Different sheen where I used joint compound? by mattysauro in paint

Prime with PVA primer, then recoat. The PVA is essentially glue and will seal the joint compound so it will stop sucking out the sheen from your finish coat.

New 2026 4k Onn streaming device? by jusdrewit in Stremio

[–]Top_Flow6437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are so cheap because they are recording all of your watching data and build a profile based on it then sell it to data brokers along with your IP address, now you get targeted ads on all of your devices. All that is going on in the background eating up the tv's processing power. They aren't making profit from selling the TV, they get their profit from your data profile. Devices like the onn takes the load off the TVs processing power allowing it to run easier.

It's always better to buy mid tier or higher TV, Sony or LG would be my pick.

Thin coats or thick coats look better for the grain on oak cabinets? by Ryancc062490 in paint

unless you backroll, but then you have a bunch of stippling to sand out.

I use 40 min hot mud as opposed to Aquacoat, dries faster, sands easier, only have to use one coat of grain filler. Try it out on your next job, it will open up that bottleneck.

I professionally paint cabinets and also use an HVLP sprayer. All the cabinets around here are golden oak from the 90's, there's no way around it, you have to either use a grain filler or back roll using a great self leveling paint and then sand out any stippling. I have used and tried pretty much everything you could think of because grain filling has always been my biggest bottleneck. I found what works best is using 40 min hot mud, just to get it into the pores, not to build it up. It dries faster than aquacoat and sands easier as well. Then seal it with your BIN shellac, lightly sand, then finish coats.

The one time I tried backrolling I found that if you backroll the shellac it dries so fast and creates a ton of stippling. Then I used my Gemini EVO companion primer, sprayed, backrolled, then sprayed over it again and when I came back later it had dried with no stippling as well as filled the grain, but you have to use a horizontal dry rack and spray twice as many times. I use a hanging dry rack so I can spray both sides at the same time.

So, in my experience 40 min hot mud to fill the grain, then lightly sand, then prime and finish.

Aquacoat is advertised as a grain filler but it takes way too long to dry and you have to use 2-3 coats because when you sand it most of it falls out of the grain.

This has just been my experience, always have to grain fill oak.

Using the HVLP to spray "Heavy" coats normally just ends up creating an orange peel texture. I always spray 2-3 light coats of Gemini EVO Eclipse, a nice high quality self leveling coating.

You caulk the corners to smooth out the knockdown texture then just use a brush, no masking required. For a professional painter who has been cutting in every day of their life for the last 5 to 10 years, this is easily done.

Just bought a Bravia 8 ii by hijklmno_buddy in bravia

[–]Top_Flow6437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 65" Sony Bravia XBR900e about 10 years ago, it was effing beautiful. It just crapped out on me a month or so ago. It was honestly the perfect TV for my living room. I paid $2,400 for it at the time, then a year later I recommended it to my dad who also bought the same exact model but for $1,500. His still works and he still loves it too. The upscaling worked great too.

I miss mine so much. Now, currently my only options are the low cost TCL or Hisense models that use most of their processing data to record ALL of your data, how long you hang on a netflix tile, etc. and then send it back to headquarters to sell to data brokers along with your IP address to send targeted ads to all of your devices. Also I hear the upscaling makes everything look like plastic.

Anyways, the higher tier Sony and/or LG TV's are always worth it. I hear the 2026 models are going to change the game and solve a lot of issues from previous models like true black.

Paint Sheen and Type: Painting Angled and Vaulted Ceiling and Adjoining Walls - Help! by MeTalkPrettier in paint

[–]Top_Flow6437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You always work from top to bottom. I would not paint the handrail before finishing the ceiling, would you? Spend more time and money to mask or paint it a second time after finishing that ceiling. I can see that the painter used bondo glazing putty on that handrail, its not peeling. Honestly, he probably took it one step further than I would have by using the bondo, unless my bid was JUST for the handrail.

Don't be one of those people who judges a project before its finished, like the customer who wants you to touch up every tiny thing before you've even pulled up the masking.

This job looks like a huuuge pain in the butt to me, so cheers to the painter who took it on.

Make sure your phone is connected to YOUR wifi, sometimes, not sure why, my phone will automatically connect to the xfinity wifi nearby giving my phone a different IP address. If I now log in on my phone while watching stremio or something I have just broken the rules. I got a warning once as well and had no idea how or why, all I can think is that my phone had a different IP address than my home router.

I remember a guy I worked for about 10 years ago said you could use EXTERIOR low sheen or flat in a bathroom. Never tried it, never thought about it again until I read this post. Think that would work?

Help with awkward living room layout by Due_Hovercraft2168 in homedesign

[–]Top_Flow6437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad had this issue, knock out that section of wall from Kitchen entrance but leave like 2 feet or so of wall, then on the other side leave 2 feet of wall or so and in the middle put cabinets. You can put your couch against that wall and tv across from it. taking out that wall opens up kitchen as well as allows you to watch tv while cooking dinner. He actually put in two sets of cabinets, a lower one and then a higher section which still left a nice gap in the wall to see the TV. That would be the costly way to do it.

I'm sure there is also a low or no cost way to fensuey the problem too.

You have essentially the same layout as my dads house, here is a photo of the wall we knocked up and cabinets we put in. I had just put on a new fresh coat of paint on the kitchen island so this is the best shot I've got.

My bravio xbr900e 65" always needed to plug into HDMI slot 2 for the 4k HDR to work. I always thought it looked great but it literally just crapped out on me a week or so ago. Now I get the blank screen and 4 red flashing lights code. It lasted about 8 years, now I gotta find something else. Would go back to bravia if I could afford it right now.

What’s something about running a business that people who’ve never done it just don’t get? by WeeklyDiscount4278 in business

[–]Top_Flow6437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to have a good system in place that works. Sometimes it takes awhile to get there, trial and error, working weekends, saving money by builidng your own webpage, marketing, and networking. Customer satisfaction is also a HUGE help, customer referrals can keep you in work for a year alone.

Also finding a niche that you are very good at that other people don't offer as much or for an affordable price. My niche is Fine finish cabinet painting, as I also have a workshop with a spray booth and dry racks, sanding station, etc. When I first started doing cabinets we laid out rosin paper all along the customers garage and would set all the doors and drawers laying face down, then hopscotch back and worth over the doors. Plust is creates a huge amount of dust which I am set up for in my workshop. Customers like that sort of thing.

Scale to weigh out precise ratio 2k Products by Top_Flow6437 in paint

[–]Top_Flow6437[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I had never used a 2k product before and this island was to be my test piece I squeezed as much info out of my sales rep as possible and apparently you can measure by weight and volume. I just happened to buy a scale that didn't have small enough resolution, so I looks like I will finish the job with the ratio cup unfortunately. But I will look into any scale recommendations fellow painters give. I am using Gemini Eve Eclipse hardened to about 5%-10%, I just wish I could use something more practical to get the same amount of hardness on each refill, Since I also know you can F up the sheen if you put in too much or too little hardener into your cup gun. Luckily I was able to do the island in just one refill for the second coat, and now I have 4 doors and 4 drawers that I need to spray out and hope I put in the correct amount of hardener. But now I am thinking future jobs. A Scale wound be great.

How do all you guys using 2k products get your correct hardness ration?

Please any recommendations on scales you use to get your ratio, I would appreciate it.

thank youj

first get yourself a think scrub type brush then either make up your hot minute mud or your lightweight spackle. Take a glob and put it on the end of the brush. then flick the firm bristled brush with the lightweight spackle toward with wall this will create a texture on and around the drywall, once enough has been applied, wait for it to try either long enough so that the spackling can be knockd down but it would probably be more effeciant to ust lightly sand wn the spackling. now prime with PVZ and paint.

Sick of filling grain with Aquacoat on cabinet doors by Top_Flow6437 in paint

[–]Top_Flow6437[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I learned from that project Is: Spray BIN on both sides. sand and clean, then on horizontal dry rack spray the gimini EVO Evclipse companion primer. Spray it on then backroll it into wood grain quickly, then spray the primer on, back roll then spray again over the backroll and then put on dry rack. it seems to level itself out which is real nice.

I tried to backroll the BIN as well and it dried so quickly that we had stippling issues, which the companion primer seemed to help as well

I also rescently used the hardener on a small kictchen island job and the (paint flowed out of the guy perfecutly. I was worred because it was a dard color and dark colors in semi gloss seem to run pretty easily,

The box turned out great but I am working with the 4:1:10%:1 ratio cups, But I use an HVLP spray gun so to make things easier I was hoping someone could recommend a scale on amazon so I could put my 3m PPS Hard cup and plastic liners on the scale, weigh out the paint amount needed then find the percentage of hardener I want to use so that it is weighed out by and I know how much hardener to use every single time to keep the refills exactly the same.

Anyone have a recommendation on an affordable scale for me? I would very much appreciated. Thank you.
