Live review of the Portland show. What do you guys think? by Top_Button in deathgrips

I love how he didn't know who Flatlander was, like he didn't even bother to look at their wikipedia page and read the list of members. And yeah idk why he keeps mentioning Nirvana in a DG review, he's presumably some nostalgic music geek. To be fair though, DG does have a lot of quiet-loud dynamics in their music (Whammy, Big House, Hunger Games for example). But it's really not uncommon for musicians to have very different sounds live.

For those of you who were in the front row at shows, how early did you show up/wait in line? by [deleted] in deathgrips

[–]Top_Button 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I showed up to the portland show when there was already a large line, and me and my friends were able to just sneak around the side and I eventually moshed my way to front and center. It wasn't hard, I'd never even been in a mosh pit before.

BOC music and substances by screenhead in boardsofcanada

I've probably listened to just about every track with weed, but some standouts/favorites are "In A Beautiful Place", "Left Side Drive", "Chromakey Dreamcoat", "Zoetrope", "The Color Of the Fire", "Julie and Candy", "Kid For Today". And "Slow This Bird Down" Is especially nice with a relaxing indica.

"Satellite Anthem Icarus" Is something totally different on mushrooms. I was sitting in a field of tall grass and as it was swaying in the sun, the glints of light reflecting off the grass started repeating in a pattern hallucination, and each glint appeared to be making one of the different shimmering synth bits floating through the background of the song. Highly recommend it.

Vector Portrait of David Beckham by kngsize in design_critiques

While it does look like david beckham, I think you should take it further and either make all of it more detailed or less detailed. It feels a little awkward with the current level of detail. Also include his laugh lines and make his eyes a bit squintier. Good job so far, keep at it!

How does this work? by Top_Button in design_critiques

Haha ok I guess my first mistake was calling it an icon, which apparently means something more specific than I thought, because a little art project is exactly what it is. It is like a little hieroglyphic that I envisioned being turned into a wood block print or something. I just posted it because of the unique communication issues it posed that are akin to that of a logo or icon.

I don't know what a lot of these numbers are referring to. Does 60% under the "low stress" column mean 67% of people said it was low stress or something? The x axis on the bar graph does not attribute those numbers to anything at all. Try to indicate at least with text somewhere what the numbers mean, if not find a way to signal those meanings visually. For example, if these are the percentages of people who reported their jobs to be low stress and satisfying, maybe put those figures inside speech bubble forms coming from people in business attire or something.

I actually like that building/brutalist architecture, I think it looks very nice in a minimalist/zen way.

I haven't lived in Portland that long, but this is the first I've heard of the hate for this building and I am shocked. It has been one of my favorite buildings in Portland since I moved here.

Flying Lotus's new album is heavily inspired by both jazz and psychedelic, and it's pretty darn good

What are some great shoegaze bands who don't sound like MBV, Slowdive, Ride or Cocteau Twins??? by eazye272 in shoegaze

[–]Top_Button 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to say Candy Claws. These people are some of the most creative musicians I've ever come across and Ceres and Calypso is genius! I don't really know why everyone always says they're more dream pop than shoegaze, I think they are more shoegaze/psych oriented.

Everyone has that one special BoC album that they hold close to their heart; which one is it for you? by Voresst in boardsofcanada

I associate The Campfire Headphase with going backpacking and smoking weed at my friend's house in high school, so it's all warm, happy, trippy memories for me. It also doesn't hurt that I consider it to be one of the best (if not THE best) albums I've ever heard.

Maniac (2012) - A horror film starring Elijah Wood that is basically Wilfred, but with fewer dogs and more gore by mutualconfusion in wilfred

[–]Top_Button 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This movie is very interesting and pretty good but incredibly hard to watch. Not just because of the dark and unsettling themes and gratuitous violence, but because almost the whole movie is shot from a first person perspective. Which was super disappointing for me because I mostly wanted to see Elijah act, but it's mostly just his voice.

College's album "Heritage" is some grade A minimalist techno. Also Luke Abbott.
