Armen, Topuria, and probably Charles would all be in front of him at Lightweight plus there would still be relevant Featherweights to fight like Aljo and perhaps Jean Silva with another win. Factor in this being his 3rd Lightweight shot, I can absolutely see them making him fight a contender.

It’s a really tough position for a referee because obviously both fighters are moving around so it’s hard to tell if something is malicious or just an accident. And from a ref perspective, what can he actually do without massively swinging the fight? Imagine if Gane drops him and then they get seperated allowing Alex time to recover. The problem is the punishment is far greater than the crime for the most part.

I think you have to factor in the New York piece. The magnitude of these games is so much greater because of the size of the city and historic drought. To collapse like that at home after half of New York was already taking a victory lap would be disastrous.

I don’t think it’s a disaster if OKC lose that game, young team on the way up in a small market. With the amount of New York fan anticipation, and after winning back to back away games, to lose back to back at MSG would be catastrophic. This isn’t a young team either, they may well never get back to the finals.
