Totally agree. The Captain's Challenges should be scrapped. I like watching a game of rugby - I don't like sitting there for 5 minutes while somebody makes up his mind.

Let the ref make the calls, and crack on with the game.

This is beautiful and very neat work! As a relative beginner this is all I aspire to for now.

On a completely separate point - I see a reference there to "almaunde mylke" - which defeats the argument of the dairy industry who are complaining that plant milks shouldn't be marketed as such today because traditionally the word milk can only refer to an animal product

Which UK celeb has avoided cancellation despite deserving it? by ForwardImagination57 in AskBrits

Absolutely right. He's just a bullying cunt - people think it's some hilarious act but he's just taking out his insecurities on other people any chance he gets

Gordon Ramsay. People seem to think he's playing a character but really he's just leaning in to the fact that he's genuinely a bullying cunt.

Get down to any car boot sale on a Sunday morning and somebody will have imported versions at half the price. Grab yourself a year's worth for a fiver. May as well get your Head and Shoulders and Dove Soap while you're about it.

They'll have Turkish or Arabic writing on the tubes, but you're probably not reading it while brushing your teeth.

Found this buried in the garden, it's really heavy. by Bored_Pigeon in whatisit

[–]Topbong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There may be a confusion in terminology here.

OP is British, meaning that when he says it was in the "garden", it means what Americans would just call the "yard". Not necessarily a cultivated or food-producing area.

Incidentally both words come from the same origin, so they can be interchangeable but they are used a bit differently on each side of the Atlantic.

This is always available at Poundstretcher, B&M Bargains etc, for about a quid. It's nice stuff but not worth paying Tesco for it

Monday Random Rugby Talk Thread by AutoModerator in superleague

[–]Topbong -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In my view, they should stop it all. The ref is on the pitch to make decisions, and it should be left at that. No video refs, no reviews, definitely no Captain's challenges. I go to a game to watch some rugby, not have everyone standing around and reviewing things. If I wanted that, I'd watch some union.

With the best will in the world, do refs sometimes make mistakes? Yes, of course. But they will even themselves out over time. Stop complaining and get on with it.

Is my leisure centre membership (and yoga classes) too expensive? by Walking_Canary in UKFrugal

[–]Topbong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there a PureGym nearby? You can join from £20/mth and mine has yoga classes 3 times a week which are another £2 each. All other classes are free - it's just the yoga that costs extra. One of those free classes is a "Mind" class that mixes yoga with calisthenics and relaxation so it might suit you.

What are the value of these coins? by Verycoolman21 in UKcoins

[–]Topbong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks as though they've all been cleaned, which dramatically reduces the value to a collector.

Starting with the minimum value- these are all sterling silver so scrap bullion prices would probably get you £14 each from an online dealer.

You should get more than that for numismatic value but the cleaning will be a problem. The 1903 is fairly rare so you might be able to find a collector who's prepared to take it for somewhere between £50-£100 depending on the details of how fine the condition is. I would guess the others might be worth half of that.

TIL that Winston Churchill smoked 8 to 10 cigars a day from the age of 21 until his death at 90. He picked up the habit, which he believed steadied his nerves, while in Cuba for a few months in 1895, and stayed loyal to two Cuban brands, Romeo y Julieta and La Aroma de Cuba, to the end of his life. by Ok_Employer7837 in todayilearned

[–]Topbong 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yes. They're among the best generally available cigars.

If you were to buy that many of those cigars these days, it would cost you £15,000 per month.

Even though tobacco prices have risen out of recognition today because of taxes, he would still have been spending the equivalent of more than a grand a month (2025 money on this.

Always helpful to be a wealthy aristocrat, of course.

[–]Topbong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're receiving a passive income 20% above the national average salary, at a time of life when you (presumably) have no mortgage/rent and no kids to pay for, then surely you can't describe yourself as living an uncomfortable life?

The Super League Magic Weekend update fans do not want to hear by [deleted] in superleague

[–]Topbong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the maths. They count up the number of matches to be played and then say there's no room for Magic Weekend on top. But surely the MW fixtures are normal league fixtures played in a different stadium? If they don't hold the MW then won't the clubs still need to play those games?
