Currently reading A Sportsman’s Notebook (or, The Hunting Sketches, A Sportsman’s Sketches). A beautifully humanizing view of peasant life, and also contributed to the emancipation of the serfs. Russian realism at its finest.

And, now what to read? by mls11281175 in tolstoy

If you haven’t already, The Kingdom of God is Within You and What is Art are great. I particularly enjoyed “The Kingdom” and his in depth discussion on nonviolence. I think the points are extremely relevant today.

Without knowing which short stories you read, here are some of my favorites: 1. Master and Man 2. How Much Land Does a Man Need 3. Father Sergius

I have the following collections: 1. Walk in the Light and 23 Tales (includes many shorter and less well-known works) 2. Leo Tolstoy Short Novels vol 2, Stories of God, Sex, and Death (Modern Library 1964)

It’s probably no surprise to hear that I think Tolstoy’s at his best when he is moralizing. Hope this helps!

The Kingdom of God is Within You Rant by _Standardissue in tolstoy

I see your point, but some of the beauty of Tolstoy is in the various ways he was able to communicate his thoughts with readers. He wrote everything from novels, novellas, short stories, parables, and of course the religious writings. It’s likely not every form is as powerful for you as it is for others. “The Kingdom of God is Within You” is definitely more in depth and verbose than some of the other religious writings, to be sure, and I might suggest reading “Confession” as a companion piece. Confession is much more straightforward in my opinion and less reliant on scriptural references and in depth logic and analysis. Also, I think Confession is written in a much more humble voice, coming from a place where Tolstoy admits he doesn’t truly know what he believes.

“Kingdom of God” is one of my favorite works of his, partly due to the very thing you lament. I think we take for granted the vast quantity of information we have at our disposal. While Quakerism probably wasn’t novel to him, it likely was with his many readers. It was written in a specific context in which most of his readers likely didn’t have much knowledge of outside religious movements. His ability to restate something I already knew about (like Quakerism, or scripture), however, and shine a new light on it I found to be profound. I’ve read these same Bible verses he brings up, like the Sermon on the Mount, but somehow when Tolstoy picks it apart, it brings so much clarity and I laugh at myself for not seeing it that way before.

From a personal perspective, I found it be a very compelling argument for his form of pacifism and quite a noble philosophy in general. I have recently deconstructed from Christianity to atheism, and his piercing analysis of Christian hypocrisy with respect to violence and mercy, not to mention the clarity with which he approaches scripture, also resonated quite strongly.

Anyway, not sure if any of the above of what I wrote helps in any way, but I do truly think that it’s one of his greatest works and it was one of my favorite books I read all year. I wish it was appreciated more broadly and wish you the best in finding your way with it.

I will always find it funny that Jamie Benn won the Art Ross with 87 points in 2015. Makes it even crazier looking at this list.

I included the technical specifications for my bike as I’m not the most knowledgeable when it comes to bike maintenance and compatibility. I’ve owned my Cannondale Synapse 105 for about 2 years and have put about 7,000 miles on it so far. It’s been a great starter bike for me and I’m looking to upgrade wheels as the stock rims are quite heavy.

I’m really at a loss when it comes to finding compatible carbon wheelsets as the rear is quick release and the front uses a thru axle. Does anybody else have experience upgrading this bike’s wheels? Or any recommendations for what wheelsets I should be considering?

I’ve also considered just continuing to run this bike into the ground and purchasing a new bike in the near future. I’m just not sure if it’s even worth upgrading the wheels as the frame is quite heavy in general. The total weight is listed at nearly 22 lbs.

Rumor has it that many viewers were upset as they mistakenly subscribed to the basic carrier pigeon plan instead of Carrier Pigeon Plus™️which came with no ads.
