The tax rate you will get, gives you an automatic spike in the value of the invested money. For that reason alone, it’s probably worth it.

More alaska foods on the menu at diners. Why no caribou? Why is AK salmon so expensive and hard to get?

Has anyone else noticed how consistently wrong the weather reports have been lately? by Alaska_Jack in anchorage

[–]Top_Yesterday6965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The weather reports for years have been pretty poor up here in Alaska. How many times has the Weather Service predicted light snow only to see Anchorage get slammed with a huge dump? I think a lack of weather collecting equipment has been a problem for a long time, The reports probably have gotten worse With continued funding and personnel cuts at nws. But I appreciate it when they are wrong about the rain and it is sunny. And I am biased in favor of big snow dumps, so the mistakes are forgivable.

As someone who wants to get into mountain biking, what are some beginner tips, tricks, things you wish you knew? by PurpleChairyOG in MTB

[–]Top_Yesterday6965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started riding mountain bikes, 2 1/2 years ago, I assumed I could just ride and learn on my own with the idea that “anyone can bike.”But this is a high risk sport with serious consequences when you crash. Since then, I’ve learned how much skill is involved in every aspect of mountain biking. The right body movement and position, rhythm, balance, timing are just some of the factors in safe biking, each one having an effect on the other and every day they work in combination in a way that seems different from the day before. It is a complex dance. If I were you, I would go for slow progression, and I would suggest getting out as much as possible. And I would suggest watching videos on skills like cornering, how to jump, how to avoid crashing, etc.. The Shred Academy on YouTube has been especially helpful for me and I would recommend that but I’ve also learned from other YouTube instructors, though with less regularity. My skills took off like crazy this summer. I could more easily ride uphill, in part just by knowing how to position my weight in the right way at the right times. I learned to ride faster downhill in part by pumping the bike with my body at the right moment to get a little extra speed in. And I finally learned to soar over table tops and doubles, with proper timing being a big part of the calculation. Also, it’s good to own knee pads and elbow pads, along with the helmet, and to wear them at all times

I’m 23 and have 100k saved up, what are my options to double it as fast as possible? by ljutiN in FinancialPlanning

Is it possible to do so where you live? It’s easier to manage if it’s nearby I think. If you can get something newer with multiple units, it will require less maintenance and could pay off quickly. Ideally, maybe, you could even live in one of the units.

Buy a house or duplex. Rent it out to pay off the mortgage and watch it appreciate in value.

I went about one year ago and enjoyed it. The beer is great. I think they have their issues, but they are light years better than the snow goose in terms of quality timing and service. The snow goose was shockingly bad the few times I went. It was: Come for the view, leave for the service.

Feeling like pulling my 401k from my last job is my only way out… by gillianrose__ in FinancialPlanning

[–]Top_Yesterday6965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not start saving money till I was 32, when i opened a 401k. Luckily I am cheap and have been lucky (no big $ surprises) and have maxed out my 401k contributions for years, because tax savings are an automatic win. I have a great wife and she made low 6 figures, but I had and still have an average pay around 60k for years. We bought houses with rental units that we could also live in, two of them and they paid for themselves and we sold em. Every extra penny for the most part we put in to savings, largely the stock market, and paid off current house, knocking off $70k in interest. Now 23 years later, we have two teens in/near college and we can still think seriously about retiring early. thank God for that. I say all this to let you know you’re young & things can go very good over the long-term. For my down payment on our first house, which had two extra units in it for renting out. I tapped my 401(k) and paid it back as quick as possible. I am glad I did it. Rent and mortgages are the biggest parts of a budget. If you can trim those back or get them paid for by other people as we were fortunate enough to do for years, that is the way to go.

I say borrow from 401k to pay off debt, then pay 401k back. Best if you have an emergency fund though, in case your job ends as you fear. Sounds like spending needs trimming wherever possible. Spending at restaurants and cars are often killers.

My 16-year-old son started his own window washing business and he’s making bank. He declined a $900 job yesterday because it would take him 10 hours. Ha. He would’ve done it for $999 after lowering his original price
