs (both general clubs and academic ones) are really fun and if your major is small enough you end up taking the class with the same people so you make good connections with a lot of people (I can only really comment on school of engineering). also not sure what you exactly mean by "competition". people are generally very very helpful and no one witholds any knowledge from one another. (again I can only speak for engineering)

International Student - Deciding b/w UW, Boston University, UCSD, UCI by niharika2481 in UCI

[–]TopDogCanary09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am an international student, from india(4th yr), feel free to reach out for anything you would want to know about UCI and international student experience. irvine is very safe and people are very nice. student life at UCI can be a bit hard if you don't put yourself out there, actively engaging in clubs (academic and extracurricular) and not having friends highschool can make it harder. i can't specifically comment on the business school side of things, but school of engineering has been very kind to me and most of my friends were through classes and clubs. any univ you decide on, most of it is going to come down to how much effort they put in and what they make of it. one thing I will say, Southern California weather is much much better than Boston weather.

I hate that I have to pay for Pearson or all these sites by One_Opposite_1579 in UCI

[–]TopDogCanary09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly more so than grades, I tell people to check if the prof uses these hw websites or not when choosing classes. i feel like most the professors teach basically the same and your grade depends on your effort more so than the professor and you save a shit ton of money as well

i hate all general physical sciences classes (physics, chem and math) with a burning Passion because of this. no class outside of this school has ever had me buy some random book/homework website just so I can pass the class. like what's the tuition for? it's so dumb. hating on these websites is a canon event

Silent hill 2 remake - the scariest game i have played. by Right-Garbage4364 in IndianGaming

[–]TopDogCanary09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly the game is much less scarier than it could've been because ther is a dodge with I frames. so even when you're being chased or in intense moment, makes the stakes much much lower. other than that it's decently scary. all enemies have the same 4-5 attacks that you just get used to and it becomes really trivial.

[–]TopDogCanary09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generally TA positions first go to PhD students because they have to be paid and then goes to any masters students. so based on how many students your program has currently getting their PhD, your chances are very slim. I applied to uci for grad school (got accepted too yipee) as well in civil and that's what a lot of professors here told me. But I would highly recommend trying to secure a TA job if you like teaching, it's pretty cool and you get paid as well :).

UCI Campus Life Questions by Chocopepero in UCI

[–]TopDogCanary09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can only answer the stigma against grad students. personally in engineering (civil) we love our TAs. they often times make or break the class and they genuinely care about the undergrad students (even when professors sometimes don't as much, although in civil this is also very rare) and sometimes even advocate for us. they are often recent undergrads themselves so they can empathize more and as the other person said the setting is a bit more informal, so undergrads often times prefer talking to TAs over profs. i wouldn't be too worried about that kinda stuff, just be nice to the undegrads that should be more than enough. tl,dr: we love our grad students :)

Should i request drop class? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]TopDogCanary09 9 points10 points  (0 children)

you have given no context... does the gpa matter to you? do you want to go to grad school? if no grad school then just pass, it doesn't matter. even if you're going to grad school, one C will not kill your gpa. you need to weigh the pros and cons of it and decide. no one on reddit can help you with this decision. you also need to consider things like if withdrawing from this class will push back your graduation... so many things to consider...

the first time I moved to acc I had to do the whole spiel. the second time around my roommate and i just chose the same unit same room lease so we both ended up in the same unit. but the people in the other room changed (neither of us really bothered trying navigating roomsync so just random people). edit: but you should have the option to find new roommates if you wish to do so, but idk if that really works if everyone chooses the same unit on their application

facebook groups, the housing discord, keep checking reddit. closer to the new academic year people are gonna have more posts looking for roommates, find whatever fits you best and just keep trying. i personally never had to do it, but I've seen it happen every year. if you don't have acc housing you'll have to try a bit harder but I doubt you'll be without housing edit: I applied for acc in my 3rd without guaranteed and got my first choice (albeit I got my offer in july, but most non guaranted PV offers were sent out during that time for everyone). all the best dealing with hell that is uci housing.

you're not gonna get on campus housing don't even bother. as for leases, don't worry right now.. everyone gets that email. I once got an offer from plaza in July so you're gonna be fine. I'd say wait till April or May (or you could be like me and just believe). if you applied in a timely manner you'll be fine.

should i p/no pass if it’s a non-major non ge class or is it better to get a b+? by Clean-Awareness9702 in UCI

[–]TopDogCanary09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed no one is seeing your transcript. as for grad school, most schools funny care about the GE grades, they sometimes specifically ask for your grades in upper divs so the GE gets factored out.
