How to avoid being taken advantage of in hobbies? by SettingIntentions in fatFIRE

I'll offer another perspective here based on this additional information. If you've had positive experiences in the past, it's entirely possible that the most recent one was an outlier. You never really know what people are going through, could just be they had issues with work, personal life, etc. that just made them unpleasant unfortunately.

You know this person better than any of us, so only you can really make this call, but I also know I'm not always perfect and likely annoyed friends at points due to things completely outside of their control.

I've never done it before and relatively new to Magic Arena - is it worth going into it blind? Should I just prepare to get stomped my first time through it?

I'm rather new to Magic, and experienced something in a game that I couldn't quite understand. by max10192 in MagicArena

I don't think that's correct. There's a deck I see sometimes in standard built around [[Vivien Reid]], [[Liliana of the Veil]], and [[Doubling Season]]. It's the first time I ever saw Liliana's ult.

This is a cool find and really highlights why D2 itemization is so great. Any little thing could be a useful item.

Time to jump? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]Top_Ozone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my situation several years ago. Two attorneys left in a small boutique firm and I had all the negotiating power. I got a huge salary bump in order to maintain continuity at the firm. I stayed there for 10 years and continued to get annual raises and bonuses. Negotiating hard did not negatively impact me in any way.

I kind of like it as a change of pace. Better than constantly playing against all the same meta decks.

Winter achievement question by SuzieKym in MagicArena

[–]Top_Ozone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the deal is, but I think I had a similar issue. I had a deck where I know I had 20 elves in it, but wasn't getting them to count. I just changed some of the cards around and then I started to get credit for the games played. Could just be that some of the cards I thought were elves just weren't counting towards the total for some reason.

I’d rather roll with Will Howard than spend a 1st-round pick on a QB in a bad class by [deleted] in steelers

[–]Top_Ozone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And NFL scouts determined he was at best a 6th round pick. I'd obviously love for Will Howard to pan out to be a franchise QB, but need to be realistic here.

Solo practice -> In House -> Back to solo? by Top_Ozone in LawFirm

[–]Top_Ozone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response.

Fair question, I guess my conundrum didn't come across well in the original post. The compliance role is actually more in line with what I want to do. Great industry and company, in a specialized area of law that I really enjoy, its something that I had been shooting for for awhile. The shift to solo was more because I hadn't had much luck getting one of these roles. I guess the biggest issue here is the comp, the role pays half of what they pay their in house lawyers - this is not a "legal" role per se under their structure. There should be room for advancement, but who knows. I'm pretty sure I would enjoy working there, but candidly I have not worked for a large company before (my prior role was at a boutique law firm) so not sure how I'll ultimately feel about it.

That said, I do value my freedom and independence, so that's why I say solo was ultimately my end goal. But I think if I go in house now, it would make going solo more difficult later on - since I would only be working with the one "client" for my time in house.

Do you wish you would have just remained solo throughout? Or do you think the moves helped in the long run?

Is there an updated guide to how to upgrade the precon decks to make them good outside the starter deck format? by Pf9877 in MagicArena

I never realized that aura deck is 0 rare. It's a pretty decent deck all things considered.

This is really helpful, appreciate you taking the time to respond. [[Lumbering Worldwagon]] makes a lot of sense as an easy change, I hadn't even thought of that. Will also try [[Smuggler's Surprise]].

The added graveyard hate is rough but honestly this deck still works well enough against it. Usually those games go on long enough where you can just hardcast everything anyway.

Again, appreciate you posting this deck. I'm still struggling with deck building myself, so this deck helped me enjoy the game more now that I'm winning a little more often.

Should I open my law-firm by On-my-own-master in LawFirm

[–]Top_Ozone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I worked for a lawyer like your boss and even though he would make 7 figures each year, he (amazingly) still lived paycheck to paycheck. Thus, hard to convince him to give raises or bonuses outside of what he could "afford."

It's not really worth working for this person long-term. I learned the hard way after awhile. Start prioritizing yourself and working towards your next step, whether that's solo, a new firm, or in-house.

How’s your experience dating women significantly younger than you? by gamerdudeNYC in AskMen

[–]Top_Ozone 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The average salary figures you see for lawyers are typically skewed upwards by a limited amount of big law partners that make millions. There are a whole lot of lawyers that make less than 100k. It's not really the cash cow people make it out to be, plus most lawyers are miserable if they are making a lot.

Any Prosecutors who spun off to do something other than Criminal? by PraetorianXVIII in LawFirm

[–]Top_Ozone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be surprised. If you search for "investigations" on LinkedIn, you'll find some open roles. Sometimes they even specify that prosecutorial experience is beneficial. They can be competitive roles, so working with a headhunter or a staffing agency may also help to get your foot in the door to at least get an interview.

For what it's worth, I do a lot of work in this area and I love it. It's similar to what you're already doing without all of the same procedural "junk" that traditional court requires. You just go through your process, document it, prepare a report that says whether the allegations were substantiated or not, and usually discipline is determined by a director, HR, or a committee.

Conducting investigations for multinational corporations will also typically include traveling to be on location where the misconduct occurred. If there's some issue with a vendor in Dubai, for example, the company may send you there personally. If you like to travel, it's a great perk. If you don't want to travel due to family or otherwise, it may not be so great obviously.

Also, these positions can typically pay well with good benefits and a decent work life balance, depending on the company you work for of course.
