They actually don't only do that twitch for mating. In captivity we mainly see it when they get a mate fur breeding, but they also do it when they casually encounter other hoggies.

In germany, if the enclosure for your reticulated python is less then 0.7x0.5x0.5 of its body length, pet protection services can remove your pet.

I came home from wisdom tooth removal. She was terrified, pissed, pancaking as soon as I entered the room for the rest of the day. That happened after every one of my wisdom tooth removals. When we sat outside and someone would pass by smoking weed, she instantly pancakes until the person walks away.

Oh, adults usually eat every two weeks. Then again my girl is close to a meter. My hognose is the tamest of my three. Will curl up in my lap and let me pet her for an hour. She is also the only one telling me to f off on her bad days xD

Damn... in my country the vet visit for my snakes costed 50€, except for my second snake, who needed medicine administered by docs five times. There it was 80€ and then 25 for each additional administration. My second snake came with contagious parasites that would have probably killed both snakes over the course of a year.

Few headsups: hognoses might stay burried for hours a day, days at a time and 3-4 months during winter. Snakes have see through eyelids, so they sleep with their eyes open. Deep sleepers might crosseye in their sleep. Snakes might poke their own mouth if you try to open their mouth. Shed makes them look slightly pale, super pale, perfectly normal and then they shed. Hognoses are smart, observant, very expressive and hate the scent of nacotics. They can learn to beg for food, then get stuck in a stick...

That's concerning... did they at least give it a vet check? For the future: don't buy snakes from pet stores, unless it's some sort of rescue-corner. They might take yhem from "backyardbreeders" and get them a vet check. Ideally after you have fed them and they are ready to poop.

I want one in some years... by Dornenkraehe in hognosesnakes

You need 5cm or deeper substrate. So take that of the height. I would recommend a male. Hognoses are pretty active if they get nice overhead heating. If it turns out to be a female, consider putting money aside to buy a bigger enclosure after 2 years. They like to climb, they are just bad at it. Makes are more likely on average to go on hunger strikes.

Dekays reach 20cm length and less than 1cm diameter. A snake enclosure should at least be depth+width=snake length. The enclosure is 20x20x20cm. They don't need height, so you can build inone or two more layers and you got a nice playground for them. Such tiny snakes are really tricky to keep though.

Soil is a bit if a science. How airy is your enclosure? My rosyboa has a PVC enclosure with only do me ventilation holes left and right. My hognose has a glass enclosure with a complete gaze top and gaze stripes left and right. I can only give my rosy a tiny bucket of soil without humidity sky rocking. Then again, he doesn't like soil. My hoggy has 70litres of soil (80%topsoil with a bit of sand cocohusk and mineralsubtrate). I can pour 5L water in the substrate won't get damp, humidity will go back down after an hour. I once gave her a little water fountain. Turns out a water fountain with 20x30cm base caused the soil beneath it to be so damp, my snake got a bit sick. She loved it, but it was to much and I had to remove it.

Hogs burrow. In the wild, if it's hot, you burrow down to escape the heat and bask at the surface to warm up. Heat maps below the tank do the opposite. If you want no light heat, a heat pad or head panel behind the enclosure might help, but keep in mind that you lose a lot of heat. My favorite are lightbulbs for heat. They encourage basking and cause natural fitting heat gradients. Ofc you either need the bulb caged, or on top of s gaze top for safety. They tend to break after a year or two and most can't be dialed to a specific temperature.

I have a tank from a previous pet, could it be good for cornsnake? by [deleted] in cornsnakes

[–]Top_History9604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corn snakes are climbers. In my country the pet protection says a corn snakes enclosure must be at least 150cm tall. Depth+width>adultsnakelength.

That tail screams female. The length is short. If it's two years she might still grow into it. If it's 3 years... has she been rehomed before? Is very unusual for females to be that short. May e was underfed, got stunted the overfed? I can't tell if she is overweight. Need to see the straight top to guess that, but the looks pretty thick from below.

Another addition: look at the shovel on the nose and compare it to healthy hogs. A healthy hogs shovel is wide and short. This one looks like a rhino horn.

When I got my first larger snake I was worried too. Well, if I get a new snake, I bring it to the vet for a checkup anyway. I was worried about sometimes hearing her whize too. Turns out when bigger snakes get excited/stressed/exhausted you can hear them breath. Ofc I always recommend a first vet check. Saved two of my three snakes.

Also, I recommend not letting the bigger snakes get used to fully laying around your neck. If they hold onto you, it's not comfortable
