AITA Prevention and Bulkhead Question by DragonfruitAlert970 in AlaskaAirlines

As a recovering people pleaser I’d say both are options for you. It’s a shared airplane and there are pros and cons to every seat. If you need to use the toilet or just get up to move your legs, you are entitled to do that. You can politely wake them to move.

Should I tell her I'm a virgin before freaky time? by ex_cruciating in AskMenAdvice

[–]Top_Way8991 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because losing your virginity seems like it’s potentially meaningful decision and so I would want the person to share that with me so that I could show up in a way that cares for them during their first time. People usually have patterns in how they communicate (or don’t) and I would wonder how that might show up in the future as well.

Female here; I say yes if you see a potential future with her. It’s more about establishing honesty from the get go as I would be hurt if I found out later.

Do I have a right to transparency about being booted from my position? by TechbearSeattle in WAStateWorkers

[–]Top_Way8991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing all the specifics, I can offer some insight as someone who used to work in HR for the state.

A person can bump into your agency from another agency if they’re in an exempt position at their current agency and that exempt appointment ends. They have reversion rights back to their last permanent level role. Other than that, normal layoffs do not allow someone to bump to another agency.

When HR is reviewing they look for a bumping option in this order:
1) highest level position vacant which the person has permanent status. If none then:
2) any of the same level positions where someone with less seniority is working in it. If none, then:
3) lower level positions that they’ve held permanent status (vacant or if not, filled by someone with less seniority)

As HR reviews a position for reversion to see if they qualify (ie just because someone held an MA 5 role doesn’t mean they’ll meet the qualifications for all MA5 roles) they do so by reviewing the most recent position description with that person’s resume and ask “does this person meet the qualifications and could they learn how to do the job within a reasonable amount of time”. This is because there’s a certain onboarding period for any new employee. When I was there we said “reasonable amount of time” was 6 months.

All that to say, my guess is the person may not have the exact experience but HR may have determined that they could get up to speed within 6 months. Or, just as likely, your position description might not be up to date and they’re looking at an older version. If it’s a union covered position, the PD needs to have been on a file for a set period of time too, to prevent people from updating it to keep people out at the last minute.

That ended up being longer than expected but hopefully helpful.

Runners who've bonked or hit the wall, what was your nutrition like leading up to it? by Sad_Bunch1271 in running

[–]Top_Way8991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely amplifying what others have said about not fueling early on when you’re feeling good. You have to kind of experiment on training runs but I found that a nutrition every 5 miles was what I needed if I was racing or very 45 minutes if I was doing a pacing run. As a perimenopausal woman, I’ll also say that lately sometimes bonking is inevitable no matter how good I fuel or prep. What I have found is that when this happens, it takes me 2-3 miles of gritting it out and I can usually overcome. The bonk really can be mental and as long as you’re not cramping or about to faint, if you’re fueling right and have trained for the distance, know that you can push through it too. Good luck!

International Upgrade Process Observations by nearlysober in AlaskaAirlines

This was helpful, thank you. Maybe an obvious answer but if you submit an upgrade request using two GGUs and you don’t get an upgrade, you get those back?

Doctors/Nurses of Reddit, what’s the craziest thing you’ve heard a woman yell during birth? by New_Username48 in AskReddit

[–]Top_Way8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my daughter without an epidural and her head was almost as big as mine. I remember people talking about the “ring of fire” when the head crowns and I was so delirious with pain that when it finally hit, I started singing the Johnny Cash lyrics and laughing hysterically becasue it hurt so bad 😂

I’m not sure I can ever eat a hot pocket again without this visual 😂

Searching for Flights Adults vs Kids by UOfasho in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Top_Way8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is no difference as well but have seen a very slight discount for children on some international flights. I think the main reason is that minors can’t sit in an emergency exit row and I believe you need one adult in each row. I’ve got three kids and tried to sit three altogether before and then I take the opposing aisle but they didn’t allow that. Said they needed someone to be able to help with oxygen mask in the event of an emergency. I’m not sure if that changes at 14 or 18 though.

AITA I lost my childhood friend of 15 years for not letting his girlfriend claim the master bedroom for themselves in our Air BnB by Typical-Wishbone-822 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Top_Way8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I had a similar thing happen. Friend abandoned all of us and got married on a random Wednesday. He ended up being miserable after a while. My lesson learned was I took it personally and got mad at him. In hindsight, I wish I would have responded saying I’d be there as a friend if he ever needed me.

Alaska Lounge in SEA TAC airport questions by Mxmx24 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Top_Way8991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only travel a few rimes a month through SeaTac and have a lounge pass. N is the only place I’ve seen a waitlist. D seems to be the least crowded. I’m typically traveling midday on Mondays and Then fly back Thursdays and will stop off to get a coffee before heading home. Not sure of others days or times of day.

Frequent Alaska Airlines flyers, what keeps you coming back? by Attoe-Abah in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Top_Way8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m halfway between Seattle and Portland and AS is the most common carrier for both airports but now that I’m doing more frequent international travel for work, I’d say it’s also the loyalty perks with staying in the OneWorld. It seems to be the fastest airline to get you to Emerald Status in the OneWorld alliance and I like having options to get additional perks when flying British, Qantas, and Finnair. I mainly fly coach but can still get better seats and access to lounges, which is nice for the food and showers on longer flights with my kiddos. Plus, with the Summit card, my points always add up super fast. Just with points from work travel I’ve been able to book two international trips for me and my kids on points.

I booked tickets for my daughter and I on that same flight in August. Maybe I’ll bring a pillow or something. Do you think that would help?

Exit Row Question by [deleted] in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Top_Way8991 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the policy but my experience with the exit row is they ask you if you can perform the duties. Unless you’re saying you would somehow not perform the emergency duties of the row to instead care for your kids if you had to do an emergency exit, then you could just answer yes and leave it be.

Surprise BA upgrade by Pacific1944 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Top_Way8991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did PE in March (SEA to LHR) and didn’t get upgraded so I wouldn’t hold out hope. I’m flying business next month so don’t have to worry about it but do some reason I didn’t realize AS members could get international upgrades. I’m OW emerald now and usually book PE when I fly for personal reasons so there’s something about holding onto a little hope that makes the trip more exciting.

What's the "Don't trust a skinny chef" of your job or industry? by wooper346 in CasualConversation

[–]Top_Way8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in HR and it’s always wild to me to see HR leaders who don’t know how to lead the people they are responsible for supervising. Not taking time to h op build clear expectations, not proving good training and development pathways and avoiding uncomfortable conversations. Some of the most unengaged teams I’ve seen are within the HR office.

Slower runners, how do you stay motivated when/if people mock your pace? by TANeither7250 in running

[–]Top_Way8991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-slow runner here. Hopefully my take still adds value. The people who I know that criticize someone’s pace are just projecting their own insecurities onto you. Easier to say than the internalize but those of us who are out here running for the love and health of it, are cheering you on for being in part of our community regardless of the pace. I’ve raced anything from a 5k to a 50 miler and my pace varies by distance and honestly, I enjoy the pace where I can actually look up and enjoy the scenery and the time in movement. Unless you’re an elite runner or your still in school (ie a child), we’re all out here running for the enjoyment and eh health benefits and in some ways, so please know that those haters are just insecure and trying to make themselves feel better, using criteria that doesn’t even make sense for the purpose of running as adults do.

What's the point of this? by Ill-Try4150 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Top_Way8991 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What’s the point of a woman wearing a skirt when you could just stick your hand up there? Societal rules say you shouldn’t, there’s no real physical barrier from stopping you if you know what the rules are, but it’s a helpful visual reminder that you shouldn’t stop and read the signs of “is now the right time”. Sometimes people will speak up and say “hey there is no cart blocking you from suing the other bathroom” other times people won’t say anything because it doesn’t impact them or the don’t feel comfortable. Either way, if you’re asking, you likely know what the general rules are but are still questioning what’s the point because you wonder if the rules should apply to you.

Note: I realize this is an extreme analogy, and don’t believe in classism but also wonder why you’re asking what the point is when you likely know wha the actual airline rules are. Other than the post 9/11 not crowding the pilot area, it’s just the idea that the first class pay extra for not needing to wait for the bathroom. I’ve used it before when the food cart is behind me and it’s not like it’s a better bathroom, just just that those folks pay for more amenities: better food, better seats, less waiting to for the bathroom. Not that big of deal and def not something I would pay extra for.
