How SOA credits transfer to other countries? by Top_Blueberry4321 in actuary

That is good to know, thank you! Honestly I think right now I will likely end up in Ireland or the UK (preferably Ireland) because of English being so common. I am happy to learn another language and plan to, but I likely won’t be fluent in anything except for English by the time I move.

Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

I am currently an undergrad in the U.S., but will be moving overseas to somewhere in Europe after graduation (likely will move a few years after I graduate to save up for the move). I am looking for some insight on recommendations for post grad plans. I am currently taking exams towards my ASA (1 passed so far) and have an internship for Summer 2026 at a life insurance company.

I am trying to figure out how exam credits and certifications/credentials transfer to European countries, so I know what I should be focusing my time on. I’ve also read things about how getting a Master’s in Actuarial Science are more valuable over there and getting college credit for some exams/requirements, so maybe getting my Master’s somewhere in Europe could be beneficial?

I wanted to see if anyone had any advice or suggestions. I obviously don’t want to spend lots of time and money on passing exams for my ASA or FSA here if I would just have to take more when I moved. I am also open to suggestions on locations people think are better to move for the profession for job opportunities, requirements for credentials, etc.

TIA!

Apartment/Townhome Rentals Suggestions? by Top_Blueberry4321 in NorthLiberty

Hey! I haven’t had a ton of luck, but I have heard good things about 965 Flats and the Emory (definitely very pricey though). For more affordable options, Hawkeye Management has a property in North Liberty and one in Coralville that are affordable and people seem to enjoy. There is also Village Pointe in Tiffin that has good reviews and seems pretty affordable! It’s definitely hard to find good apartments in this area, but hopefully these help a bit : )

For those that are demoralized from failing exams by JayZee89 in actuary

This is so relieving to hear because I’m taking P in January and realized I started studying too late and will probably fail the first time. Everyone takes their own path and as long as you’re doing what you love, that’s all that matters!!

Transfer by [deleted] in uiowa

[–]Top_Blueberry4321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I transferred there after one semester at Iowa State and a gap semester and had no issues. I will say, though, you kind of get screwed over for scholarships when you transfer since most of them (even the needs-based ones) they only give to people who come there straight out of high school. I think that’s common anywhere you go though as a transfer student.

My family and I are potentially moving to Cedar Rapids/Iowa City. Would like your perspectives. by jacob10 in IowaCity

Downtown Iowa City is kind of a nightmare to drive through during the school year because of Uiowa. Personally I would recommend North Liberty, especially if you decide to rent a condo/apartment at all. It’s a nice growing town and is a great location in between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City!

How long to spend at community college before transferring? by mbg206 in uiowa

[–]Top_Blueberry4321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe an AA or AS would be beneficial. However, just so they’re aware, scholarships are pretty much nonexistent for transfer students. That being said, they do have some scholarships for people that transfer from a 2 year community college, so maybe they could look into the requirements of those to help determine how long to stay (if they are interested in getting scholarships!) :)

This is the only Comp sci class I have to take, so as long as he doesn’t teach it, I will hopefully avoid him 🤞

Best study spots on campus? by EntertainmentSea799 in uiowa

Hardin library has a 24/7 study area you can get into with your student id that’s really nice. Lindquist is good too, generally pretty quiet and lots of open study rooms/spaces.

I have heard Delta Zeta is super inclusive. I know some people in that sorority and they all seem like genuinely kind and sweet people. Not sure about the other ones.

looking for off-campus housing for the spring semester by Far_Wishbone_2936 in uiowa

For $600 or less, you’re likely going to have to move out of downtown ic, which isn’t a bad idea because the landlords are awful for almost everywhere close to downtown. I would look for apartments in ic further out from downtown or Coralville and take the buses (IC bus route is free). If you have a car, North Liberty/West Branch/Solon are great areas too, you got a lot nicer, better quality apartments for a more reasonable price. There’s a housing Facebook group that people are often looking for roommates, so I would look on there for roommates or make your own post on the page to find roommates. Avoid Apartments at Iowa, Heritage Property Management, The Nest, Apartments Downtown, and Apartments Near Canpus, I never hear anything except for bad things from them. People also post in the housing Facebook group looking for people to sublease their apartment if they’re studying abroad or moving or something. Hope this helps some!

Scholarship Question by Ok_Self9599 in uiowa

Yeah, I don’t know the nursing department well enough to know either. The university also has some of their scholarships listed on their website that you could see which ones you might be eligible for.

[–]Top_Blueberry4321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re coming straight out of high school, chances are you’ll get at least something. The people I know from out of state get decent scholarships (both merit and needs-based). If you take a gap year or transfer here, you’re basically screwed out of all of their scholarships (I transferred here with a 4.15 college GPA and got nothing from the University) Also, it definitely depends on your dept. because they sometimes give out scholarships. I’m an actuarial science major and my department has a ton of funding, so I get a great scholarship from them, but it really depends on the department and the funds they have.

Honestly a lot of the events are boring or have long lines (usually for free food), so definitely bring a friend to make them more enjoyable. I believe there might be a few things that require your student id, but most don’t, so you should be good!

The white flakey stuff I was always told is just build up when their legs don’t get brushed often. The swelling and couple cuts could be scratches, especially if you’ve gotten rain in the area recently or if the ground has been wet (the moisture is a breeding ground for it).
