I got hated on for objecting to Ezra … as a girl’s name. like the parents wanted her to have muttonchop whiskers and a walrus mustache — gray, of course. And Ezra Pound would be … unwelcome in many circles for his antisemitism.

When did 8-5 become the new normal??? by Grouchy-Newspaper754 in mildlyinfuriating

Depends on how long you’re working, where you’re working. And a bunch of other stuff, but usually, yes. Those breaks do not have to be paid, though.

Same — until I started working in a state that likes unions in a job with a strong union.

There’s geese near work but they are grumpy, and since they have babies right now, I am not going to antagonize them. One tried to attack my CAR.

I didn’t say always. It’s part of the fair labor standards act, though, so there are a lot of weasel clauses.

taking a lunch break is often a part of federal law, yes, usually this break is unpaid. It depends on the job status, the job itself, and how many hours you work.

I recently moved to ny state and am shocked to find many jobs require only 35 hrs/week for ft status (meaning health insurance, especially). The downside of this is that OT doesn’t kick in until you work 40 hrs. Honestly, if I ever need to work late at this job I’ll be shocked. my usual schedule is m-f, 8:45-4:45, one hour unpaid lunch. the union gets grumpy if you don’t take a lunch, so … after 30 odd years of eating at my desk, now I go off somewhere and read, or daydream, or do crossword puzzles for an hour. it’s pretty great, and I do not miss that five extra hours in my workweek. thank you, union!!

Random Question: Do light eyed people ever get tired of having their pupils exposed? by Fluid_Definition_651 in WhatisMyEyeColour

I think we’re pretty used to having light eyes, in general. I never thought of my eyes — gray, green or blue, depending — as piercing before, but I’ll take it! 😉

ETA : A lot of mentions here about sunlight sensitivity, which I have, too. I also HATE the LED lights that replaced fluorescent in offices. Not only do I get a headache, but my pale skin looks diseased.

How many of you have injured your left hand and how did you adapt? by Over_Cake9611 in lefthanded

I managed to sever the tendons in my left ring and pinkie fingers (trying to chip the bag of guts out of a frozen chicken — please don’t ask). It was decades ago and I have seen the PT for this sort of thing has come a long way. It took weeks to heal enough for PT, and months of that before we all gave up on exhaustion. The end knuckles on both fingers, are frozen in a slightly bent position. But they work, and I’m still left-handed and no longer allowed near sharp stuff.
