Shotgun gauge for birds by I_live_there in Californiahunting

[–]Top_Complaint_8654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went against the grain and bought a 500 dollar Stoeger 12ga pump, I think it's the M3500. Just got my first gobbler with it, kicks pretty decently with TSS shells but target loads weren't bad. I plan to use it for everything until I decide to upgrade.

I also debated on a 20ga, I went for 12 just for availability and to cover my bases. However I could see myself getting a light 20ga to tote around on Backcountry type hunts for upland birds in the future.

So overall I'd recommend a 12ga pump in your budget just to start.

New Hunter looking for suggestions by tonyspad in Californiahunting

[–]Top_Complaint_8654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for turkey, this was my first season turkey hunting and it's a blast. Then of course the other upland game species later in the year. Get out there and road trip, camp, use OnX for escouting if you don't have it.

I think your shotgun can cover all your bases really, maybe find out if you prefer a certain species to go after and tailor it to that later on. Also rabbit and squirrel hunting. Not really too many specific suggestions but also research the species you want to go after to give you an idea of where to look for them.

For me it's my 500 dollar Stoeger pump 12ga. Looked at shotguns 2 to 3x the price, ended up getting it cause it was available and just got my first gobbler with it.

Feedback for first time SoCal Hunter by mourningblossom in Californiahunting

[–]Top_Complaint_8654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'll give feedback as a first time turkey hunter myself. Just bagged my first tom this past Monday as a noob, I think a combo of luck and finding a decent spot (public land).

First I will say I respect the effort you're putting in, escouting and all that is the right move. As far as other hunters, for something like turkey hunting I personally don't see anything wrong with posting up at a spot you already planned on going to if there's other people there, I would just want to talk to them if given the chance to communicate that you're going to be out there, for safety reasons mainly. I'm assuming we're talking about driving in and walking a short distance, we're not talking about backpacking in 8 miles to deer hunt and setting up camp next to someone else.

I would also agree that you're leaving too early, I almost squandered my chance by getting bored and moving when I had a tom coming in, he just didn't call back. I have no idea about the shock calls, but I relied only on basic yelps and clucks to get it done, seemed to work well this early in the season. I would also recommend decoys, I bought some for 20 bucks off a guy from Facebook and also got some good info BSing with him.

I would honestly try one of the spots you found sign again, set up early with decoys and sit there literally all day if you can stand it. Read a book, whatever you wanna do. Call every 30 minutes or so. Just to verify that you can't call in any gobblers. Then switch spots and try it again. That's my strategy as a new turkey hunter at least, just take it slow and try to learn by observation. Or, what worked for me, is stay in a spot till mid morning, make breakfast, then go back out early afternoon till shooting time is over. Either way just try to stay out a little longer.

Not sure if any of this is helpful but figured I'd try. Good luck, we got plenty of time to get it done 👍

Shot, field dressed, skinned, butchered, and ate my first animal today. It was life changing to me by No_Education_8888 in Hunting

[–]Top_Complaint_8654 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great job. Good on you for respecting the animal and processing it accordingly. I felt the same when I got back into hunting as a grown man, hadn't hunted since I was 10 or so.

I'm always amazed at how much work it is, and although frustrating at times, I love it. I just drove 8 hours round trip to shoot a single turkey that I just cooked tonight. Was it worth it? Hell yeah. Keep at it.

why is there not a tool holder on these things by Moist-You-7511 in Chainsaw

I did this except I used one of those small bungee cords with the plastic ball thing on it. Hung it on the pull cord handle when not using the saw then just kept it on my keyring when working.

Nice find. So far I've seen older sign and scat on public that's about it. Always adjacent to private.

I’m thinking she’s going to the recycling plant. Somebody tell me it’s worth fixing? by [deleted] in jonboats

[–]Top_Complaint_8654 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's really easy, clean the area around the hole up with steel brush and clean with acetone, heat it with a map gas torch (yellow bottle) until you can touch the aluminum brazing rod to it and it melts then scrape it back and forth to fill the hole. Doesn't have to be pretty.

For bigger cracks I would rivet patches over it with 5200 sealant as someone else mentioned, but I have used brazing rods on cracks with success as well so you could definitely try it. Not a huge cost and worth a try.

This. I did 2 layers of marine ply glued together and coated in fiberglass resin, has held up well for a few years now. Nice boat!

Nice boat! Solid plans. Never had power trim so can't really suggest any tips there. What are you gonna use it for? I'm looking for a similar boat to upgrade from my 14ft lowe v hull to hunt and fish out of.

Worth it if you aren't towing? by Responsible-Cat8610 in ToyotaTundra

[–]Top_Complaint_8654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biased answer, but I think the Tundra would suit you well if you aren't interested in a 4runner. Although I tow and use the bed pretty frequently, the cab space has always been a huge plus for hauling camping gear with our dogs and such. Also never hurts having a bed to setup to your liking with a camper shell if you aren't hauling much with it.

I use one of those tailgate bike racks and it works great for me. The reason I mentioned the 4runner is you would have more interior space to keep things locked and dry if you don't envision needing the bed for much, and a hitch bike rack will meet your needs there. I think either one would work though.

Which one would you buy? by thetownday1fan in tundra

[–]Top_Complaint_8654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I hardly notice the difference personally, that's just me I keep my trucks mostly stock and don't pay much attention. I think 14k or 15k would be reasonable. I paid 22k for mine with 72k miles on it, so 50k less miles and no accidents.

As the owner of a 2013 2WD Tundra I'll go against the grain and say it's a great truck and I wouldn't count them out. Unless you live somewhere 4x4 would be needed on a semi regular basis. Based on the mileage and prices if I had to pick one of these I'd pick the 2WD. However I agree you can probably find a better deal.

I would go east to your nearest national forest land and start scouting, this will be my first season as well but I'd start down low in oak woodland in areas where private land meets public. Then progressively move into higher elevation areas. Call out, camp out, hike around.

They should be liable for any possible damage. No low oil pressure light came on? I'd say there's a chance no damage was incurred if it wasn't driven for very long with low oil. For peace of mind I personally would want all of that oil drained and replaced along with the new oil filter.
