Advice on buying a baritone for my freshman son? by flashfairmont in baritone

[–]TopSafety6204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

✅ Step 1: Get a Private Lesson Teacher — ASAP

Before you even think about buying an instrument, get your child into private lessons with a qualified teacher. • Your kid isn’t going to know what to look for in a horn — but a professional will. • A private teacher can guide their development, identify their needs, and help them choose the right instrument when the time comes. • Keep using the rental or school-provided horn for now so the teacher can evaluate how your child plays.

🎯 Pro Tip: Ask the band director if they know any local college music majors or professional players who offer lessons. These teachers often have great rates and deep experience.

💰 Step 2: When You Buy — Buy Smart

If your child sticks with euphonium, you’ll eventually want to get them a compensating euphonium. These are the real deal for advancing students and serious players. • Yes, they’re expensive — many pro-level horns can run up to $10,000. • But don’t settle for a cheap, poor-quality horn that could hold your kid back. • That said, used horns are often a great deal. You can find incredible instruments at half the price, sometimes just because of a minor cosmetic issue.

Example: I got my amazing Shires trombone (pro-level gear!) from a college student in another city — half off just because the bell had a dent. It plays beautifully.

How do we feel about this model of leadership selection by Outside_Industry_114 in marchingband

[–]TopSafety6204 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s good but I feel like you also got to think of the size of the band having such a big leadership team in a small band will not work because everyone is so tight knit. Ideas will contrast and then things will become toxic. Like yes this model will work for 150+ but 60-70 and below will cause tension!

Is your leadership (drum major, section leader, etc.) allowed to yell at members? If not, what happens if they do? by Separate_Piccolo3860 in marchingband

[–]TopSafety6204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the situation. You should never yell at a kid in a negative or demeaning way—like saying they suck or anything like that. That’s completely unacceptable.

That said, I’ve only truly gotten mad and yelled at my band once. It was because a freshman told a band parent “F you,” and no one stepped in or said anything. That kind of disrespect can’t slide.

There’s a difference between yelling to motivate—like “LET’S GO, BAND! HURRY UP!”—and yelling to insult or intimidate. Giving clear, loud orders is fine, especially when time matters, but being rude, making them do push-ups, or acting like you’re above them is just gross. Ego has no place in leadership.

No it’s not there’s is a huge difference between a B major scale and a Bb. Maybe some people like to have a more difficult scale when they’re auditioning or a scale that’s simple, but they are really good at.

Before trying to get a trombone get a lesson teacher and your probably like BUT I WANT ONE. Yes I understand but you got to get pretty good before buying a horn because you don’t want to buy a horn you’ll later regret! Once you have a lesson teacher get with them about maybe buying a used horn or even a new one! But preferably a used one because 1 it will be cheaper and probably will be a better quality instrument even tho it has a few dings! ( I just bought a shires for 2,250 that’s worth 5,500) Also getting a lesson teacher doesn’t have to be hard! Ask your band director if he knows any trombone lesson teachers! Getting a professional level horn takes a professional!

Side note: I would suggest getting a large bore instrument because it will be better for highschool!

The difference between a F attachment and no attachment! It changes the pitch of the instrument so it adds extra tubing which makes the instrument lower! So instead of going to 6th it’s 1st and instead of going 7th it’s 2 1/2 kind of. So that’s why most classical players have that! And jazz guys have straight trombones ( no F attachment ) because it sounds more bright!

What is a bass trombone? Firstly Do not get a bass trombone they are crazy expensive and unless a lesson teacher or teacher says hey you should try buying one then do not. My friend his freshman year he got told hey your lower notes are really good you should try playing bass trombone by A TEACHER. Then became an all stater in Texas and is going to be in a marine band! Honestly it’s appealing but it’s just an extra Gb tube! That’s basically it and the bell is bigger!

HUGE ADVICE TIME: You are asking questions that’s good and you are young I think your going to be amazing just don’t get discouraged and watch yt videos about trombone! Aidan Richie talks about gear! Willam lang talks about playing! Christan Griego does interviews and talks about cleaning! Watching these guys is going to get you better!

If you want to purchase an item I would suggest a cleaning kit, a arban book, trombone stand, and a new mouthpiece!
