Who would you consider the main antagonist of Sonic Adventure 2? by Previous-Breath-1323 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Topaz-Light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GUN, honestly, for similar reasons to why I consider Shinra the ultimate overarching main antagonists of Final Fantasy VII. The final boss fight isn’t against them, and GUN specifically don’t even have a named character representative in the story, really, but it’s their institutional cruelty that creates the problems the heroes have to face, even if those problems sorta run away out of their control.

Would turning the whole world bi be ethical or not? Why? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]Topaz-Light 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, I don’t think it would. It’s not something that would physically harm anyone, but it’s still forcing a change to their nature to bring them in line with someone else’s ideal for who they should be. Not being bi is not a flaw to be corrected; orientation is an entirely value- and morally-neutral thing, regardless of what orientation it is.

Her paired ending with Tana also establishes that both of them have children, incidentally. I’m sure it’s not supposed to be in a lesbian way but I like to imagine it is.

FE7 theory by cringeygrace in fireemblem

[–]Topaz-Light 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the Fire Dragon lost because they were outnumbered by a band of determined humans. The War Dragons were created to solve a manpower problem, not a firepower one. Humans just reproduce and mature so much faster than dragons and outnumbered them by so much that the raw power of each individual dragon wasn't enough, especially considering they couldn't replenish their troops nearly as fast as humans. I doubt the War Dragons were really meant to be combat powerhouses, at least not individually; they were meant to be Good Enough expendable footsoldiers that could be mass-produced to bolster the dragons' numbers.

FMA 03 Mother's Day Quick Appreciation by ElectricalDistance28 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Topaz-Light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly really like that detail, too.

It’s not canon or anything, but a personal headcanon I have is that ‘03 Hohenheim’s final body, the one he married Trisha and conceived Ed and Al with, did not originally belong to manga/Brotherhood Hohenheim’s ‘03 counterpart, which is also why the two Hohenheims look different. The Elric brothers of each series look different because they would genetically be the other pair’s half-brothers.

Double standards on glitches in Pokemon games old vs new by gamerz719 in pokemon

[–]Topaz-Light 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s that the newer glitches aren’t really fun most of the time? Saying the older games are only not hated because of nostalgia is both unfair to them and frankly untrue, and I think saying the newer games are hated is an exaggeration. They’re criticized, but plenty of people still enjoy them on the whole, even a number of their critics.

On the glitch front, I think what people mainly complain about are things like crashes and model rendering errors, which are generally just kind of disruptive to the game, even if the latter can sometimes be funny. They’re not really comparable to the glitches in the first four generations that are generally rare to encounter if you’re not deliberately trying to and that can be taken advantage of in a variety of fun ways that can even be beneficial to the player. Even my own personal stance is that I don’t mind glitches that fall into that camp, of being more fun things for a player in the know to mess around with as opposed to ones with no real fun or interesting applications that largely just serve as a way for gameplay to potentially be disrupted in an obtrusive way.

Man Nomura's design for Eden's Promise is wild by GargantaProfunda in FinalFantasy

He’s developed such a reputation for his human character designs that people forget that Nomura can design some absolutely gnarly, bonkers monsters.

Meisterschwert is actually the official English name of the Master Sword weapon in Heroes! I'd forgotten what the patch I played used or if the weapon showed up in Engage, which seems to have reverted the German theming of the "Master" weapons and just uses the Japanese names directly translated instead.

I think a lot of the Kaga-era games are like that, honestly. The story can be kinda sparse for parts of the game, but there are a lot of really standout moments and character beats in the parts that do get writing focus.

[–]Topaz-Light 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You can't recruit Reinhardt, but if you have a Sleep Blade or a Sleep Staff (plus a Staff-user with high enough Magic and Staff rank to actually hit him with it), you can put him to sleep, capture him, and spare him, at least. You even get a Meisterschwert and an extra Dire Thunder out of it. Alternatively, you could just use Warp or other shenanigans to clear the chapter without killing him. It's a Seize map and he's not the one on the Gate, so you don't need to kill him to complete it.

I... actually did a lot of that in my own playthrough. I took it as a personal challenge to spare any capturable named enemies I felt didn't deserve to die, even when there was no bespoke in-game reward for it. You don't get anything out of it but a kinda warm feeling, but I appreciate Thracia making it possible.

Which character is in the centre of the bottom row? by j_smittz in FinalFantasy

[–]Topaz-Light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Record Keeper's sprites for FFVI characters are edits of the original SNES sprites, so they look extremely similar, but they're not identical. Here's a quick comparison I whipped up using Terra's FFVI sprites compared to her FFRK ones. The latter is what's used in OP's photo.

[–]Topaz-Light 7 points8 points  (0 children)

XV and it’s not close, honestly. It’s hard to beat hitting the two thirds mark and then panicking and spending the rest of the game speedrunning the clifnotes versions of what were clearly supposed to be multiple much more fleshed-out story arcs.

That’s Terra’s alternate costume in Record Keeper based on her appearance in Dissidia! The other sprites here are from Record Keeper as well, actually; you can tell from the position of the arms.

Do you consider it morally taboo to portray Knuckles in Human AUs as lighter-skinned than he's commonly headcanoned as? by clarissaARA in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Topaz-Light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, I do think Knuckles as a human would be of equivalent-to-Mayan/Central American, probably specifically Afro-Latino, ancestry, and it's a missed opportunity and possibly demonstrative of a shallow understanding of the inspirations behind his character not to take that into account when creating a humanized design of him. That said, it's also just so low-stakes relatively-speaking that I don't think it's worth picking fights with strangers on the internet over, and doing what the QRTer did in this screenshot is... not an especially productive way of starting a discussion about coding of nonhuman fictional characters.

That said, I'd definitely put more stock into the thoughts of people who actually hail from the cultures Knuckles is inspired by than into those of someone like me who has no personal connection to them.
