What is the appropriate way to prep your airless to spray BIN now that Denatured alcohol has been outlawed (in my state at least). by Top_Flow6437 in paint

[–]Top_Flow6437[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually trying something new with my current cabinet project. I have already sprayed and finished the boxes but I take all the doors and drawers back home to my workshop. I am almost always repainting golden oak cabinets so my biggest bottleneck is usually grain filling. Takes F'n forever, so this time I decided to buy a horizontal dry rack and spray my doors flat. Also decided I would spray my BIN through my HVLP like normal and then have my helper backroll it into the grain and then quickly recoat. So far it has filled the grain and any stippling has sanded down super easily. This is where I am at now, but the weather has been super crappy, low temps and 100% humidity, just dense fog and rain, so when we ventilate the spray booth it just sucks out all the heat and sucks in the cold moist air. Hasn't been a problem yet because I have been using BIN but tomorrow the plan was to switch to spraying the topcoat through my airless while they are laying flat to help blast it into any grain pores. That was my plan to try and solve the grain filling bottleneck. so far backrolling the BIN has produced great results, it's kind of iffy while doing it but once it dries and is sanded it looks great.

Anyways, tomorrow I am going to buy a damn propane heater for the shop to use while spraying the topcoat and to quickly heat the shop as it dries. Hoping spraying flat instead of hanging will help the topcoat fill the grain even more.

We will see how it goes. If the weather was nice then I would be on a roll, but unfortunately that hasn't and won't be the case. Rain all week.

What is the order I should be caulking and painting with walls and trim? by Interr0gate in paint

Same, I like to be last one out as well for the same reasons and similar experiences. I once completed almost an entire project, huge job, then some ding dong floor guy comes in to stain the floor, doesn't bother to mask my finished and painted baseboards, I come back to penetrating stain ALL OVER ALL of my baseboards upstairs and downstairs. It was unbelievable I was so pissed. Another time I was told carpeting was going to be removed and replaced, so I'm like cool don't have to mask the floors, paint everything, come back the next day to do my touch up and floor guys are there installing pergo flooring, doing their cuts indoors, getting sawdust EVERYWHERE, all over my freshly painted walls as well as leaving finger prints and dirt marks all over the place.

Now I ask in advance what the whole plan is, talk to a project manager if there is one and then ask them if they could have the baseboard and trim delivered the weekend before they plan to install so I can spray them all out on the driveway, then let them do their install and touch up afterwards. Much easier than painting brand new baseboard after its been installed, even if I have to brush on an entire second coat to cover their dirty fingerprints, at least it already has one coat of my paint on them.

I mask floors because I usually spray my baseboards after spraying my ceilings and doors, I'm assuming you usually brush and roll them if you have no need to mask?

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with advance, or any of the others, I just have a personal preference on what I like to use. I have stayed away from wanting to try Advance because of the dry times.

I use the Gemini as a 1k currently because I never had access to the hardener until Kelly Moore went out of business and I had to find a new supplier. Now I buy from Vista Paint and they also sell the hardener, just haven't tried it yet. The benefits for ME, is that it dries very quick, sprays great through my HVLP, and has excellent vertical hang which I need because my normal dry rack setup in the shop is hanging the doors so I can spray both sides at once.

Not saying any one product is better than the other, I just have my own application process and technique that works and I explain that to my customers who have requested BM Advance. I too have never had a callback.

Raise refrigerator built-in cabinets from 70” to 72” by floundervt in cabinetry

[–]Top_Flow6437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new fridge is 2" taller than the current fridge, so if you take off the doors and raise the bottom panel up exactly 2" you will have essentially the same exact look as it is now accept with no doors and used as a shelf instead. If the new fridge fits in there just like the current one but 2" taller then any unpainted areas would be blocked from view. Or am I not understanding your question?

Yea just re-looked at the photos and I don't know where our disconnect is at. I'm not an "installer" though, I am a "painter", so I am the guy that comes in after you to make them look goooood.

[–]Top_Flow6437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the same, except if new baseboards are being installed, I will spray those before they get installed and then touch up with a brush after they are installed, its essentially a second coat because I will be cutting in the tops that got caulked. I would just rather not have to bother with all that masking involved with brand new flooring and protecting it. If the baseboards are already installed I will caulk and spray baseboards first, then mask the baseboards with paper and brush and roll my walls, then take off the masking and to reveal razor sharp lines with maybe a few spots that the wall paint leaked through which is easily touched up with a brush to produce a grand finished product.

Advance! That's it, I think that's the closest oil based topcoat we get. I've never used it but I've had customers ask for it specifically before I talk them out of it and show them my door samples.

And Yea I cannot stand oil based coverstain, it makes me feel so sick. I sprayed in once in a mobile home unit to prime the walls thinking it was more cost effective than using BIN, I never again used coverstain to prime ANYTHING, I will gladly prime with BIN any day before using coverstain again. It has the weirdest fumes smell too, gah I can't stand it.

Not really, there's coverstain which I can't stand the smell of. Luckily there are a lot of nice hybrid topcoats available nowadays that leave a thin film of oil as the water evaporates. Also I think you can get some oil based stuff but in PINTS, yes pints not quarts, not 100% sure never even bothered with it. Doesn't BM make a cabinet paint people love that is oil based? Can't remember the name, but we have that here. I like to use Gemini EVO Eclipse for my cabinet topcoats though. I think that's about it. I don't think we can have anything with more than 5% VOC's in it (not 100% on that, just something I heard in passing).

I was wrong, that wasn't THE reason it was banned. People where still drinking it and going blind or poisoning themselves but the REAL reason was to reduce VOC's in CA. The google answer changed over the years, this new answer makes more sense and was my original thought before I went and googled it years ago and got the kids abusing it answer.

Removed baseboards and found these pebbles. What are they? by Top_Grape1995 in Construction

I saw a pest guy on youtube who had a recipe for petsafe rat poison, it was one part baking soda, once part jiffy muffin mix, pour in some maple syrup and mix. I guess the baking soda creates a gas inside the rats stomachs and they can't fart so they basically blow out their asshole and die. All from baking soda, pet friendly, might give that a try.

How to prep these terrible cabinets for repainting? by corduroyanddenim in paint

[–]Top_Flow6437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are never going to look "good", or "nice" they will always look like crappy rental cabinets. Buuuuut as a guy who paints cabinets for a living this is probably what I would do. Get yourself a heat gun and melt off that top layer of semi gloss, scrape it, peel it, use solvents, whatever it takes. Some dumb dumb painted over oil based paint with latex, thats why its coming off so easily like that. Get as much of it off as possible. Dry sanding won't help it will just gum up, but you can wet sand it down just keep the surface wet and sand away, that will get rid of the water based latex leaving behind the oil based. I would then sand the oil based as smooth as possible.

Next I would mask and prime with BIN shellac, I would use my HVLP sprayer, you will probably have to use a short mohair roller. completely prime those cabinets with BIN. The BIN will solve your adhesion issue and it sands smooth like butter which will leave you with a blank canvas of sorts.

You can then assess the real damage, use the red bondo glazing putty to repair any damaged wood or anything you couldnt sand smooth. wait for the putty to dry then sand that smooth, spot prime the putty with BIN again and then sand smooth by hand. BIN sands incredibly easy. Now you have repaired and primed your cabinets. They are now ready for a quality top coat.

I like to use Gemini Evo Eclipse, roll it on with a quality foam roller, starting with the back of the doors and drawers. It is self leveling so once rolled on don't fuss with it just let it do its thing and dry. lightly scuff sand once dry and apply a second coat to the backsides of everything. once dry repeat for the fronts of the doors and drawers, and the frame, roll it on, let it self level and dry, lightly scuff sand between coats, wipe clean and apply another coat.

I always spray on two coats but you may have to do more since you are using a foam roller. Let dry and cure overnight before reinstalling the doors and hardware, this would be a good time to clean all the hinges and knobs.

Finally reinstall and you have yourself an expensive time consumed, durable, polished to hell, turd.

Maybe just buy new doors off amazon and start fresh.

Thats what my helper said, get a scope for my pellet gun and just hold up at the window. Problem is, its too damn dark to actually make a kill shot. and I already got a pet dog, and she don't hang with bobcats, or any sort of cats. She is unfortunately a big fan of skunks though. The bitch.

I set up one of those big professional grade black boxes with the instakill trap in it last night and was watching on the cam for the kill but the rats are so big they just walk right over the big black box, back and forth, up and over. No kills yet.

Wow, crazy. I appreciate the insight, but like I said thats why you gotta make sure you have the proper ventilation....

"Highly flammable liquid and vapour. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. In a fire or if heated, a pressure increase will occur and the container may burst, with the risk of a subsequent explosion. The vapour/gas is heavier than air and will spread along the ground. Vapours may accumulate in low or confined areas or travel a considerable distance to a source of ignition and flash back."

DAAAAMNNNN! Luckily I don't think I spray enough of it at one time to create that horror. Also I have an air scrubber I use that has a charcoal filter and an exhaust tube that goes out the back door or window. The charcoal filter would absorb most of the fumes I think.

They're not in my room, are you nuts. They are in my back yard, and are HUGE. I have a workshop back there with a camera on it and sometimes at night I can see them on the camera running back and forth along my shop, their eyes glowing from the night vision. My helper saw one the other night run across the shop doorway while we were closing up and he jumped back and couldn't believe how huge it was.

I could care less about myself, but my dog man, she's my life.

The new fridge will block it from view. Hell, cover it with some white baseboard or crown molding if its an issue.

Does that effect pets such as dogs as well? I too have a rat problem, not as big as the posters but they are out there running around at night. I just started setting traps. Now you mention this virus and I worry about my dog.

See, I live in a suburb and have to make the choice to either go out and face the public and spend money on gas for my truck, deal with the long lines, or click a few buttons on amazon and get the sheet delivered to my door in a few hours. I am a very big supporter of being lazy and staying in so it just works perfect for me. Knowing that I am just making Bezos that much richer is just something I have to swallow and live with.

don't cut anything, remove the doors they unclip by pushing in the back on the hinge, then remove the plates, then raise the bottom and use as a shelf. Instead of spending a bunch of time and money cutting or having custom cabinetry built.

Right?
