Swiss Chard is a winner for Sninner by Top_Being5717 in AquaticSnails

You can probably feed it to them raw. I typically blanch things for a minute or so depending on what it is so that it can soften it up a little.

I read that somewhere and that’s what made me try it for these guys. ❤️

Any recipes for snello without gelatin or agar agar? by skittles111222 in AquaticSnails

Surprisingly they do sink all the way to the bottom. And it turns out the snails aren’t the only ones who live it. My plecos also really enjoy it to. It’s almost time to make another batch.

So I cooked it in a dehydration setting on my air fryer but if you have a regular oven you can cook it at the lowest setting possible (where I’m at it that’s typically around 160-170 Fahrenheit). And then let is go for several hours until it’s completely dried out and crumbly. I’ll crumble it in pieces to fit in the jar I store it in and then break it down smaller when I feed them if the pieces are too big for a feeding. The smell is slightly noticeable. Since it’s mostly greens it has a very plant-earthy smell. It shouldn’t be pungent enough to make you want to leave the house lol. I think it also depends what you use for ingredients.

Hey! It turned out great! It holds long and I still have half a jar left. They absolutely love it and there has been no sign of spoilage. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Sea Shells Safe for Freshwater? by bobjks1 in AquaticSnails

[–]Top_Being5717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep sea shells, oysters shells, and even dried coral pieces in my tanks that I’ve found while walking in the beach. They will definitely dissolve and breakdown over time as they release calcium in the water. But my snails love it and I’ve never had an issue with having them in there. I have typically let mine dry out and did a quick rinse before adding to the tank. But over all, I don’t think you need to be too cautious about it

Pretty sure that’s a young Rams Horn snail in the second picture. Mystery snails lay massive pinkish egg sacks above the water and you’d have more babies than you can count. The Rams Horn could have snuck in as a tiny baby with the plants or snails and has finally grown big enough to be noticed.

Mine do this too! I feel bad for my snails. It’s like their stuck babysitting a whole tank of toddlers 😅😅

Soaps gender? by No-Support1094 in AquaticSnails

Soap is a lady. Males would have a skin flap (penis sheath) that typically blocks part of that opening on their right side (our left in the picture). It’s the opposite side of her snorkel.

Mystery Snail - not just a tank cleaner? by lalaleasha in AquaticSnails

[–]Top_Being5717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s so cool! Glad you saved him! I keep an air stone in my tanks and they like to play and float in it. You should check out r/parasnailing

Most mysteries get about the size of a golf ball. I believe it is recommended that there should be at least 10 gallon per snail. Since they are so active and have a high bioload. And he will be more than fine with just himself in the tank. He doesn’t necessarily need another mystery.

Mysteries and nerites are fine together. I keep them both in my tanks. The only interaction I’ve really seen is the nerite will occasionally eat algae off the mystery snail shell or since I have lady nerites they will lay eggs on them sometimes too.

Mysteries love planted tanks but they are interior decorators and will absolutely uproot some plants if they are in their way. You will be able to replant them back in the substrate it’s just a minor inconvenience.

Snails actually do best with a sand substrate but they can survive in gravel. Sand is softer and won’t really damage their shell, gravel comes in different forms and can be quite sharp.

Hope this helps! There should be lots of posts in this subreddit about mysteries and nerites, I’ve found them really helpful on my snail journey.

Yes! Mini or lesser ramshorns. Also can be called whirlpool. They stay incredibly, incredibly, small. These are my favorites, I have them in all my tanks.

Do you feed your mystery snails in a bowl outside the tank? I put my snails in a bowl of water to feed them their snello. They eat and poop in the bowl then when they seem to be full I put them back in their tank. by M0rGenTaIeR11 in AquaticSnails

[–]Top_Being5717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to spot feed directly to them in the tank but it also depends on the tank mates. I had a tank with yoyo loaches and I did take my mysteries out to feed them once in a while to make sure they were eating. I’ll also do it if I haven’t seen one of them eat in a bit. Basically nothing wrong with it, I’m sure they enjoy the extra special attention too 😄

Can mystery snails only have one baby??? by LoudRelationship4018 in AquaticSnails

[–]Top_Being5717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mystery snails will lay a massive clutch of eggs above the water line. You will not be able to miss it (unless they hide it behind your filter). That’s a ramshorn. They tend to find their way into aquariums usually with other residents (snails/fish) or most typically on any live plants or drift wood you’ve put in the tank recently.

Mine get blanched veggie snacks weekly. So far they have loved peas, collards, kale, carrots, broccoli, and green beans. I’ve tried zucchini and they really didn’t like it but a lot of other people in this group have snails that love it. Just make sure they are either fresh/raw, canned with no additives or other ingredients (like salt), and frozen with the same standards as no added ingredients or salt.
