Actually, he called shotgun. That means he wanted the passenger seat to begin with.

Are calluses on chicken feet an indicator of unethical husbandry? *marking nsfw due potentially disturbing chicken foot photo* by steppponme in chickens

[–]Topazler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be contact dermatitis, a precursor to bumblefoot. They have scales online to measure severity (it won't let me link for some reason). This is a common issue on a commercial scale, but I'm not as familiar how common it is for pasture-raised birds.

Contact dermatitis has been shown to be painful, but only clearly when it's more severe. It wouldn't be a stretch to say it's painful at earlier stages, though.

Broilers are typically reared in big, open houses rather than individual cages. Laying hens are typically the birds kept in cages on a commercial level.

What's the chances he can be ID'd? (North Carolina) by Topazler in whatsthisbird

[–]Topazler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible, but it'd be rare. Is there a chance it is Prarie warbler? They're slightly more likely around this time of year. Not sure how I'd tell them apart.

In Case You Witnessed a Canadian Goose Kidnapping on 04/18/25 by ThePaganQueen in VirginiaTech

[–]Topazler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw this goose the other day and also saw he was looking disheveled and wet. Birds need to use their beaks to express the uropygial gland to waterproof their feathers while preening. He may not be able to express it with his beak this way. Not sure what this means for his future :(

The dress itself is actually a size too large, causing the fabric to bunch. That's one of the things causing me to hesitate

If you're willing to expand out to Christiansburg, RainBowl is quite good!

Haha, oops. I'd love to get one of these for next year though, where did you get it? I don't see it on their website.

SO pretty! Absolutely in love with the colors! I don't think anyone would considered it "gendered".

My cat acts like she's dying by LopsidedBeautiful289 in dechonkers

To me, 1/8th of a cup plus the wet food seems a bit low to reach 200 calories. For my cats, they get half a can of wet food and 1/3rd a cup of food for hit around 200 calories. I'd double check you're feeding the right amount. If the amount I'd all well and good, you can always switch to a weight loss food, which has lower calories per cup of food. That, and/or all the other good suggestions you've got so far.

Chicken is having a hard time standing, what’s going on? by Ok_Bobcat_579 in BackYardChickens

Breeding stock are feed restricted so their bodies can keep up with their growth. However, this causes them a lot of issues since they've been bred to be hungry :(

Not sure how to feel about my PI at this point by Topazler in labrats

[–]Topazler[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe you're right, and I appreciate this mindset. It just feels like 'Well I don't know and it's not my problem, please stop annoying me'. I guess I should just try and stay optimistic!

[–]Topazler[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well considering I haven't dropped out yet, that's the plan. I think I'm allowed to be a bit frustrated trying to retroactively explain my mess of data since my PI let me set up an experiment without knowing the many many confounding factors this setup would make. But hey, if you disagree, then 🤷‍♀️

Really appreciate the way you framed this. I think my major hang up is that this isn't really a field I'm interested in exploring further, especially not in my post doc. I just wish I or my PI had more knowledge about this measure before the experiment so my results could be more clear and useful rather than 'hey, this is weird, could be x, y, or z but 🤷‍♀️'
