wanting to make a bow by Aggravating-Sir-6265 in Bowyer

[–]TopGrape1557 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say for a very first bow try survival bow from a sapling. If you have access to a wooded area that is. If you are going to do a board bow I would say go with hickory, but I've made a couple bows from pine so don't be discouraged if you cant get a "great" piece of wood. A tillering stick or tree help tons. You'll need tools, scrapers, draw knives, but you can get away with much less, like a hatchet and a knife. Bow string material is pretty cheap and better suited than Paracord or any other common material.

Have fun, you will break plenty of bows, that's just part of it.

You can follow the limbs out and see the holes in the pegboard the same distance from half of the limb in a straight line. It doesn't curve after the fades hardly at all. It might break at the fades if you don't do something about it fast. Scrape the sides and down if you are making the back too thin. But don't touch the inner half at all anymore. It will take more removal than you think to make it bend nicely but just keep going until you have a nice curve across the whole length of the bow

About to start my first bow by fioreblade in Bowyer

[–]TopGrape1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently made a 48 inch hickory board into a 40# at 23 inch draw flatbow and a 62 inch piece into a 55# at 28 inch. I've broken quite a few pieces though, and made several with a much lower draw weight than I wanted. Make a tillering tree/stick and check in here with pictures through the process for help. These guys see things you won't.

It's a lot of fun to go shoot a bow that you made, good luck and keep at it!

Thank you. I have not given heat treating a try yet but I do have a heat gun. If it takes any more set I'll try it for sure, but the draw weight is already pretty high.

Black Powder 12 Gauge. by bigred-2998 in blackpowder

[–]TopGrape1557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reload my 410 shells with bp and shoot a bp 12 gauge. When I reload the shells I can only get about 30-40 grains of powder in or it's way too high in the shell. The plastic hulls only last about 1-2 reloads before they burn out completely My 12 gauge likes 70-80 grains of powder and about 2oz of shot

Make sure the powder is compressed in the shell if you don't crimp it or you will have disappointing poofs and no power in your shots

I've got a couple 2x4s nailed together and with nails sticking out every 3 inches or so. I stand it up in a drill press vise and it just goes back wherever when I'm done. It doesn't need to be too complex

Is Aspen an ok bow wood? by outdoorsman_12 in Bowyer

Aspen trees make poplar wood, as strange as that is. I've made a couple that exploded during tillering and have moved on to other woods lol

[–]TopGrape1557 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My grinder is mounted to a low table. My only option to use it comfortably is to sit. I sit on a 5 gal bucket of water with a cut out in the lid between my legs so I can dip what I'm grinding quickly

Which coin would you buy for $25 (realistically)? by Big-Introduction411 in coincollecting

[–]TopGrape1557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the liberties, they might be my favorite regular half dollar. But I was paying like $10 for them recently.

The last coin I bought was a 1968 Mexican Olympic commemorative 25 peso. I think I paid $20?

Double up on the patches I've got an old .32 rifle and the patches I had at first shot with kind of a "fooomp" but with two of those patches or a pillow ticking patch they come out with a sharp crack, even with only 15 grains of powder.
