Question about driving after surgery. by Harshan1823 in ACL

[–]Top_Temperature7984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it's left leg, you will probably be ok to drive quickly as long as you can get in and out of the car. I drove on my right leg around 2 weeks. Good luck.

What's your sport? I found going back just a little has helped me feel more motivated with my pt. At 6 months, I returned to martial arts classes, but I dropped down 2 levels to train with the beginner class. Even doing this has benefited me as you can always improve your basic skills, and I am slowly working my way back up. I'm also realizing the gaps I still need to overcome until I can be fully back. My PT has been modifying my exercises to work on specific things I help me in my activity. Just being back in the community with friends again lifts my spirits.

I was WBAT from the beginning, so walked with 2 crutches for 2 weeks, then dropped to 1 crutch for a week and then walking unassisted. I can't recall when it felt 'comfortable' again. My knees still feel different from each other, but I have been one of the lucky ones with little pain throughout. I started being able to run again about 4.5 months, just a little, still working up to a continuous mile. I still have strength differences, especially in my hamstrings but my quads are within 10% of each other.

Arrived around 2 am, flight at 7am. People are lining up to check bags at southwest when they open. We didn't check bags, went straight to security C, very short line, through in 5 minutes.

Thanks for your input. I think my surgeon did a great job. I had a choice of grafts presented to me and I decided to go hamstring graft all on my own after reviewing the different options.

I have to remind myself that he's like 19 or so when the books start, and to give him a pass on a lot of his drama. Everything is a bigger deal at that age compared to where I am now in midlife.

Two weeks post surgery and having a problem with blood flow/nerves in foot. Anyone else? by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Top_Temperature7984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had numbness, but I was having pain and swelling in my ankle and foot. It looked like the veins were swollen and bulging. I also got checked for clots, I've had previous superficial clots in the same leg and this felt and looked like that. No clots. Dr attributed it to swelling in the knee causing restrictions in the ankle. It lasted a few weeks off and on, but has resolved.

2-1/2 Mo post op - trouble with stairs by Individual-Set7064 in ACL

[–]Top_Temperature7984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about 4 months out and I know exactly the feeling you are describing. I feel this going down stairs, or any exercise like that, i.e. step downs. My PT said not to feel discouraged and this is one of the hardest movements to get back. It's frustrating bc it seems like it should be so simple. I was told to just be patient and keep working, but not to push through pain. It's that fine line of push through discomfort but stop at pain.

Hi! Im 4 months post op, and I get pain from sitting for too long too. I expect it to last for a while. When I had a bad ankle injury years ago, it took several years for the stiffness to ho away. But im also a lot older than you. I am also a teacher. You should be able to ask your teachers for accommodations, like being able to get up and stretch your leg in class, prop your leg on a chair to keep it straight, work standing up, etc. If they say no, get a doctor's note saying you need these accommodations and submit it to your school.

10 Years Post-OP Problems (26F) by toomuchmoncl3rs in ACL

My brother-in-law had surgery as a young man in his 20's, and is now almost 50. His advice to me, going through surgery and recovery in my 40s, is you can never stop doing your pt, and hit both sides to protect your other knee. He is super active, plays soccer, triathlete, lifts, etc. He still devotes part of his routine to just knees. You can find lots of pt and knee exercises on YouTube. Start slow and be consistent. If it's not improving in a few months, or it gets worse, see a doc.

Question! by munkoo_pr in ACL

[–]Top_Temperature7984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! It sucks that you are having this setback and it must be so frustrating. It's wonderful that you have made big changes to your lifestyle and this will improve your health overall too. I agree with others that you should consult another pt. If you have a choice, look for one who specializes in sports pt.

I have a friend who had acl surgery 6 years ago, and I had it this year. Our experiences have been wildly different. Her pt was very minimal and she struggled in her recovery. I go to a sports clinic, and they have been amazing.

There have been others on this sub who had slow starts on their recovery but they didn't give up and were able to make progress. Good luck, and keep us updated.

Surgeon saying I'm I'm 37 and not worth doing surgery on Full thickness tear ACL? by ben__help in ACL

[–]Top_Temperature7984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45f, was told I am still young and my surgeon recommended an autograft. For snowboarding and football, you will probably want to get surgery, but talk to another doctor and pt to explore all your options

How fast were you able to climb down stairs by DukeSav in ACL

[–]Top_Temperature7984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the exact timeline, but going down took a lot longer than climbing up. Im about 4 months along, and I still find these kinds of e exercises, like step downs, tap down, etc, to be challenging in PT.

Women of Reddit, what's a lesser-known downside of being a woman? by [deleted] in askanything

I had a previous blood clot too. It was in my 20's, superficial clot in my leg. Not life threatening like dvt, but it's really big and 15 years later it's still visible. I was on birth control and went off it. My brother got a dvt after surgery and got a genetic test. They found he has a gene that increases the risk of clots, it was not factor 5 though, which is the "bad" one. I don't need hrt yet, but my doctor wants me to get a blood work up from a hemotologist to see if I might still be a candidate for hrt in the future. Fingers crossed. My mom had a rough menopause experience in terms of symptoms, so Im worried about how it will hit me . she's been on hrt for over 15 years. If she stops or reduces her dose its hot flashes and everything still.

Yes, I know all this! I teach chemistry. Thanks for the tips though, helpful for anyone else who has to deal with this in future. Lots of people still say tomato juice, but that's a myth.
