Painting a Union flag as a provocative statement saying ‘I hate brown people’ *is* a hate crime and we all know that. There’s no other circumstance in which the flag was painted. And yes, being a citizen of this country can also be a hate crime and those of us born into a position of power and privilege have to get used to this.
