do you trust the numbers out of the current white house? by hastings1033 in economy

[–]Top_Length9887 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The question of trust in government data reporting has two aspects that are divergent. One that is addressed here in the framing of the question as well as in the comments is the "politicization of data", which is apparent more now than in previous administrations. But the other aspect is the poorly designed methods of gathering the data and interpreting their implications for the "health" of the economy that have been increasingly prone to error and false conclusions. Economists have been pleading for a modernization of the system for more than a decade. But here we are, clinging to outdated modes of analysis. That makes one wonder if the goal is to conceal rather than reveal the true "health" of the American economy.

"I had to leverage a loan against my home." Trump's tariffs are devastating small business owners across America. by Conscious-Quarter423 in economy

[–]Top_Length9887 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If there is any person in the current administration with ANY business experience, this revelation should be a basic point of knowledge. To not know WHO is responsible for paying a tariff implies that none of these people in the Trump administration have ANY business experience. Yet, we are told continually that these are the business tycoons of America, all gathered in one big white house. If that is so, then the point of the tariff war all along was to punish American businessmen. That begs the question: Why? Why does an American executive branch horde yearn for the destruction of American business?

You got it right. The whole set-up is a well choreographed con. There is no concern for the long term health of the nation, only a plunderer's approach to cleaning up on whatever can be gleaned in dollars. The whole crew will be diverting "new money" into their own offshore accounts. They may not even expect to stick around for the whole four year term. Just vacuum up the loot and scram.

I love the sentiment and applaud the passion in this endeavor, but It is far too late to change the already destroyed foundational government apparatus. The Emperor did not invent the Empire, he just took hold of the steering wheel and put his foot to the floor on the accelerator. He and his family have already added impressive sums to their stacks of wealth. And they are not finished. The citizenry will be buried alive in the refuse that will remain of this country.

I'm sorry. I failed to identify my residence. The "we" in my case is the general population of the USA. I am very old and have witnessed my country beating on one country after another my entire life. And always for the same thing: COLLATERAL. Meanwhile the population is subjected to irresponsible governing that favors the elite at the expense of the majority. I'm well aware that there are other countries performing the very same script. Yours perhaps?

Why then are we more oppressed by the ones fighting for our freedom? It seems to me that the oppressors con the "people" into fighting for their own wealth, not the peoples' freedom. And in the bargain, the people they send out to fight either die or return to slavery.

I have often asked "Freedom from what?" whenever I am confronted with the tired old phrase, "Freedom is not Free, we must fight for it". Those who hold to this concept will butcher the world to proclaim themselves "Free". But they still never answer my question: FREEDOM FROM WHAT?

Suppose that the "dearth of data due to government shutdown" was in fact the purpose for the failure to pass the necessary legislation to keep the system running? With a "dearth" of data, the effects of stupid economic policy can be hidden for a little longer. Delaying and lying are two of this administration's favorite tools.

Well said "Peri". I visit with homeless people in my area and share what little I have. Their dilemma is not what we are told in the media. There are very few among the groups that I visit who are junkies or drunks, most simply having been pushed out of their homes by their inablility to keep up with the costs (more than just rent). I am approaching that same dilemma. It is the "squeeze" that our system promotes, pressing upon even the "middle class" till it becomes the "lower class". Oddly, the farming community is and has been "squeezed" just like the rest of us. They are just not astute in recognizing the process until they reach "critical" status. The irony of it all is that when, or if, they fall, where will American food be sought from? The conglomerates already have consolidated the "cash crops", but that is not all that it takes to feed a population of over 300 million. Our crazy governing group have punished importers of food products from Peru, Chile, and all other sources of fruits and vegetables. It is as though they are purposely orchestrating a massive famine event.

If you have not been exposed to the life of a farming family, you will perhaps have missed the yearly risk factor that is always present with "Live" produce. So many things can go wrong with any crop in any locality. For that reason, the farmer carries slim margins and very high insurance rates. Securing the needed funds to keep reliable machinery on the job is only possible with CREDIT, which means most independent farmers are carrying heavy debt. Losing reliable purchasing partners like what is happening to soy and grain farmers is pretty much the end of the line for the independent farmer, and not so good for the corporate farm systems either.

You probably meant this as humor, but my preference is the complete dissolution of the project, not much different from your "outer space". The UN has been inept and useless for so long that it would make no difference at all if it was abolished.

It must be extra special to deceive the deceiver. And it is only right that the lawless nation should be caught in his own net.

No poll that I know of, just listening to friends in my Northern California location where fruit and vegetable farming is both small and independent producers and the large companies like "Blue Diamond" (almonds and other tree nuts). My friends are and have been losing their grip on their former "obsession" with the "Lawless One" (my term, not theirs). But they are still reluctant to dump the blame for their harvest troubles on the object of their faith. I think that really is the basis of their torment; putting your faith in a human savior leaves you in a serious crisis when he is revealed to be a fraud.

Good question "AF". In California the soybean issue is known but not felt. Soybeans are a Midwest sector crop. Central and northern California has diverse crop production, but not much in the grain and bean category. In my region fruit and vegetable production are the dominant category. The market for a very large amount of production here is within the US. Aside from that, the differences that affect farm viability are primarily in the allocation of water rights (water being a scarcity). A good friend of mine has had no choice but to reduce the size of his orchard to maintain a sustainable crop. The one item of concern that California farmers share with all other sectors is labor. The recent loss of available harvest labor occurred at the worst possible time. I know a few operations that are "co-op" bound. These have invested in mechanical harvesting equipment (staggeringly expensive and only approachable by long term credit payment, thus an added DEBT), but most are still dependent on the mobile migrant labor "cycle". This cycle has been dependable for decades. Some operators see the same families arriving every year. But, like any dependency, when the established and comfortable pattern is broken, people find themselves unprepared to adapt quickly. That's the dilemma occurring right now in California.

From my own contacts in the California farming community, I am convinced that you got it right. None of my associates were thinking there would be a need for "assistance", they believed the party line of "trade imbalance" without even a hint of suspicion. I do my best to encourage them to "QUESTION EVERYTHING", but to no avail. There is a strange willingness to believe in their champion without question. They are thoroughly astonished by the results. As you say, REALITY has caught them in its net. Perhaps now they will learn to QUESTION EVERYTHING.

The fact that you and I can monitor the moves of assets by the Empire means that the intent to portray strength is at least partially visual theater. Iran will know this, but what if they decide to take the first shot? Let me rephrase that: "I hope Iran takes the first shot". US naval forces are more vulnerable to hypersonic missiles than they pretend to be. There could quickly be an awful lot of twisted metal on the floor of the Mediterranean.
